Linux Day is an Italian non-profit event, held annually every fourth Saturday in October, consisting of a set of contemporary events organized in various Italian cities, with the aim of promoting the GNU / Linux operating system and free software .

On October 26, 2019 (when the coronavirus pandemic was still not a threat, much less a reality, I had the opportunity to participate in Linux Day, invited by Italian friends, which took place in Siena. A beautiful city in Tuscany with a past that is reflected at every moment, at every step.

This time instead of buying you some free software I am going to show you in images and comments everything I could appreciate about this beautiful Italian city.

Siena is a very beautiful medieval city in the Gothic style that saw its splendor between the 12th and 13th centuries and even came to have a tough rivalry with Tuscany's own capital, Florence.

In the 6th century it suffered the consequences of a devastating plague, the Black Death, which wiped out a large part of the population. In the first phase the plague exterminated a third of the population. And at the end of the epidemic the city seemed uninhabited.

Siena Linux Day Program (2019) / Programa del Linux Day de Siena (2019)

The first place we see and can go from one end to the other is Plaza del Campo. Only the square of Trieste in northern Italy can rival in dimensions with the square of Siena.

Piazza del Campo (or more simply the Campo as the inhabitants of the city call it) is unique for its particular and very original shell shape, it is known throughout the world for its beauty and architectural integrity, as well as for being the place where the Palio di Siena is held twice a year.

The race consists of three laps around the track that surrounds the square, paved with slabs of pietra serena, which is dusted with a layer of tuff powder of adequate thickness, in a way that allows the horses to run, not without cheeky slipping on correspondence. curves. Among these, one of the most critical is the "San Martino curve".

The race, which runs rampant and often without reserve of cheap, sometimes bloody blows, leads to victory in only one district.

26.-Linux-Day-2019-Siena-Plaza del-Campo-1.png

Municipal Palace. / Palacio Municipal.

26.-Linux-Day-2019-Siena-Palacio-Municipal-1.png

It is the most important building that surrounds the Plaza del Campo. Inside it houses the Civic Museum.

Spectacular view of the Torre del Mangia. You can't climb it but they say it has a spectacular view of the entire city of Siena. It reaches 88 meters at the height of the last battlements. Even starting from a lower level, it reaches the same height as the bell tower of the Cathedral of Siena, this to symbolize the balance achieved between heavenly and earthly power, so that neither exceeds and imposes itself on the other.

It is one of the few places in Italy where the frescoes (paintings) were not commissioned by the church but by the rulers.

Hence, the themes present in the paintings are not so much religious but refer to the normal life of every day, trades, and of course chivalric themes, a classic of that time.

26.-Linux-Day-2019-Siena-Palacio-Municipal-4.png

Siena Cathedral. / Catedral de Siena.

The Cathedral of Siena, whose massif rises in the homonymous square, is one of the most famous examples of Italian Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. Accessing this place means elevating the spirit, opening up to art and knowing one of the most precious treasures of the city.

According to tradition, the current one replaces a first church dedicated to Mary, built around the century. IX, built on the site where there was a temple offered to Minerva.

Again through news without precise documentation, we learn that the building was consecrated in 1179, in the presence of the Sienese Pope Alexander III Bandinelli, after the peace with Barbarossa.

It is part of the Historic Center of Siena, and as such it is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The Crypt of the Siena Cathedral. / La Cripta de la Catedral de Siena.

26.-Linux-Day-2019-Siena-Cripta-de-Duomo.png

The last visit visit is to the Crypt of the Duomo of Siena

The crypt of the Cathedral of Siena is a complex of medieval archeology, located under the cathedral and rediscovered only in 1999.

It contains a series of thirteenth-century frescoes that were sealed a few decades after their drafting, for this reason they are presented today with extraordinarily bright colors, making them almost unique in the history of art.

The name of "crypt" is purely evocative: it is believed that there is another crypt of the cathedral, the original one, under the dome, in rooms that are still inaccessible today due to the risk of static problems.
