an unserem letzten Urlaubstag in Villefranche Sur Mer hatte ich mir nochmal eine schöne Wanderung ausgesucht. Ich wollte von unserer Unterkunft bis auf den gegenüberliegenden Berg zu einer Festung wandern. Das Fort du Mont Alban, ist eine historische militärische Festung, die sich auf dem Hügel Mont Boron zwischen Nizza und der Bucht von Villefranche-sur-Mer befindet.
Die Festung wurde zwischen 1557 und 1560 auf Befehl des Herzogs von Savoyen nach der Belagerung von Nizza im Jahr 1543 erbaut. Sie diente als wichtige Verteidigungsanlage, um die Küste Savoyens (zu der Nizza damals gehörte) zu schützen, und ist ein gut erhaltenes Beispiel für die Militärarchitektur aus der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts in Frankreich. Das Fort liegt strategisch günstig auf dem Hügel Mont Alban und bietet atemberaubende Panoramablicke auf die Baie des Anges (Engelsbucht) von Nizza auf der einen Seite und Villefranche-sur-Mer und das Cap Ferrat auf der anderen. Genau diese Ausblicke wollte ich mir natürlich nicht entgehen lassen.
Ich ging also los und die Straße entlang durch Ecken von Villefranche, die ich bisher noch nicht gesehen hatte. Die festung kam in meinem Auge immer näher und ich konnte schon hier schöne Ausblicke bei strahlendem Sonnenschein genießen. Am Ortsrand begann dann der Aufstieg auf den Mont Alban. Das war etwas tricky, da die steilen Wege teilweise dicht bewachsen und zugewuchert waren. Aber ich kam gut voranuch wenn die Sonne schon zu dieser frühen Urhzeit ganz schön brannte. Je weiter ich nach oben kam, desto besser wurde der Ausblick. Von hier konnte ich die ganze Bucht und das Kap Ferrat überblicken.
Oben angekommen satnd ich vor der mächtigen Festung, die aber leider verschlossen war, so dass ich sie mir nicht von innen anschauen konnte. Beeindruckend fand ich die Dächer der Türme, die in verschieden farbigen Ziegeln gedeckt waren. Von hier oben hatte man natürlich den besten Ausblick, einfach traumhaft. Nachdem ich mich satt gesehen hatte und eine Trinkpause eingelegt hatte ging ich weiter in Richtung Nizza. Auf der anderen Seite des Hügels fand ich dann den Aussichtspunkt den ich gesucht hatte. Von hier aus hatte man einen sagenhaften Blick über die Stadt Nizza. Unten im Hafen lag noch die große Luxusyacht, die wir am Vortag aus der Nähe betrachtet hatten.
Auf dem Weg zurück kam ich den berg hinab durch ein Viertel mit tollen Villen. Die alte gelbe Villa auf dem Bild stand zum Verkauf und wartete nur auf eine Renovierung. Die anderen Ville hier waren bereits zum großen teil renoviert oder Neubauten und vermutlich unbezahlbar. Als ich unten ankam, sah ich auch schon das Stadtschild von Nizza, ich aber machte mich in der entgegengesetzten Richtung auf den Weg zurück nach Villefranche. Als ich wieder an unserem Hotel ankam, hatte ich 10 Kilometer gewandert und war 2,5 Stunden unterwegs gewesen. Ein toller Abschluss des Urlaubs wie ich fand.

On our last day of vacation in Villefranche-sur-Mer, I chose another beautiful hike. I wanted to hike from our accommodation up the opposite mountain to a fortress. The Fort du Mont Alban is a historic military fortress located on the hill of Mont Boron, between Nice and the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer.
The fortress was built between 1557 and 1560 on the orders of the Duke of Savoy after the Siege of Nice in 1543. It served as an important defensive structure to protect the Savoy coast (to which Nice belonged at the time) and is a well-preserved example of mid-16th-century military architecture in France. The fort is strategically located on the hill of Mont Alban and offers breathtaking panoramic views of Nice's Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels) on one side and Villefranche-sur-Mer and Cap Ferrat on the other. Of course, I didn't want to miss these views.
So I set off, walking along the road through parts of Villefranche I hadn't seen before. The fortress came ever closer in my view, and even from there I could enjoy beautiful views in the bright sunshine. At the edge of town, the climb up Mont Alban began. It was a bit tricky, as some of the steep paths were densely overgrown and overgrown. But I made good progress, even though the sun was already quite blazing at this early hour. The further I climbed, the better the view became. From here I could see the entire bay and Cape Ferrat.
Once I reached the top, I stood in front of the mighty fortress, which was unfortunately closed, so I couldn't see inside. I found the roofs of the towers, which were covered in differently colored tiles, impressive. Of course, the best view from up here was simply fantastic. After I'd had my fill of the view and took a drink break, I continued towards Nice. On the other side of the hill, I found the viewpoint I was looking for. From here, you had a fabulous view over the city of Nice. The large luxury yacht we had seen up close the day before was still moored in the harbor.
On the way back down the hill, I passed through a neighborhood of magnificent villas. The old yellow villa in the picture was for sale and was just waiting to be renovated. The other villas here were largely already renovated or newly built and probably unaffordable. When I reached the bottom, I saw the Nice city sign, but I headed back to Villefranche in the opposite direction. By the time I got back to our hotel, I had hiked 10 kilometers and been on the road for 2.5 hours. A great end to the vacation, I thought.
