Hi all 👋🏻
Today I want to share with you a selection of photographs I took while I was living right in the centre of Málaga city Spain for a while, and this pilgrimage came past my house. In Calle Compas de La Victoria. You can see it really well in this wide street.
ROMERIA DEL ROCÍO. La Real Hermandad de La Virgin del Rocío - this brotherhood started on their pilgrimage in the direction of El Rocío, a small village in the Province of Huelva close to Almonte.
Each year they meet up with other brotherhoods to worship the Virgin.
All around the country they travel up to 7 days, either on foot, on a horse or in their wagons towards El Rocio.
It is one of the most famous and mass pilgrimages in the world. It starts on the Saturday before Pentecost.
I was there in 2016 to see a small part of it, one of my neighbours joined in too… (she told me all about it)
The brotherhoods from Málaga that joined were around 600 people on 62 carriages/wagons. The ones passing by where I lived, was just a small selection, they were setting up in my street to start to join others.
You can find more information about this pilgrimage In this website!

Another website You can find information about it!
It States:
”HISTORY OF EL ROCIO.
This cult dates back to the 13th century, when a hunter from the village of Villamanrique (or Almonte, depending on which version of the story you follow) discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary in a tree trunk in the Doñana park.
A chapel was built where the tree stood, and it became a place of pilgrimage. Devotion to this particular version of the Virgin was initially a local affair.
Then, by the 17th century, hermandades (brotherhoods) were making the trip from nearby towns at Pentecost; by the 19th century, they came from all over Huelva, Cadiz and Seville, on a journey taking up to four days.
Over the next century, the cult of the Virgin del Rocio became more and more widespread, and these days participants come from as far away as Barcelona and the Canary Islands - not to mention tourists who travel from abroad, around Europe and even further afield.”
Let me show you now my selection of Photographs:
The street was filling up with horses and wagons, even mules and oxen.
I took a few details of some of the horses.
As the wagons pass by… music sounds, laughter, song and dance 💃🏻🕺🏻 Every body is having a great time.
Dancers in the wagons… 😁💃🏻💃🏻 With beautiful dresses.
Each wagon has a name and represents their brotherhood/ hermandad. The higher number the higher one is placed in the brotherhood, seniority.
I hear guitars playing… 🎸🎸🪕🪕
In the back there is room to sit and enjoy the views…
I do like to capture people when they don’t notice… you will see this going forward 😎 as I don’t want to be in “their faces” with my camera… I stay aside mostly 😉
This moment was precious though… the guitar player did notice me 😎 look at that smile 😃 🥰
A Virgin passes by on a cart… being pulled by oxen.
High five 🙌🏻 Do you see it?
The fun they have…
The oxen…
Some wagons are waiting for their passengers… to arrive.
More beautiful dresses, flamenco dresses 💃🏻💃🏻
Whole families are joining in.
Side views… the road is busy and I don’t want to jump in front of the horses and carts and people passing by.
More people getting in their wagons… joining in, on all the fun 🤩🤩
They are trying to get in while the wagon is moving… I mention this, so you see the whole picture.
More names and signs on the wagons. Some are so beautiful and colourful.
Also the younger ones are dressed up in flamenco dresses or skirts 💃🏻💃🏻
Oh, my neighbour is passing by with her mother.
There she is on the left 👋🏻🥰 Ana Maria, also an artist 👩🏻🎨
A long journey ahead of them.
They all joining in with the dancing and singing 🎵🎵🎶🎶🥰 beautiful… the atmosphere.
More ladies passing by, to join in.
Even plants can’t be missed on the balcony of the wagons… 🪴🪴🪴🪴
Another name…
Horses with their riders 😎 waiting to start…
Almost the end of it… the wagons are leaving the street by turning the corner, on their way of pilgrimage to El Rocío.
Some last details of the horses…
Bon voyage…
