Old Alaska Highway

Hello Hivers

Kiskatinaw Bridge

A construction and engineering feat.
Built in 1942-43 as part of the Alaska Highway, it remained in use till
1978 when a new bridge was constructed with a much higher load capacity.
Made entirely of wood, shipped from the coast of B.C. over 500,000 board feet.....

for this 534' or 162.763 meters long bridge.
The concrete footings were poured during a cold snap and all had to be enclosed and heated till the concrete cured.
An additional challenge in it's construction is the curve, as it was the first curved bridge built in Canada.
Located about 17.3 km North of Dawson Creek, B.C. Canada the signs are well marked and it is just a short drive off the new Alaska Highway.
There are excellent camping spots near the bridge and a terrific stop for just seeing an....

An amazing bridge!
How much effort was put into its construction,
I think that this bridge is still very strong and it is possible for cars with a small mass to drive on it.

I was fascinated by the bridge… cars could travel on it till a few years ago, there was a landslide, and they want to be careful with vehicles on it…. There is a new bridge a couple miles away so it’s doubtful they will spend any money on it and devote the foundation…

I understood you.
