Cape Spartel Lighthouse Morocco

in Pinmapplelast year (edited)

About 12 km to the West of Tangiers Morocco is a beautiful lighthouse about 1000 feet above the water of the Atlantic Ocean at the entrance to the straights of Gibraltar. It has been in operation since 1864 and probably has saved many sailors lives as it is the opening of one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Before the lighthouse many ships ran aground here.

The drive to the lighthouse from Tangier does not take too long and takes you through a forest which is part of the reserve around the cape.

At the lighthouse there is a restaurant and a number of vantage points. There is not much else to do other than enjoy the views and the strong breeze of the sea here.

Spartel is Latin for the Spanish tail plants that grow around the area. I particularly enjoyed the palm trees with the deep blue shades of the sky and the ocean.

To the south of the lighthouse and down the cape not too far are a series of beaches and little bays. The cave of Hercules is also not far away.

The lighthouse construction is very representative of the style of the area, Arabic and North African. I am not sure if it is possible to go inside but the day were were there it was definitely not open to guests.

The grounds are nicely kept and are like a little oasis on the side of the steep coast line.

A view down the coast towards Tangiers shows just how rugged the surrounding terrain is.

It looks like there is another newer lighthouse or ocean traffic tower near by.

One last picture of the beautiful lighthouse.

I enjoyed this little step out of the city and the fresh air that this little trip provided. We probably only stayed about 40 minutes. After that we went on our way to the Cave of Hercules.

Thanks for taking a another short trip with me.

You guys sure had fun

Yes we did thank you.

You are welcome

Certainly the construction is very typical of the area and is in perfect condition, it is like a structure out of a movie, simply magical. Beautiful day and excellent photos!

Yes it made for some very beautiful pictures that day like you said it looks like something out of the movies.
