Historic Center of Havana: Amargura Street [EN/ES]

I recently visited the Diversity Room gallery located in Old Havana, in the city of Havana, on the occasion of an exhibition that was held by several members of the Cuban Hive community. It was a very special visit, since it was not only the perfect place to meet with a group of friends, but I also had the opportunity to walk a stretch of Amargura Street, where this gallery is located. This street is part of the Historic Center of the capital of Cuba, which is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Amargura Street is one of the oldest streets in Havana and preserves a great part of our cultural heritage. This avenue has had many names, all coming from the procession of the Viacrucis, which originated in this street and was carried out since the XVII century, on Good Friday. A tradition that recreates the route that Jesus went through on his way to Calvary. As a vestige of those times, a wooden cross painted green remains on the corner of Amargura and Mercaderes streets. On this same site used to be the former residence of the Counts of Lagunillas, which now houses the Chocolate Museum, formerly known as the House of the Green Cross.

At the Chocolate Museum, together with the girls from hivecuba, we did not miss the opportunity and went inside to taste the tasty drink of the Mayan gods, a tasty chocolate! 🍫

The Amargura Street allows us to enjoy the past while walking along it. It is kept closed to vehicular traffic, which allows us to walk along it quietly while admiring the design and architecture of past times. Here we find colonial style houses, we can see many two-story buildings, some with stone facades and balconies beautifully decorated with wood, all with large windows and large, wide wooden doors.

On this street lived renowned historical personalities of the time, such as Francisco de Arango y Parreño, an outstanding politician and illustrious economist. At present, his former home houses the last workplace of the renowned Havana historian Eusebio Leal Spengler, where he had his office.

Thanks to the kindness of the person taking care of the place, I was able to enter and take some pictures. It is a beautiful house with a very spacious interior patio. It has a room dedicated to tell the history of Amargura Street and a space where we can see a gallery with images of the life of the great historian and the main promoter of the restoration of the historic center of the city.

I walked along this street with @lileisabel and my little girl, taking pictures of the most beautiful places we found. We visited some stores and stores, like Casa del Abanico, where they sell handmade wooden fans, beautiful works of art. The headquarters of the company Dance-Theater Retazos and the Boloña Editions bookstore are also located here.

On the corner of San Ignacio we find a magnificent building, the current Hotel Raquel, a four-star hotel located in the place where the Loriente y Hermanos Mercantile Society used to be, a company dedicated to commerce that later became the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce of the Republic of Cuba. In the early 90's of the last century, the Havana historian's office began a major restoration work to turn it into the current Hotel Raquel.

This building was the one that impressed me the most of all the ones on this street with its grand architecture and beauty. Its interior is adorned with stained glass windows and marble columns, creating a very elegant and beautiful atmosphere.

Amargura Street is a place that deserves more than one visit, like all the other places in Havana, full of Cuban history, places where we always want to return.

Recientemente estuve en la galería de la Sala de la Diversidad que se encuentra en La Habana Vieja, en la ciudad de la Habana, con motivo de una exposición que se realizó por varios miembros de la comunidad cubana de Hive. Fue una visita muy especial, ya que no solo fue el lugar perfecto para reunirnos con un grupo de amigos, sino que también tuve la oportunidad de recorrer un tramo de la Calle Amargura, lugar donde se encuentra ubicada esta galería. Esta calle forma parte del Centro Histórico de la capital de Cuba, el que está declarado como Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO.

La calle Amargura es una de las más antiguas de la Habana y conserva gran parte de nuestro patrimonio cultural. Esta avenida ha tenido muchos nombres, todos provenientes de la procesión del Viacrucis, que se originaba en esta calle y que se llevaba a cabo desde el siglo XVII, el día de Viernes Santo. Una tradición que recrea la ruta que atravesó Jesús en su camino al Calvario. Cómo vestigio de esos tiempos queda en la esquina de las calles Amargura y Mercaderes una cruz de madera pintada de verde. En este mismo sitio solía estar la antigua residencia de los condes de Lagunillas, que ahora alberga el Museo del Chocolate, antes conocida como la Casa de la Cruz Verde.

En el Museo del Chocolate, junto a las chicas de hivecuba, no perdimos la oportunidad y entramos a saborear la sabrosa bebida de los dioses mayas, ¡un sabroso chocolate! 🍫

La Calle Amargura nos permite disfrutar del pasado mientras caminamos por ella. Se mantiene cerrada al tráfico de vehículos, lo que nos permite transitar por ella tranquilamente mientras admiramos el diseño y la arquitectura de épocas pasadas. Aquí encontramos casas de estilo colonial, podemos ver muchas edificaciones de dos pisos, algunas con sus fachadas de piedra y sus balcones bellamente decorados con madera, todas con amplias ventanas y grandes y anchas puertas de madera.

En esta calle vivieron personalidades históricas de renombre en su época, como Francisco de Arango y Parreño, un destacado político y economista ilustre. En estos momentos la que fuera su vivienda alberga el último lugar de trabajo del reconocido historiador de la Habana Eusebio Leal Spengler, dónde tuvo su oficina.

Gracias a la amabilidad de la persona que cuidaba el lugar, pude entrar y tomar algunas fotos. Está es una casa hermosa con un patio interior muy amplio. Tiene un local dedicado a contar la historia de la calle Amargura y un espacio dónde podemos ver una galería con imágenes de la vida del gran historiador y el principal impulsor de la restauración del centro histórico de la ciudad.

Recorrí esta calle junto a @lileisabel y mi niña, tomando fotos de los lugares más hermosos que encontramos. Visitamos algunas tiendas y comercios, como la Casa del Abanico, dónde venden abanicos de madera elaborados a mano, bellas obras de arte. También están la sede de la compañía Danza-Teatro Retazos y la librería Ediciones Boloña.

En la esquina de San Ignacio nos encontramos con una magnífica edificación, el actual Hotel Raquel, un hotel de cuatro estrellas que se encuentra en el lugar donde solía estar la Sociedad Mercantil Loriente y Hermanos, una empresa dedicada al comercio que posteriormente, fue sede de la Cámara de Comercio de la República de Cuba. A principios de los años 90 del pasado siglo se inició una gran labor de restauración por parte de la oficina del historiador de La Habana para convertirlo en el actual Hotel Raquel.

Esta edificación fue la que más me impresionó de todas las que hay en esta calle con su grandiosa arquitectura y belleza. Su interior está adornado con vitrales de colores y columnas de mármol, creando un ambiente muy elegante y hermoso.

La Calle Amargura es un lugar que merece más de una visita, como todos los demás sitios en La Habana, llenos de la historia cubana, lugares a donde queremos regresar siempre.
