I think it always happens when many people of different fitness levels get together, that some don't quite reach the goal of the visit, and others take much longer to complete it.
It's great that your hiking partner turned out well and you were able to complete the challenge. It's a shame you didn't get to visit Alvera Lagoon when it's so close.
