Good morning to all Hivers! In the last two days I have visited, for the third time, Matera: the city of the Sassi!
If you have never been to Matera I really recommend you visit it, it is an evocative and exciting town. The thing that I find most beautiful about Matera is that you don't have to find a guided tour, but you can walk around the whole town on your own because you are sure to be able to visit everything on your own. Plus there is that touch of adventure that never hurts during a trip.
A little bit of history!
Matera is an Italian city of about 60,000 inhabitants and the provincial capital of Basilicata (a region in the south of Italy).
Matera is known worldwide for its characteristic and historical 'Sassi', which make the city one of the oldest inhabited in the world. The 'Sassi' of Matera were recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, and it was the first site in Southern Italy to receive this prestigious award!
In 2019, Matera became European Capital of Culture for that year, and in fact the media and tourist flow increased dramatically. Matera has been on everyone's lips since 2019!
In 2021 Matera was even chosen as the venue for the G20.
Matera is known as the city of the Sassi, precisely because of the peculiarity and uniqueness of its historical centre. The Sassi di Matera, i.e. the districts that make up the old part of the city, stretch out in two small valleys separated from each other by the rocky spur of the Civita.
The Sasso Barisano, the fulcrum of the old town, is the richest in sculpted portals and friezes that conceal its underground heart. The Sasso Caveoso vaguely takes the form of a theatre cavea. At the centre of it is the Civita, a rocky spur separating the two Sassi, on top of which are the Cathedral and the noble palaces. The three cores together form the ancient urban core of Matera, which has been declared a cultural landscape by UNESCO.
The Sassi of Matera are an urban settlement resulting from the various forms of civilisation and anthropisation that have occurred over time.

The summary of the trip to Matera must be this! Be kind to the Sassi!
I left from Naples with Fixbus, it took me a good 3 hours to reach Matera. Unfortunately, southern Italy lacks well-organised connections, especially the railways. A real shame for these lands!
I arrived in the evening and did a very first tour of the town centre, not going very far into the Sassi as the plan was to visit them the next day.
As I said before, I preferred not to follow a tourist itinerary, but to rely completely on chance and adventure. I found myself in beautiful streets and lanes that I would hardly have seen had I relied on a precise itinerary. I went on an adventure and it was even more beautiful and rewarding to see all these wonders.
I returned to Naples last night, I spent two days in total. I recommend, especially if you have never been there, to stay a few more days. Maybe three or four days would be ideal to visit everything and do all the activities that are planned. For sleeping, there is no problem whatsoever: B&Bs and hotels abound, there are so many of them and the prices are quite affordable. The food, of course, is typical Lucanian. Also quite poor, but really delicious.
I advise everyone when you travel to eat ONLY typical local food, I have seen far too many tourists eating Pizza and Mozzarella, which is a typical Italian food but certainly not typical of Basilicata, but rather of Campania. A pizza in any city in Italy will never be like a pizza in Naples!
Ah, of course, CAPPUCCINO IS NOT DRUNK DURING MEALS BUT ONLY AT BREAKFAST! YOU DON'T DRINK IT WITH PIZZA NOR WITH PASTA! I would really like to understand how you do it ahaha

Buongiorno a tutti Hivers! In questi ultimi due giorni ho visitato, per la terza volta, Matera: la città dei Sassi!
Se non siete mai stati a Matera vi consiglio davvero di visitarla, è una città suggestiva ed emozionante. La cosa che trovo più bella in assoluto di Matera è che non bisogna perforza trovare un percorso guidato, ma è possibile girare per tutta la città a piedi ed autonomamente perchè con certezza riuscirete da soli a visitare tutto. In più c'è quel pizzico di avventura che non guasta mai durante un viaggio.
Un pò di storia!
Matera è una città Italiana di circa 60.000 abitanti, capoluogo di provincia della Basilicata ( regione nel Sud dell'Italia).
Matera è conosciuta al mondo per i suoi caratteristici e storici "Sassi", che fanno della città una delle più antiche abitate al mondo. I "Sassi" di Matera sono stati riconosciuti come Patrimonio dell'Unesco nel 1993, ed è stato il primo sito in Sud Italia a ricevere questo prestigioso riconoscimento!
Nel 2019 Matera è diventata Capitale della Cultura Europea per quell'anno, ed infatti il flusso mediatico e il flusso turistico sono cresciuti a dismisura. Matera è stata, a partire dal 2019, sulla bocca di tutti!
Nel 2021 Matera è stata scelta addirittura come sede del G20.
Matera è nota come città dei Sassi, proprio per la peculiarità e l'unicità del suo centro storico. I Sassi di Matera, cioè dei rioni che costituiscono la parte antica della città, si distendono in due vallette separate tra loro dallo sperone roccioso della Civita.
Il Sasso Barisano, il fulcro della città vecchia, è il più ricco di portali scolpiti e fregi che ne nascondono il cuore sotterraneo. Il Sasso Caveoso assume vagamente la forma di una cavea teatrale. Al centro di essi si trova la Civita, uno sperone roccioso che separa i due Sassi, sulla cui sommità si trovano la Cattedrale ed i palazzi nobiliari. I tre nuclei insieme formano l'antico nucleo urbano di Matera, dichiarato dall'UNESCO paesaggio culturale.
I Sassi di Matera sono un insediamento urbano derivante dalle varie forme di civilizzazione ed antropizzazione succedutesi nel tempo.
Il mio viaggio!
La sintesi del viaggio a Matera deve essere questo! Siate gentili con i Sassi!
Sono partito da Napoli con Fixbus, ci ho impiegato ben 3 ore per raggiungere Matera. Purtroppo il Sud Italia manca di collegamenti ben organizzati, soprattutto quelli ferroviari. Un vero peccato per queste terre!
Sono arrivato di sera ed ho fatto un primissimo giro nel centro della città, non inoltrandomi molto nei Sassi poichè il programma era visitarli il giorno successivo.
Come ho detto prima ho preferito non seguire un itinerario turistico, ma affidarmi completamente al caso e all'avventura. Mi sono ritrovato in strade e stradine bellissime che difficilmente avrei visto se mi fossi affidato ad un itinerario preciso. Sono andato all'avventura ed è stato ancora più bello e gratificante vedere tutte queste meraviglie.
Sono ritornato a Napoli ieri sera, sono stato in totale 2 giorni. Io consiglio, soprattutto se non ci siete mai stati, di fermarvi qualche giorno in più. Magari 3 o 4 giorni sarebbero l'ideale per visitare tutto e svolgere tutte le attività che sono previste. Per dormire non c'è alcun tipo di problema: i B&B e gli Hotel fioccano, ce ne sono davvero tanti e i prezzi sono piuttosto accessibili. Il cibo, ovviamente, è quello tipico Lucano. Anche abbastanza povero, ma davvero buonissimo.
Consiglio a tutti quando viaggiate di mangiare SOLO cibo tipico del posto, ho visto fin troppi turistici mangiare Pizza e Mozzarella che sono si un cibo tipico Italiano ma sicuramente non tipico della Basilicata, bensì della Campania. Una pizza in qualsiasi città di Italia non sarà mai come una pizza a Napoli!
Ah, ovviamente, IL CAPPUCCINO NON SI BEVE DURANTE I PASTI MA SOLTANTO A COLAZIONE! NON SI BEVE CON LA PIZZA NE TANTOMENO CON LA PASTA! Vorrei davvero capire come fate ahaha

Uno dei luoghi più suggestivi e particolari che abbia mai visitato: classico posto per cui vale la frase "bisogna andarci almeno una volta nella vita!".
Saranno passati 10 anni da quando ci sono stato, ma ho riconosciuto un sacco di luoghi dalle tue foto... spero proprio di poterci tornare un giorno, anche se, come hai osservato, i collegamenti sono il vero problema: da Firenze ci misi praticamente un giorno interno per andare ed un altro per tornare... una odissea!
Il posto però valse ampiamente il viaggio :)

Lascia stare, io ora abito a Napoli e ci sono volute 3 ore di Flixbus in quanto i treni non esistono. Ma anche dal mio paese in basilicata comunque dista 1 oretta e mezza di macchina!
Bisogna sperare che prima o poi costruiscano linee ferroviarie decenti... così è veramente assurdo! Fossimo un paese immenso poi...

I love Italy! I keep coming a few times each year but I have never heard of Matera. Thanks a lot for introducing me this beautiful place. I will make sure to visit it 🙂
It also must be great to go hiking in the surrounding hills. Of course not in summer as it must be too hot 🙂

Matera is truly a pearl, I highly recommend you visit it if you come to Italy. You will be completely fascinated. Of course, you cannot miss cities like Rome, Naples or Florence!

Matera è stupenda, una delle tante perle presenti in Italia.
Ho apprezzato molto la parte dei consigli culinari ahahahah, non si possono vedere i turisti che mangiano cose random insieme solo perchè ne hanno sentito il nome (un pò è anche colpa di alcuni ristoratori che spacciano certi cibi per tipici quando non lo sono)...
