Did you know? In the province of Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, right within its historic quarter, there is a church rich in stories of religious beliefs and national culture. So for today’s stroll, I’ll be showing you my visit to the Cathedral of San Eugenio de la Palma.
I hope you enjoy its architecture and appreciate each of these religious designs and photographs. Join me on this wonderful tour!

¿Sabías qué? En la provincia de Ciego de Ávila, Cuba dentro del mismo casco histórico, existe una iglesia rica en historias en cuanto a creencias religiosas y cultura nacional, pues en el paseo de hoy les estaré mostrando mi visita por la Cathedral de San Eugenio de la Palma.
Espero les guste su arquitectura y disfruten cada uno de esto diseños religiosos y fotografías. ¡Acompáñame en este maravilloso recorrido!
Today, December 24th, I decided to visit the Cathedral of San Eugenio de la Palma, or simply the Church of Ciego de Ávila. Even though it's a holiday, the town's atmosphere was quite calm and peaceful.
The building is located in the heart of Avileño, on Avenida Independencia, right across from José Martí Park, the city center.
Hoy 24 de diciembre, decidí visitar la Cathedral de San Eugenio de la Palma o simplemente Iglesia de Ciego de Ávila. A pesar de que la fecha es festiva estaba bastante tranquilo el ambiente del pueblo.
La instalación se encuentra ubicada en el corazón avileño, en avenida Independencia justo al frente del Parque José Martí, centro de ciudad.
This building features a simple colonial architecture with Art Deco influences. Its facade is painted in shades of yellow and white, crowned by a cross and a circular rose window, which conveys a blend of warmth and profound spirituality.
Above its main door is the statue of the city's Patron Saint, San Eugenio de la Palma—a structure preserved over the years, welcoming both the faithful and visitors.
Esta edificación cuenta con una arquitectura sencilla colonial, de influencias Art Decó, su fachada es de tonos amarillos y blanco, coronada por una cruz y un rosetón circular, que transmite una mezcla de amabilidad y profunda espiritualidad.
Encima de su puerta principal, está la estatua del Patrono de la ciudad San Eugenio de la Palma, estructura que se conserva con el pasar de los años, dando la bienvenida a fieles y visitantes.
Upon crossing its threshold, the atmosphere changes immediately. The interior is bright, spacious, and orderly, with long rows of wooden pews that guide the eye toward the main altar.
Due to its unique architectural design and the preservation of its heritage values, the building was nominated for the 2016 National Award for the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments, receiving a special mention in the Conservation category.
Al cruzar sus puertas, el ambiente cambia inmediatamente. El interior es luminoso, amplio y ordenado, con largas filas de bancos de madera que conducen la mirada hacia el altar mayor.
Su singularidad del diseño arquitectónico y la preservación de sus valores, el inmueble fue nominado al Premio Nacional de Conservación y Restauración de Monumentos 2016, alzándose con una mención especial en la categoría de Conservación.
To the right of the church entrance, you can see a confessional made of fine wood, typical of these traditional Catholic temples. (This is where the faithful would confess their sins.)
Additionally, the following images show religious paintings, decorations, and white walls that reinforce a sense of peace, inviting silence and prayer. There is also a small grated space for priests to vest before spiritual ceremonies.
A la derecha de la entrada en la iglesia, se observa un confesionario de madera preciosa, típico de estos templos católicos tradicionales. (Donde los fíeles confesaban sus pecados)
Además la siguientes imágenes muestran cuadros religiosos, adornos, paredes blancas que refuerzan sensación de paz, invitando al silencio y a la oración. Con pequeño espacio enrejado para que los sacerdotes se vistan ante las ceremonias espirituales.
Next, the most famous and patron saint of the Cuban people: Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre. The sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, venerated for having protected three fishermen during a storm in Eastern Cuba.
It’s a beautiful replica, but her main sanctuary is in El Cobre, Santiago de Cuba. In front of her, yellow flowers, lit candles, and offerings express the hopes and prayers of the people.
A continuación, la más famosa y patrona de los cubanos: Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre, donde en la escultura se representa a la Virgen Maria con el niño Jesús, venerada por haber protegido a tres pescadores durante una tormenta en el Oriente de Cuba.
Es una réplica bien linda, pero su santuario principal está en Santiago de Cuba, en el Cobre. Frente a ella, flores amarillas, velas encendidas y ofrendas expresan la esperanza y las plegarias del pueblo.
Within the temple, several carefully arranged religious sculptures stand out, having been brought from Spain. They are quite curious and beautiful works, donated to the church by Catholic believers.
En el templo destacan varias esculturas religiosas cuidadosamente dispuestas, traídas desde España. Son trabajos bien curiosos, hermosos y donados a la iglesia por creyentes católicos.
Fortunately, there were no ceremonies taking place at the altar, which gave me the chance to capture a close-up view of all these Christmas decorations and architectural details.
The church is not only a place of worship, but also a cultural and spiritual gathering point for the Avileña community.
Por suerte el altar estaba sin ceremonias, lo que me dio la posibilidad de captar de cerca todos todos estos artículos y arquitecturas navideñas.
La iglesia no solo es un lugar de culto, sino también un punto de encuentro cultural y espiritual para la comunidad avileña.
In one of the side areas, a Nativity scene delicately recreates the Christmas story, incorporating natural elements that add warmth and a sense of closeness. This corner is especially moving for families and children.
En uno de los espacios laterales, un nacimiento recrea con delicadeza la escena de la Navidad, integrando elementos naturales que aportan calidez y cercanía. Este rincón es especialmente emotivo para las familias y los niños.
Within the premises, another image of the saint is displayed, crafted in Barcelona. At its feet lies a relic of San Eugenio de Toledo, presented to Monsignor Mario Mestril—now Bishop Emeritus—by the Archbishop of that region during a trip he made to Spain.
En el recinto se expresa otra imagen del santo hecha en Barcelona y a sus pies una reliquia de San Eugenio de Toledo, entregada a Monseñor Mario Mestril, hoy Obispo Emérito, por el arzobispo de esa región en un viaje que realizara a España.
Everything is very well-organized, a peaceful place for every Catholic practitioner. Between prayers and walking through, I learned more about this beautiful religious art and listened to the topics being discussed.
Its votive chapels or offerings were numerous, where the faithful leave candles, flowers, or personal objects as a sign of faith or gratitude.
Todo es bien organizando, lugar tranquilo, para todo el practicante católico, yo entre rezos y recorridos. Aprendí más sobre este hermoso arte religioso y escuché sobre los temas hablados.
Sus Capillas u ofrendas votivas eran varias donde los fieles dejan velas, flores u objetos personales como muestra de fe o gratitud.
The Catholic Church of Ciego de Ávila will always be a must-visit if you come to the province. Its history, art, architecture, and spirituality make it a peaceful place rich with cultural heritage from its era.
On the way out, there is a small table selling religious items, along with some pamphlets they give away so you can learn more about this type of culture and temple—one of the city’s most cherished symbols.
La iglesia católica de Ciego de Ávila, siempre va a ser un recorrido obligatorio, si vienes por la provincia. Su historia, arte, arquitectura y espiritualidad lo hacen un lugar tranquilo y de riqueza cultural de la época.
Ya al salir, contiene una mesita para la venta de objetos religiosos, además de algunos escritos que te regalan para aprender más sobre este tipo de cultura y templo, uno de sus símbolos más queridos de la ciudad.
