Unwinding at Glenmore after a Stormy Year

in Pinmapple2 years ago (edited)

I went AWOL this week along with a couple of very special silvery folk. We all needed to get away from city life to the small South Coast village of Glenmore Beach, with the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks to soothe the soul.

I'd like to share some of the sights we enjoyed in this beautiful area down south. This is the ideal beach that offers something for the whole family - a safe swimming beach on one side and massive rocks that the fishermen love, on the other side. A perfect recipe for laidback holidays.

The natural boulders in the gardens of the resort, accommodate guests of the animal kind, Dassies, as we call the Hyrax rock rabbits. We did not see as many as on previous stays.

View from our patio that leads onto a beautifully manicured lawn.

We were literally a stone's throw from the beach and the many rocks for exploring by fisherman; Pulpit rock being everyone's favorite.
We were hoping to catch the beginning of the Sardine Run, but no such luck. We however did see signs that they were possibly on their way with much activity from the Humpback Whales and Dolphins, as well as Sea Gulls.

The young and agile can hop from one rock to the other, but thankfully there are many pathways above the rocky outcrops along the coastal vegetation for us oldies.

We were a group of eight; so booked two units at the unpretentious Glenmore Sands.

My sister-in-law had a bad fall the night before and is going for surgery next week to repair her shoulder which has been shattered, not just fractured. She was very brave and did not want to cancel, as they had invited her sister and brother-in-law. She perked up a little, with her arm in a sling, but was in great pain. We're just hoping the operation is going to be successful, something the surgeon cannot guarantee.

Glenmore Sands is a small self-catering resort with quaint features like natural large boulders in the gardens and on some patios, all adding to the charm of this little resort.

Part of the interior in the main building has maintained the graciousness of the original Green Dolphin Hotel hotel, which was built in the early 1900s, but later converted into self-catering units.

A swimming pool and jungle gym are great for families with little ones who are afraid of the ocean waves.

We were not as daring to show off our bods as these damsels, back in 1932!
All these faded old photographs are on display in the resort's main building.

The early bird catches the worm, and that phrase also rings true for fishermen. However, no fish were caught this time around, perhaps because they did not try hard enough and enjoyed staring at the ocean as it's been a really difficult year!

Back in 1946 there was plenty of fish in the sea but overfishing has led to anglers having to obtain a fishing license and limit the number of fish caught.

We enjoyed leisurely walks along the sandy stretch of white beach, stopping to pick up sea shells, and eventually ended up at what is left of the Nightingale, a ship that was stranded on the rocks at Glenmore Beach, Munster, in 1933.

Beyond that is more rocky outcrops, some with little bays which also is the hunting ground for fishermen.

Starting the days with amazing sunrises like this and ending off with sunsets that turned the sky into gorgeous hues, was the perfect beginning and end to the days.

The nighttime view from our patio while enjoying a braai (BBQ), snacks, and much chatting and laughter, was food for the soul!

The view from your balcony looks calming.

It was calming indeed @dandays, as was the sound of the ocean, just awesome.
Hope you're both keeping well 🙂

You're still the best host. = }

...and you're still the sweetest man...

Getting away for a short break does one the world of good, as mentioned last couple of years have been an uphill with no end in sight just yet.

!PIZZA

It was like a breath of fresh air especially after being overwhelmed by the happenings beforehand; Covid, rioting, Mom's illness and then the storms. What next, as climate change is playing havoc worldwide?
However, we are blessed to have places like this to escape to!
Thank you for popping in, and for the pizza Joan 🤗

Many walking around with PSD not realizing, we all need short breaks to catch our breath before able to go again. Chin up, keep positive with a smile when able.

Very true, the events of the past few years has affected all of us in one way or another xxx

We tire, yet carry on finding inner strength from these short breaks.

Yikes snow on all the mountains, you timed your visit well!

That's for sure, the weather was gorgeous! Really chilly today.

Thank you so much @pinmapple and @livinguktaiwan, what a thrill to see Glenmore Beach in the top 3💞

That looks like a fabulous place for a vacation. Love the way the rocks and plants look there. Also love the way the terrace was built to include the top of the boulder. I love when people are creative enough to included such things.

I enjoyed the way you included some local history alternately through the post. Loving those conservative swim suits too. :)

I hope your SIL's surgery goes well and better than they can imagine.

Thanks @jacey.boldart, my sister-in-law is having surgery this morning.
We return to Glenmore time & time again & also love how they've done the landscaping around the large boulders.
Yep, those gals were quite daring to wear revealing costumes like that😉

WOW 😍😍 what a view ♥️
Amazing pictures and you really captured the beauty in every one of them. I love seing travel posts like this and amazing envirement,we need it after covid and lockdown that for many meant that travel wasn't possible. Then I loved looking back at pictures I had taken on my travels and enjoy the memories 😉
Also travel posts like this one makes us feel like we there with you. I love the first picture alot with the garden plants and cool animal creatuons.

But the envirement over the ocean is amazing to. Thank you for sharing and taking me with you 🙏💕
Amazing pictures.. Loved it.

Happy sunday. Much love 🌹

Thank you @saffisara, this is one of our favourite holiday destinations, still unspoilt and really beautiful.
Of course being on the east coast one gets to see the most stunning sunrises, best in winter as the sun rises just before 7am but in summertime it's a little too early for me😉

Hi @lizelle. Hope you are fine. You just remind me of my sea trip. I enjoyed myself a lot with my family. The sea always fascinated me. Walking on the beach beat foot just amazing.

Thank you @mishkatfatima, you're so right, nothing beats a barefoot walk on the beach, stopping to pick up shells and just listening to the ocean!

This is the stuff of dreams. What an awesome breakaway. Sorry about your sister-in-law's shoulder!

I live for these types of breakaways, even though they are never in my budget or time! But what is the saying our youth have, you only live once, so if you do not do it now you might never experience it.

Thank you for sharing this lovely piece of our country! Until the next visit.

Thank you @fermentedphil, fortunately we still have unspoilt areas like that.
We count ourselves blessed to be able to have these midweek breaks, all thanks to investing in timeshare points. We would never have been able to have holidays like this all over SA & share with family & friends, the midweek bookings use less points so we're able to have more holidays. The bonus is that there are no crowds midweek.
My sister in law is having surgery this morning.

Best of wishes for the surgery.

And yes, those mid-weeks are the best. We went to Cullinan mid-week so we had the small town for ourselves. Too many people around are not nice.

And those timeshare things are the best! I remember the days my parents used them and took us along. Some of the best memories are made at those timeshare resorts and places.

Enjoy the travels! May there be many of them still.

Thank you @fermentedphil! My sister-in-law's surgery went well, she's just in a lot of pain as they had to screw in metal pieces. At least she can start healing now!

Healing is always the hardest part, especially convincing yourself to stay immobile so that recovery can happen. Best of luck!

That’s wonderful to escape for a while 😉 and what a view you had there.
Great captures, and so much along the beach to see and find.
Thanks for sharing @lizelle have a wonderful weekend further 👋🏻☀️

Thank you @littlebee4, it was an awesome break indeed.
Enjoy what is left of your weekend as well 🤗

You are so welcome @lizelle 😁 thank you kindly! Will do, enjoy yours 🤗☀️

That's a well-derserved break Lizzie! I'm sure it must to lovely to be looked after for a change instead of looking after others.

It was a fabulous and much-needed breakaway, and you're so right @livinguktaiwan, it was a really nice change being the guests and not the hosts, letting the hair down with much laughter and reminiscing with kindred spirits, all happy to go with the flow. The bonus of a midweek break is that one avoids the crowds, pure bliss.
Thank you for your kind words👌💖

Lovely! Both the views and the decoration in the resort, especially that photo from 1932! Always curious how they live back then!

I'm glad you enjoyed it @waybeyondpadthai! I'm the same, find it fascinating seeing the old photos and imagining how life was back then! Thank you for popping in🤗

It looks like a beautiful place for a few days away. There's nothing like a trip to the seaside to help to recharge your batteries.

A recharge it certainly was @kaazoom and one of our favourite places!

Beautiful photos!

Love the wilderness and solitutde of the beach! I've never camped next to the waves before but it's amongst the experience I'd love to have the most. Is there any chance to do it there?

Hi @gabrielatravels, there are many really nice camping resorts down that way. My parents always took us down there for annual camping holidays, I have no idea how my Mom managed to pack everything with 5 kids in tow, but we had lovely holidays!
