The first sculpture that was erected to pay homage to José Julian Marti, Cuba's national hero, who represents the identity and values of freedom and independence of the nation, is located in Havana's Central Park.
One of Marti's defining virtues was his words. With a captivating voice, he was a man who hypnotised with his oratory. He was cultured, eloquent, and had a unique and beautiful style of expression, with grandiose phrases that captured the attention of all who heard him. Whether he was speaking to an educated audience or to a group of workers, or that one time he spoke to a group of mambises in the Cuban manigua just before his fall in combat. His speech was so powerful that no one could remain indifferent.
That's how I feel every time I pass this monument in the Central Park, and I stop in front of the monument and it's as if I were listening to one of his speeches. The sculpture of Marti is standing on a marble pedestal, he has a raised hand addressing an audience, his people, in one of his moving speeches.
The monument is located in the central area of this great park, which has also become a symbol of Cuban national pride.
The park has a privileged location, it is in one of the busiest areas of Havana. On one side is Prado Street with the Gran Teatro Alicia Alonso and the old Hotel Inglaterra. On the other side on Avenida Zulueta is the Museum of Contemporary Art and the modern Hotel Gran Manzana Kempinski. Nearby is also the imposing Capitolio Nacional, which can be admired from the park in all its splendour.
In addition to the majestic white marble statue of Marti, the park offers other charms. Strolling through its wide square or sitting on one of its benches, under the coolness and shade of the trees, is a pleasant and comforting experience.
Under the sun and in the hot Cuban climate the Central Park becomes an oasis, here among the trees you can feel a very pleasant breeze. Most of the site is planted with leafy trees that keep the place cool and shady, besides the many flowerbeds and wide gardens with different ornamental plants. Also for its royal palms, Cuba's National tree that flank Marti's monument as honourable guardians.
The Central Park is not a place to rush through. It is a place to stop, walk around calmly, and let yourself be enveloped by the beauty and spirit of the place.

La primera escultura que se alzó para homenajear a José Julián Marti, Héroe Nacional de Cuba, quien representa la identidad y los valores de libertad e independencia de la nación, se encuentra en el Parque Central de La Habana.
Una de las virtudes que definían a Martí era la palabra, con una voz cautivadora era un hombre que hipnotizaba con su oratoria. Era culto, elocuente, y tenía un estilo único y hermoso al expresarse, con frases grandiosas que captaban la atención de todo el que lo escuchaba. No importa si hablaba ante un auditorio culto o ante un grupo de obreros, o aquella única vez que habló a un grupo de mambises en la manigua cubana justo antes de su caída en combate. Su discurso era tan poderoso que nadie podía permanecer indiferente.
Así me siento cada vez que paso frente a este monumento en el Parque Central, y me detengo frente al monumento y es como si escuchara uno de sus discursos. La escultura de Marti está de pie sobre un pedestal de mármol, tiene una mano alzada dirigiéndose hacia un público, hacia su pueblo, en uno de sus emotivos discursos.
El monumento está ubicado en la zona central de este gran Parque el que también se ha convertido en símbolo de cubanía y orgullo nacional.
El parque tiene una ubicación privilegiada, está en una de las zonas más transitadas de La Habana. A un lado está la calle Prado con el Gran Teatro Alicia Alonso y el antiguo Hotel Inglaterra. Al otro en la Avenida Zulueta se encuentran el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo y el moderno Hotel Gran Manzana Kempinski. Muy cerca también se encuentra el imponente Capitolio Nacional que se puede admirar desde el parque con todo su esplendor.
Además de la majestuosa estatua de Martí en mármol blanco, el parque ofrece otros encantos. Pasear por su amplia plazoleta o sentarse en uno de sus bancos, bajo la frescura y la sombra de los árboles, es una experiencia grata y reconfortante.
Bajo el sol y en el caluroso clima cubano el Parque Central se convierte en un oasis, aquí entre los árboles se siente una brisa muy agradable la mayor parte del sitio está sembrado con frondosos árboles que mantienen el sitio fresco y a la sombra, además de los muchos canteros y amplios jardines con diferentes plantas ornamentales. También por sus palmas reales, árbol Nacional de Cuba que flanquean el monumento de Martí como guardianes honorables.
El Parque Central no es un lugar para atravesar con prisa. Es un espacio para detenerse, recorrerlo con calma, y dejarse envolver por la belleza y el espíritu del lugar.
