For most students who finish their high school studies in Argentina, it is a tradition to take the graduation trip to the city of Bariloche. Once settled in this part of the province of Río Negro, there are a series of excursions that are carried out year after year so that teenagers can get to know our Patagonia. One of them is the visit to the Arrayanes Forest, which is accessed by boat through Lake Nahuel Huapi, already crossing to the neighboring province of Neuquén. For some reason, my graduation trip did not include a trip to this place, but 12 years later, I was able to get there on my own 😃.
Para la mayoría de los estudiantes que terminan sus estudios de escuela secundaria en Argentina, es una tradición realizar el viaje de egresados hacia la ciudad de Bariloche. Una vez instalados en esta parte de la provincia de Río Negro, hay una serie de excursiones que se realizan año a año para que los adolescentes conozcan nuestra patagonia. Una de ellas es la visita al Bosque de Arrayanes, al que se accede en embarcación a través del Lago Nahuel Huapi, ya cruzando a la provincia vecina Neuquén. Por alguna razón, mi viaje egresado no incluyó el paseo a este lugar, pero 12 años después, pude llegar por mis propios medios 😃.
Even my mother was surprised when she found out that my graduate trip did not include the trip to the myrtle forest, because hers, which was more than 30 years ago, did have it. I also talked with other friends and they did visit it: apparently everyone knew this forest except me. That's why on my last trip in the fall I included it as part of my travel itinerary 😅.
Incluso mi mamá se sorprendió cuando supo que mi viaje de egresados no incluía el paseo al bosque de arrayanes, porque el de ella que fue hace más de 30 años si lo tuvo. También conversé con otros amigos y ellos sí lo visitaron: aparentemente todos conocían este bosque menos yo. Es por eso que en mi último viaje en el otoño lo incluí como parte de mi itinerario de viaje 😅.
At first, my idea was to get there walking through the forest on a 12 km trail. I like trekking, but when we arrived at the gate of the National Park we saw that boat trips to the place were accessible, so we took one and in 45 minutes we arrived at Puerto de Arrayanes. This place was right at the gate of the park, and to enter we had to pay a fee of 1200 ARS at that time (3 USD). In Argentina, every time you want to enter a national park you have to pay an entrance fee that contributes to the preservation of the space 😃.
Al principio, mi idea era llegar hasta allá caminando por el bosque en un sendero de 12 km. Me gusta el trekking, pero cuando llegamos a la puerta del Parque Nacional vimos que los paseos en barco hasta el lugar estaban accesibles, así que nos tomamos uno y en 45 minutos llegamos al Puerto de Arrayanes. Este lugar era justo la puerta del parque, y para poder ingresar tuvimos que abonar una tarifa de 1200 ARS en ese momento (3 USD). En Argentina, cada vez que quieras entrar a un parque nacional tenes que pagar una entrada con la que se contribuye a la preservación del espacio 😃.
While we were on the boat ride to the place, the guide told us the history of this park. This place is located on a peninsula that includes the largest myrtle tree forest in the region and for many years was part of private property. Imagine how lucky the owners were to have an exotic forest in their backyard 😅.
Mientras ibamos en el paseo en barco hasta el lugar, el guía nos contó la historia de este parque. Este lugar se encuentra en una península que incluye el bosque de árboles arrayanes más grande de la región y durante muchos años formó parte de una propiedad privada. Imaginense lo afortunados que eran los dueños de tener un bosque exótico en el patio de su casa 😅.
Of course this did not last long until the provincial government expropriated this place and turned it into a national park so that anyone who wishes can visit it. Well, anyone who is willing to walk 12 km to get there or pay 6,000 ARS (12 USD) for navigation. Well, at least it no longer belongs to one owner and belongs to all of us 😃.
Por supuesto esto no duró mucho hasta que el gobierno de la provincia expropió este lugar y lo convirtió en un parque nacional para que todo el que lo desee pueda visitarlo. Bueno, todo el que esté dispuesto a caminar 12 km hasta llegar a él o a pagar 6000 ARS (12 USD) por la navegación. Bueno, al menos ya no es de un único dueño y nos pertenece a todos 😃.
This forest is quite picturesque and the walk is all through wooden walkways and stairs. As it is a preserved area, visitors are not allowed to walk on the direct ground. The entire forest was quite high and there was a lot of shade, but some rays of the sun still managed to illuminate the environment. Something that surprised me is that even though it was quite warm before entering the forest, there the drop in temperature was quite large, so much so that I had to cover up again 😅.
Este bosque es bastante pintoresco y su paseo es todo a través de pasarelas y escalinatas de madera. Como es un área preservada, no se permite que los visitantes caminen sobre el suelo directo. Todo el bosque era bastante alto y había mucha sombra, pero igual algunos rayos del sol lograban iluminar el ambiente. Algo que me sorprendió es que a pesar de que estaba bastante cálido antes de ingresar al bosque, ahí el descenso de temperatura fue bastante amplio, tanto que me tuve que abrigar de nuevo 😅.
These myrtle trees are particular for their easily recognizable orange trunk. Also, its trunk was quite cold, something that was reported on the signs and that we were able to verify on our own. This cold, almost frozen trunk is because these trees have a very thin bark and you can feel the temperature of the fluids that run inside 😃.
Estos árboles arrayanes son particulares por su tronco color anaranjado y fácilmente reconocible. También, su tronco era bastante frío, algo que estaba informado en los carteles y que pudimos comprobar por nuestra cuenta. Este tronco frío casi helado es porque estos árboles tienen una corteza muy fina y se puede sentir la temperatura de los fluidos que corren en su interior 😃.
Another curious thing about this forest is its origin: since myrtles can grow from the fallen branches of other trees, they are always constantly growing. The signs said that most of these trees have grown this way and that surely very few specimens have grown from a seed. I thought this was wonderful, nature is always surprising 💖.
Otra cosa curiosa de este bosque es su origen: como los arrayanes pueden crecer a partir de las ramas caídas de otros árboles, siempre estan en constante crecimiento. Los carteles decían que la mayoría de esto árboles ha crecido de esta forma y que seguramente muy pocos ejemplares hayan crecido a partir de una semilla. Esto me pareció maravilloso, la naturaleza siempre es sorprendente 💖.
What we could also see on this walk was an area where the tips of the trees had turned light in color. The posters indicated that although it is suspected that this effect may be due to climate change, the exact causes have not yet been determined. Several specimens had this problem, so lately the forest has been further preserved so that reproduction in this forest can continue 😶.
Lo que también pudimos ver en este paseo fue una zona en donde las puntas de los árboles se habían vuelto de color claro. Los carteles indicaban que si bien se sospecha que este efecto puede deberse al cambio climático, todavía no estan determinadas las causas exactas. Varios ejemplares tenían este problema, por lo que últimamente se ha preservado aún más el bosque para que la reproducción en este bosque pueda continuar 😶.
In total, the walk through this park has about 800 meters of walkways that run through the forest in half hour. I liked that they respected the color of the forest for their construction because they make everything look nice together. I don't know if my teenage self would have enjoyed this ride because at that age I was interested in other things, but my adult self was definitely delighted with this ride ❤️.
En total, el paseo por este parque cuenta con unos 800 metros de pasarelas que recorren el bosque en media hora. Me gustó que para la construcción de ellas hayan respetado el color del bosque porque hacen que todo se vea lindo en conjunto. No sé si mi yo adolescente hubiese disfrutado este paseo porque en esa edad me interesaban otras cosas, pero definitivamente mi yo adulto estuvo encantado con este paseo ❤️.
As for services, this place has a small grocery store called "Tea House", where you can buy some things to eat (you can imagine that at very high prices since it is the only option being 12 km from the center of Villa The Angostura). There are also bathrooms and spaces with tables and chairs to rest a little, or else you can go to the dock to look at the lake. It's a pretty nice walk to see the curiosities of this forest and I'm glad I didn't miss it this time ❣️.
En cuanto a servicios, este lugar cuenta con una pequeña proveeduría llamada "Casa del té", en donde se pueden comprar algunas cosas para comer (se imaginarán que a precios muy elevados ya que es la única opción estando a 12 km del centro de Villa La Angostura). También hay baños y espacios con mesas y sillas para poder descansar un poco, o sino se puede ir al muelle a contemplar el lago. Es un paseo bastante lindo para conocer las curiosidades de este bosque y me alegro de no habermelo perdido esta vez ❣️.
Every time I'm traveling I like to go explore new places so I can say "I was there" and of course, continue learning about the beautiful things in my country. Since this walk began, everything was quite nice, with the navigation included and the walk among the orange trees. I also liked that there is the possibility that visitors can go there to take a souvenir of a nice walk. Now, after 12 years, I can say that I visited the traditional myrtle forest in Argentine Patagonia ❤️.
Cada vez que estoy de viaje me gusta ir a explorar nuevos lugares para poder decir "yo estuve ahí" y por supuesto, seguir aprendiendo sobre las cosas hermosas que hay en mi país. Desde que empezó este paseo, todo fue bastante lindo, con la navegación incluída y el paseo entre los árboles anaranjados. También me gustó que exista la posibilidad de que los visitantes puedan llegar hasta ahí a llevarse un recuerdo de un lindo paseo. Ahora sí, después de 12 años, puedo decir que visité el tradicional bosque de arrayanes en la patagonia argentina ❤️.

What a pity that you did not include a visit to this beautiful place in your graduate trip, but as I always say, life gives you revenge and you have been able to visit and get to know this beautiful thing that the south of the country has.

Todo este paseo me encantó. Si hubieses ido en tu adolescencia creo que sí lo habrías disfrutado igual o quizá más. Uno se emociona tanto con las cosas bellas a cualquier edad.

Son árboles frondosos, muy lindos, sus hojas tienen un color entre anaranjado y amarillo. Es el árbol nacional de Venezuela. Se pueden ver mayormente cuando andamos por la carretera en época de mayo y junio.

12km trail in the forest, thousands of stairs, it sounds tiring, but exploring that beautiful nature is for sure a pleasant experience.
We definitely got tired but it was worth knowing this beautiful place ❤️❤️❤️

Hello Martina. I don't know how many of my classmates would have gone to the myrtle forest on another occasion, there are so many beautiful things to see and without so much travel that I don't know if this forest will be an option for you to visit on vacation. Anyway, I was glad I put it on my itinerary, it was great to learn about its history.
And about the Hive Fest, I don't know where it is but I don't think I can attend. It is very expensive for me to leave Argentina 😅.
