Gordes has the official status of "The most beautiful village in France". Although I would not can it neither village nor town, because in my opinion, villages don’t look like that, and it’s not very different from other cities, where the population is several times smaller and yet these are cities. Anyway, Gordes is the pride of local residents and even the whole country.
And if you read somewhere that the town you want to visit has this status, then you will definitely visit it. Since this badge of honor is awarded only to villages that have more than two ancient architectural monuments, the city has retained its ancient appearance and retains this style to this day, even despite the new houses. And also more than 2000 people should live in such a city. Therefore, it will still be a small and cozy town with developed infrastructure for tourists.

Like many cities in this region and beyond, the city is located on a mountain. The village took its name from the name of the castle, which was built at the very top of the mountain. All the small towns like Gordes are very close to each other, so we planned a whole day for a tour of them, and we managed to do everything.
To be honest, I got the full impression that, historically, every rich prince, marquis or rich and noble landowner with any other title, built a castle on the mountain around which a village was formed over time, since the castle had to be provided with labor and servants. And so each prince lived on his own mountain and dreamed that he would be even richer and more influential, and in order for their dreams to come true, they attacked neighboring castles in order to expand the borders of their possession. So they fought with each other. Until a more powerful army came and captured them.
The history of Gordes is richer, and it began long before those princes appeared there. First, the Celts lived on this land, then there was the Roman Empire. And only then did the history of the Middle Ages start. A military garrison was built here, and later, it was rebuilt into a castle. Gordes castle went from one owner to another many times.
Meanwhile, we walked towards the city center and admired the beauty of this stone town.
And here is the castle itself, which gave the name to Gordes city. In its current form, the castle was rebuilt in the 16th century, although the first mentions of the castle date back to the 11th century. The castle is still well-preserved. Now the castle houses a museum and a tourist office. The area in front of the castle is small and taking a full-length shot is not so easy.
Victor Vasarely, a famous Hungarian abstract artist, became the castle's owner in 1970. The artist used Gordes castle as a museum and an exhibition of his own works. Oddly enough, he attracted the first wave of tourists who visited this cute town. The exhibition-museum was open until 1996. And since this year, Gordes Castle has been a museum of the artist Paul Mara, who was a resident of the village of Gordes.
But we didn’t go to the museum, as we decided to leave time for other cities that were on our list to visit that day. So we just walked around the city. We truly admired its beauty and antiquity.
The life of the city was in full swing and, unlike other towns, you can see many European tourists here. Of course, I expected a lot, but not such a vibrant life in a small village in France. This place is really popular.
Partly thanks to the film “A Good Year” (2006), which was filmed here, and many tourists want to follow in the footsteps of the main character.
Tourists still enjoy exploring Gordes castle; they photograph it from all angles.
Since the main emphasis in the city is on tourism, of course there are restaurants and private shops with handmade goods at every step in the city. For example, beautiful dishes by local artisans.
In the center of the square there is a monument to all those who fell while defending the city.
Among the stone city, Simiane Park stands out as a bright green spot.
Hidden from us behind lush greenery is the Hotel de Ville, or, more simply put, the City Hall. And this is another attraction of the city, a fountain that was installed here in 1342.
We go to the Saint-Firmin church (18th century). The interior decoration i impressed us. At first glance, it seems that the walls of the church are covered with wallpaper, such a bright, small and symmetrical pattern adorns its walls. The niches are decorated with patterns - also an unexpected decorative element.
No matter how much we walked around the city, we always returned to the castle towers; it attracted us like a magnet.
There are many art galleries in the city. There you can buy paintings and reproductions of famous artists whose works are associated with Gordes city.
Well, what is an old medieval city without narrow streets?
Of course, a tour of the city up and down the uneven old steps is not easy for everyone, so many people sit down to rest right there.
Buying souvenirs in this city will not be a problem, as I already wrote, everything here is geared towards the tourist flow.
While walking around the city, we accidentally wandered onto an observation deck. By the way, right next to this city there is one of the largest lavender fields.
It was a great tour of a chic and beautiful city, or rather a village in France. Which I recommend to you, and after watching the film, you will definitely want to visit it, since the city has its own indescribable atmosphere. In general, Gordes is interesting precisely for its style and atmosphere; here you don’t need to run around the sights, just stroll along the stone streets.
