Argentina - Rented car with friends, 100 km to Tolhuin and the improvised and cloudy summit of Jeujepén Hill. 😃❤️

Despite the more than 20,000 square kilometres of the territory of Tierra del Fuego in southern Argentina, this place is made up of only four settlements. Fueguinos, as the inhabitants of this island are called, are mainly distributed in the big cities of Ushuaia and Rio Grande, with slightly fewer people scattered in Puerto Almanza. The fourth place to visit in this area is Tolhuin, a city that has been growing lately, but is still not as well known as the first three. As part of my stay in this province, I just needed to go for a walk around this place, and I found the perfect occasion one day when we rented a car without a well-defined plan, but it ended up being incredible ❤️.

Since we discovered that renting a car for four or five people was very cheap, my friend Naty and I rented one almost every weekend. We paid no more than $60 a day to use it, and we could go anywhere we wanted. The fun of it was that as we were staying in Ushuaia, the most touristic city of all, we always had companions for this plan. There was never any plan so precise, just to drive around to wherever our designated driver wanted to take us.

In one of the last weeks of February we had met Fabri and Leo, guests of the hostel with whom we had shared some treks before. When Saturday came and we told them about our rental car plan, they had no problem in coming with us. By then we had already covered quite a bit of Ushuaia, so during a brainstorming session between the four of us, we decided that it would be a good idea to drive 100 km outside Ushuaia to Tolhuin, the neighbouring town.

When we finally arrived after more than an hour and a half, it was a big what now? The improvisation of this plan on the fly and the no-signal on the route had left us no time to plan anything, but this team quickly found something to do. First, we stopped by a supermarket to get supplies for lunch, and then we investigated some interesting things to do for the day.

I don't think any of the four of us had thought of this day as a day for trekking, but in the end it turned out that way. Tolhuin is nice, but there weren't that many things to do so going to visit a mountain ended up being a good option. Unlike Ushuaia, there aren't that many mountains in this town, but we still found one to see. It was Cerro Jeujepen, which offered a beautiful viewpoint with a great view of Lago Fagnano and the environmental disaster caused by all the beaver farms.

We could have driven to the viewpoint, but my friend Naty didn't dare to drive up such a steep road, so we left the car 2 km behind and decided to walk up. This took us only half an hour and it was still too early to end our day there. The view was beautiful, but we were looking forward to a bit more. Behind us at the viewpoint there was a ‘No trespassing due to danger of landslide’ sign, but guess what? We went through anyway.

Igualmente pasamos.

It is true that after this sign there was a slightly marked path on a slightly unstable terrain, but only a few metres later we came across a beautiful forest. In it, there were the typical signposts to follow an almost unmistakable path. The thing was that it was very steep and immediately took the wind out of us. But like all trails of this kind, a few metres out of the forest, we had even more incredible views of Lago Fagnano.

Passing the sign got a little out of hand because none of the four of us knew where we were going, but luckily for us, we still had a signal on our mobile phones. Almost confirming our suspicions, this road was taking us to the summit of Cerro Jeujepén, but we still had about 40 minutes of walking to do. We had to take a break on whether or not to continue because it was already after 3pm, but of course we were all eager to find out what was beyond.

We were following the path perfectly, until we were very close to the summit, when the whole landscape was covered by a big cloud. Literally, the whole view was covered by a big white sponge of humidity. We were all thrilled by this: we never thought that on this day made on the fly we would end up walking inside a cloud. As we got deeper and deeper into the cloud, the view got tricky, but the well trodden path allowed us to continue on to the top.

We walked slowly, almost blindly, for a few minutes, until in the distance we spotted something cube-shaped which, according to what we had read on the internet, was what marked the exact point of the summit. As we got closer, we discovered that it was a small container with a seat inside. Next to it, there were a few iron bars of what must once have been a cross. Surely this small space serves as a shelter from adverse weather conditions, but for us at least, the cloud that accompanied us was harmless.

This improvised summit on my first visit to Tolhuin became the perfect place to leave my Worldmappin sticker. Unlike other tourist spots, there were no other stickers in this container, so mine stood out quite a bit. After several days walking with Naty in the city, she already knew that I was hoping to find a place where I could leave my mark, and this was perfect for that. What do you think?

The climb up Cerro Jeujepén was somewhat demanding, but you will be surprised to know that this hill is only 700 masl. The whole island of Tierra del Fuego is very low and its mountains are not very high above the sea, but they still challenge you with their climbs. After all that physical effort, which ended up lasting almost two hours, it was time for a well deserved lunch with the provisions we bought down below, in which of course there was no lack of wine.

As with most trekking, the descent was somewhat easier than the ascent and when we were on our way back home, we made one last stop. From there we could admire the entire Jeujepén Hill, which we had not paid much attention to on the way up because we had no idea that we would be climbing it. We could also see that the cloud we walked in was still there, stuck on the summit. Unbelievable that a moment ago we had been up there ❤️.

After the trip to Tolhuin and the rest of the localities of Tierra del Fuego, I can say that my stay in this province was complete. I was glad I stayed so long in Ushuaia, because I had the opportunity to visit almost everything in the surroundings. The impromptu trekking to the summit of Cerro Jeujepén was a big plus, and the experience of being inside a cloud was unique for me. We did a lot of things that day, and all for only $15 in our private vehicle 😃.

What an incredible adventure! When you went ahead despite the warning sign, I thought you were reckless, but I got over my fright when I realised you were checking your mobile phone coverage. I don't know why I imagined Tierra del Fuego to be full of high mountains, what a surprise. Although, in fact, any steep climb is a challenge, and you don't need to look for an 8k for that, hehe. If the day had been clearer, the views of the lake from up there would have been wonderful, but even so, it was worth the effort. And you left your mark there on behalf of all Hive travellers, thank you!

Hi Paloma. It was great to visit this place, I hope the Worldmappin brand is still around! I was delighted to leave this souvenir. And here the mountains are not so high but no less challenging haha.

I wish you a great day, best regards ❤️.

Ushuaia is a beautiful city, and there are so many beautiful places to visit, but to do so, you need a car.

Great idea to rent a vehicle. The cost isn't that high, and you can see many places.

Although Tolhuin is one of the oldest places, it's true that it's not as well-known, but there are beautiful and very interesting places to visit.

What a beautiful view from the lookout point! You were able to take some beautiful postcards, dear friend @lauramica.

It's really very convenient to rent a car, especially when the expense is split between four people.

Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful photographs and this whole wonderful adventure.

Have a wonderful weekend.

A hug to the whole family.

Hi Luis. Yes, Ushuaia and surroundings are beautiful. I really enjoyed Jeujepén Hill.

Have a nice weekend, greetings for your family too 💕

Nothing beats touring with friends. The car rent idea is also great because the cost would be shared among the friends and you get to go wherever you want with it. Sounds like a lot of fun 😁

This blog really captures the magic of impromptu adventures! It’s so relatable.. the thrill of not having a set plan, just deciding to drive somewhere on a whim, and having the whole day unfold naturally.
Tolhuin sounds like such a hidden gem.. It’s one of those places that’s easy to overlook when you're in a bigger city like Ushuaia, but your story really shows how much beauty there is to discover when you take the time to wander..
All in all, this trip sounds like the perfect mix of spontaneity, friendship, and nature. Plus, the fact that you did it all for $15 in a rental car? That’s what I call a win!😁
