I was walking down O'Reilly Street, with the sun firmly planted over Havana. I passed by the Plaza de Armas Gardens, aimlessly, just letting myself be guided by the light and shadows cast by the facades. And suddenly, there it was: a large gate, with an imposing seal at the top, as if it guarded something more than just an entrance. I stopped. I don't know how I hadn't noticed it before.
Caminaba por la calle O’Reilly, con el sol bien plantado sobre La Habana. Pasé junto a los Jardines de la Plaza de Armas, sin rumbo fijo, solo dejándome llevar por la luz y las sombras que dibujan las fachadas. Y de pronto, ahí estaba: una gran puerta, con un sello imponente en lo alto, como si custodiara algo más que una entrada. Me detuve. No sé cómo no la había notado antes.
The gate marks the beginning of Avenida del Puerto, just to the right of the Sailors’ Monument. It feels like a threshold between the city and the sea. I was struck by its presence—by the way it simply stands there, welcoming this Havana paved with cobblestones and layered with history. I later learned it’s a replica of the old O'Reilly Gate, one of the entrances to the wall that once enclosed colonial Havana. It was demolished in the 1930s, but in 2017 it was returned to the place where it always belonged, reminding us of its story.
La puerta marca el inicio de la Avenida del Puerto, justo a la derecha del monumento a los Marinos. Es como un umbral entre la ciudad y el mar. Me impresionó su presencia, su forma de estar ahí , dando la bienvenida a esta Habana marcada por adoquines en sus calles, con toda la historia encima. Me enteré después que es una réplica de la antigua La Puerta de O’Reilly, una de las entradas de la muralla que rodeaba la Habana colonial. Fue demolida en los años treinta, pero en 2017 la devolvieron al lugar donde siempre debió estar recordándonos su historia.
From the sidewalk, I watched the little train go by along Avenida del Puerto, along the seafront to the other end of the Malecón. It seemed like a beautiful scene: the train, the gate, the monument, and in the background, the Christ of Havana, contemplating everything from the other shore. As if each element were in its place, waiting for someone to calmly observe it.
Desde la acera vi pasar el trencito que recorre la Avenida del Puerto, bordeando el mar hasta el otro extremo del Malecón. Me pareció una bonita escenal: el tren, la puerta, el monumento, y al fondo, el Cristo de La Habana, contemplando todo desde la otra orilla. Como si cada elemento estuviera en su sitio, esperando que alguien los mire con calma.
Next to the gate is a building currently used for housing. It has a plaque explaining the history of the Gate, and the words "Port Pilot" engraved on it. It made me think that this was its original purpose, linked to the movement of ships, to the entry and exit of the city by sea. Everything fits together: the gate, the seal, the sea, Christ, the train. It's a crossing point, a transit point, but also a place of memories.
Al lado de la puerta hay un edificio que actualmente es utilizado para viviendas y tiene una tarja donde se explica la historia de la Puerta, además lleva grabadas las palabras “Práctico del Puerto”. Me hizo pensar que ese fue su destino original, vinculado al movimiento de los barcos, a la entrada y salida de la ciudad por mar. Todo encaja: la puerta, el sello, el mar, el Cristo, el tren. Es un punto de cruce, de tránsito, pero también de recuerdos.
I took several photos around Avenida del Puerto: the sea, the light, the architecture. Everything in this area seems to shine with an ancient calm. But what captivated me most wasn't just what was visible, but the feeling of having discovered something that was always there. Sometimes we walk through places we think we know, and suddenly something stops us. A door, a word, a view. And then we understand that the city is also watching us, waiting for us to look at it again.

Pero lo que más me cautivó no fue solo lo visible, sino la sensación de haber descubierto algo que siempre estuvo ahí. A veces caminamos por lugares que creemos conocer, y de pronto algo nos detiene. Una puerta, una palabra, una vista. Y entonces entendemos que la ciudad también nos observa, esperando que la miremos de nuevo.
