Recently, my family and I embarked on one of the most important trips of our lives: we left Cuba to begin a new chapter in Brazil. Four generations traveled together—my husband, my daughter, my grandmother, and my great-grandmother—where we experienced moments filled with excitement, discovery, and a little bit of fear, beginning a new chapter together. Today, I want to share with you what that experience was like, from leaving home to our arrival, including the stopover in the Dominican Republic that left us speechless.
Hace poco mi familia y yo emprendimos uno de los viajes más importantes de nuestra vida: dejamos Cuba para comenzar una nueva etapa en Brasil. Viajamos cuatro generaciones juntas —mi marido, mi niña, mi abuela y mi bisabuela— donde vivimos momentos llenos de emoción, descubrimientos y un poquito de miedo, iniciando juntos un nuevo capítulo. Hoy quiero compartirles cómo fue esa experiencia, desde la salida de casa hasta nuestra llegada, incluyendo la escala en República Dominicana que nos dejó sin palabras."
I'll tell you that our trip from Cuba to Brazil was an experience that will remain etched in my memory forever. Although I was a little hectic in the morning because I hadn't finished packing, it had been a bit difficult since we'd been without electricity for two days, so I finished almost at the time we were due to leave for the airport. After all the hustle and bustle, we left home at around 2 p.m., our hearts racing and our suitcases full of dreams. The drive to the airport in Cuba was silent, each of us thinking about what we were leaving behind: our homeland, our friends, our customs. However, the hope of giving my baby a better future filled us with courage. As we boarded the plane, excitement and nerves mingled; my grandmothers, holding hands, looked out the window with eyes full of nostalgia.
Les cuento que nuestro viaje de Cuba a Brasil fue una experiencia que quedará grabada en mi memoria para siempre. Apesar de que la mañana estaba un poco alborotada porque no había terminado de empacar , se me había hecho un poco difícil ya que llevabamos 2 días sin fluido eléctrico así que termine casi a la hora de irnos al aeropuerto y despues de tanto ajetreo salimos de casa muy a las 2pm, con el corazón acelerado y las maletas llenas de sueños. El camino al aeropuerto en Cuba fue silencioso, cada uno pensando en lo que dejábamos atrás: nuestra tierra, los amigos, las costumbres. Sin embargo, la esperanza de darle un mejor futuro a mi bebé nos llenaba de valor. Al subir al avión, la emoción y los nervios se mezclaron; mis abuelas apretadas de manos miraban por la ventanilla con ojos llenos de nostalgia.
After a while, we arrived in the Dominican Republic for a stopover, and there we were incredibly surprised: the airport was huge, modern, and full of shops, restaurants, and spaces that looked like something out of a movie. Everything was clean and bright, with lights illuminating the hallways and display cases full of things we hadn't seen in Cuba for a long time. My daughter couldn't stop looking at the toy stores, and my grandmother was amazed at how neat and organized everything was. We took the opportunity to eat something, try fresh juices, and simply enjoy this very different place. It was at that moment that we felt a mixture of admiration and a little fear: we were further and further from home, in a place where people spoke with different accents, and we still had another flight to reach our destination.
Después de un rato, llegamos a República Dominicana para hacer escala, y ahí la sorpresa fue enorme: el aeropuerto era inmenso, moderno y lleno de tiendas, restaurantes y espacios que parecían sacados de una película. Todo estaba limpio, brillante, con luces que iluminaban los pasillos y vitrinas repletas de cosas que en Cuba no habíamos visto en mucho tiempo. Mi niña no podía dejar de mirar las tiendas de juguetes, y mi abuela se quedó maravillada con lo ordenado y organizado que estaba todo. Aprovechamos para comer algo, probar jugos frescos y simplemente disfrutar de ese lugar tan diferente. Fue en ese momento cuando sentimos una mezcla de admiración y un poquito de miedo: estábamos cada vez más lejos de casa, en un lugar donde la gente hablaba con acento distinto, y aún nos quedaba otro vuelo para llegar a nuestro destino.
When we finally boarded the plane to Brazil, tiredness mingled with excitement. Upon landing, we felt the humid heat and that different air that seemed to welcome us. Everything was new: the signs in Portuguese, the people's voices, the landscapes. We also worried about what lay ahead: adapting, communicating well, taking care of my great-grandmother and my little girl in a new country. But together we found courage. That night in Brazil, even though the sounds were strange and we felt far from home, we knew the important thing was that we were together. The trip not only took us to another country, but it also brought us closer together as a family, teaching us to be brave, to laugh at the unexpected, and to trust that, although the path is uncertain, the most beautiful thing is to walk it together.
Cuando finalmente abordamos el avión hacia Brasil, el cansancio se mezclaba con la emoción. Al aterrizar, sentimos el calor húmedo y ese aire diferente que parecía darnos la bienvenida. Todo era nuevo: los letreros en portugués, las voces de la gente, los paisajes. También sentíamos preocupación por lo que vendría: adaptarnos, comunicarnos bien, cuidar de mi bisabuela y de mi niña en un país nuevo. Pero juntos nos dimos valor. Esa noche en Brasil, aunque los sonidos eran extraños y nos sentíamos lejos de casa, supimos que lo importante era que estábamos juntos. El viaje no solo nos llevó a otro país, sino que nos unió más como familia, enseñándonos a ser valientes, a reírnos de lo inesperado y a confiar en que, aunque el camino es incierto, lo más lindo es recorrerlo unidos.
