San Blas, verily, is one of the most picturesque quarters of Valencia, not only for its history, but also for the hues that adorn its dwellings.
I didst journey, in company with a band of photographers from the city, a fellowship of many who seek 'things worthy of capture' with their lenses.
And 'twas fitting, for Valencia didst mark another year since its founding. In the year of our Lord 1555, the first structures of the city were raised, when 'twas yet a colony of Spain.
I find this number curious. What shall Valencia be when it reaches 5,555 years?
But let us return to the present, or rather, the recent past, for these images were taken but a few days hence.
The group, 'Urban Photographers of Valencia', wished to pay homage with their craft: to immortalize the people and the architecture.
Our journey began at the oldest bridge, named Morillo's Bridge. This bridge didst once connect the city to the rest of the land.
Thereafter, we trod upon what was once called 'Royal Street', which led directly from the east towards the bridge.
And along this stretch, many houses stand, built over time around the 19th century, for Valencia, in its beginnings, was but what is now known as the Historic Centre. Regions such as San Blas were settled much later and gradually became part of the city.
I was struck that many who joined us had never set foot in San Blas, and were marvelled by the vibrant colours of its houses, which indeed lend an attractive air.
Some residents, curious at the throng of photographers, came forth to greet us, and indeed, to pose for our lenses.
We visited Glorieta Square, a welcoming place. A small space, with seats and adornments that seemed from a fairy tale.
Then, we encountered some who recounted the tale of San Blas' founding. One, a chronicler, spoke of the times of independence, which date from the early 19th century.
Indeed, we stood then in Páez Square, named for one of the most important heroes, José Antonio Páez.
The chronicler also told of La Adobera, a popular quarter of Valencia, within San Blas. 'Twas said that there was a type of earth there, ideal for making blocks, called adobe. 'Twas to many a sort of 'factory', and people settled there in houses of this material.
The hour of twilight arrived, and the light was perfect. Many captured moments of children at play, and of the architecture.
At this hour, folk emerge from their homes to enjoy the air and simply observe. 'Tis a sort of pastime, especially among the elders.
The hues of the sunset harmonized with the colours of the houses, creating interesting contrasts.
Valencia, like any city of the world, hath picturesque places that, at first glance, seem not for tourists, but truly are, and San Blas is a testament.

San Blas es una de las zonas más pintorescas de Valencia, no solo por su historia, sino también por los vibrantes colores de sus casas.
Recientemente, me uní a un grupo fotográfico de la ciudad, compuesto por numerosos fotógrafos y entusiastas, en busca de motivos para capturar con nuestras cámaras.
Y la ocasión lo ameritaba, ya que Valencia celebraba un año más de su fundación. En 1555, se erigieron las primeras estructuras de la ciudad, entonces una colonia española.
Me pregunto, ¿cómo será Valencia cuando cumpla 5.555 años?
Pero volvamos al presente, o mejor dicho, al pasado reciente, pues estas fotos las tomé hace pocos días.
El grupo Fotógrafos Urbanos de Valencia quiso rendir homenaje a la ciudad con lo que mejor sabe hacer: inmortalizar a su gente y su arquitectura.
Nuestro recorrido comenzó en el Puente Morillo, el más antiguo de la ciudad, que antiguamente conectaba Valencia con el resto del país.
Luego, caminamos por la antigua "Calle Real", que precisamente conducía desde el este hacia el puente.
A lo largo de este trayecto, encontramos numerosas casas construidas alrededor del siglo XIX. Valencia, en sus inicios, se limitaba a lo que hoy conocemos como el Centro Histórico. Zonas aledañas como San Blas fueron pobladas mucho después de la fundación y, gradualmente, se integraron a la ciudad.
Me sorprendió que muchos de los asistentes nunca habían visitado San Blas y quedaron maravillados con los llamativos colores de sus casas, que le confieren un aspecto tan atractivo.
Algunos habitantes de la zona, curiosos por la presencia de tantos fotógrafos, salieron a saludarnos y, por supuesto, a posar para nuestras cámaras.
Visitamos la Plaza La Glorieta, un lugar acogedor con asientos y adornos que parecen sacados de un cuento de hadas.
Después, nos encontramos con algunos lugareños que compartieron con nosotros la historia de la fundación de San Blas. Uno de ellos, un cronista, nos habló también de la época de la independencia, a principios del siglo XIX.
De hecho, nos encontrábamos en ese momento en la Plaza Páez, llamada así en honor a uno de los próceres más importantes, José Antonio Páez.
El cronista también nos contó la historia de La Adobera, un popular barrio de San Blas. Resulta que allí había un tipo de tierra ideal para la fabricación de bloques de construcción, llamados adobes. Para muchos, era una especie de "fábrica", y poco a poco la gente fue estableciéndose en casas hechas de este material.
Al atardecer, la luz era perfecta. Muchos capturamos momentos como niños jugando y la arquitectura del lugar.
A esa hora, la gente suele salir de sus casas a disfrutar del clima y observar el entorno. Parece una especie de pasatiempo, especialmente entre los ancianos.
Los colores del ocaso armonizaron con los de las casas, creando contrastes interesantes.
Valencia, como toda ciudad del mundo, tiene lugares pintorescos que, a simple vista, no parecen turísticos, pero que en realidad lo son, y San Blas es un claro ejemplo.
