There are many cities in the world that we have already visited. They vary in size and shape: from large metropolises with a minimum of historical buildings to those that combine modern business with a restful atmosphere. There are also small towns with zero industry and almost no offices, but a truly overwhelming concentration of attractions. When I was thinking about which cities were the most interesting in Latvia, the first city that came to mind was Sigulda.
Before going to any new place, I always look for information about it. And in many sources I read about Sigulga, it was called the Switzerland of Latvia. The city is settled on the mountainous banks of the Gauja River, and the river separates the city in two sides. I really liked the views of the city that we saw standing on the riverbank. The true beauty of the city opens up from there. And to see the ruins of the city's castle, you don't have to go anywhere, because they are located in the very center of the city.
The first thing that greeted us in Sigulda was a clock seen in the square. This beautiful watch has the same name as a popular Latvian confectionery factory. If you translate the name Laima to English, it is happiness.
After visiting the castle, we decided to take a closer look at St. Bertold Lutheran Church, since it was just a few steps from the castle. I knew that the church is quite old (it was built in the 13th century), and now it has been reconstructed. There is a legend about this church. According to legend, in order for the church to remain stable, a brother and sister were immortalized alive in the altar columns. Behind the church there is a beautiful small park with working fountains.
It is a very green city. We were able to enjoy walks in the many parks and squares. They are on every corner, full of trees and blooming flower beds. I got the impression that there is no manufacturing in the city, so the air was very clean.
Sigulda is famous for its monuments. Some are man-made, like the castles that are popular with tourists, others are created by nature itself, like Gutman's cave, which I have already mentioned in my blog.
From the city center you can get to the only cable car in Latvia, which is located on a hill. Well, finally, the last of the attractions of these places that I want to talk about today. There are not two castles in Sigulda, but two and a half. It is to this half that the cable car leads from the center of Sigulda.

Built in the 13th–14th centuries, it burned down during the Polish-Swedish war (17th century). Since then, no one has rebuilt it. On our way to the castle, we stopped to admire the unusual installations. To be honest, at first I thought they were simple ventilation pipes from some underground structure. And this walking stick square was opened in her honor. I can understand this, because Sigulda is a mountainous place. In the past, people used walking sticks if they wanted to move comfortably in the city. They helped not to get tired when climbing hills.
One more interesting installation - the orchestra that greeted us on the square in front of the castle. I already wrote about Old and New Sigulda castles in my previous blog.

A very valuable site, installation or monument – two posts, one of which holds bicycle repair tools (in case something breaks on the road, you can fix it here), and the other post holds a bicycle pump. This is the first time I've seen such a wonderful gesture of concern for cyclists! We couldn't pass by and stopped to take a picture of such a monument!
We continued our journey to a fairly large amusement park. A park with many attractions. There is also a panda park, a toboggan run, a climbing wall and playgrounds - lots of entertainment for both children and their parents. Of course, we had to stop there for a while, because we were with two children.
If we talk about Sigulda's shortcomings, I didn't find any major ones. I think there could be more cafes in the center, since most of them are near the train station. We also didn't find any shops where you could buy water or snacks.
Sigulda left for us a good impression. It was a pleasant city to spend a couple of days wandering around the city and its sights. However, I think, it can be more attractive to active children and curious adults.
Perhaps those who travel a lot will not find any world-famous attractions or anything surprising in Sigulda. However, we are glad that we visited this small, quiet, clean and well-maintained town with so many interesting places to visit. It left us with many warm memories. Sigulda was like a cherry on the cake for us, bringing adventures to the trip, without which our trip would not have been so interesting.

Tai labai žalias miestas. Galėjome mėgautis pasivaikščiojimais po daugybę parkų ir aikščių. Jų yra ant kiekvieno kampo, pilnų medžių ir žydinčių gėlynų. Susidarė įspūdis, kad mieste nėra jokios gamybos, todėl oras buvo labai švarus.
Sigulda garsėja savo paminklais. Kai kurie yra žmogaus sukurti, pavyzdžiui, turistų pamėgtos pilys, kiti – pačios gamtos sukurti, pavyzdžiui, Gutmano ola, apie kurią jau rašiau savo tinklaraštyje.

Pakeliui į pilį sustojome pasigrožėti neįprastomis instaliacijomis. Tiesą sakant, iš pradžių maniau, kad tai paprasti ventiliacijos vamzdžiai iš kokio nors požeminio statinio. Paieškojusi internete, radau, kad tai garsiosios Siguldos lazdos. Be to, šios lazdos yra populiariausias suvenyras, kurį turistai perka Siguldoje. Ir ši lazdų aikštė buvo atidaryta jų garbei. Galiu tai suprasti, nes Sigulda yra kalnuota vieta. Anksčiau žmonės naudodavo lazdas, jei norėdavo patogiai judėti mieste. Jos padėdavo nepavargti kopiant į kalvas.

Labai vertinga vieta, instaliacija ar paminklas – du stulpai, viename iš kurių laikomi dviračių remonto įrankiai (jei kas nors sulūžtų kelyje, galite tai sutaisyti čia), o kitame stulpe – dviračių pompa. Pirmą kartą matau tokį nuostabų rūpesčio dviratininkais gestą! Negalėjome praeiti pro šalį ir sustojome nufotografuoti tokio paminklo!
Buvęs vandens bokštas, dabar kavinė! Viduje gal 4 aukštai, lankymas -2eur. Labai įdomus objektas.
Buvęs saulės vonių paviljonas. Įdomu būtų pamatyti senas foto, kaip tos vonios vykdavo. Ieškojau internete, bet neradau.
Tęsėme kelionę į gana didelį pramogų parką. Parką su daugybe atrakcionų. Taip pat yra pandų parkas, rogučių trasa, laipiojimo siena ir žaidimų aikštelės – daug pramogų tiek vaikams, tiek jų tėveliams. Žinoma, turėjome ten trumpam sustoti, nes buvome su dviem vaikais.
Jei kalbėtume apie Siguldos trūkumus, didelių neradau. Manau, centre galėtų būti daugiau kavinių, nes dauguma jų yra netoli traukinių stoties. Taip pat neradome jokių parduotuvių, kuriose būtų galima nusipirkti vandens ar užkandžių.
Sigulda mums paliko gerą įspūdį. Tai malonus miestas praleisti porą dienų klaidžiojant po miestą ir jo lankytinas vietas. Tačiau manau, kad jis būtų patrauklesnis aktyviems vaikams ir smalsiems suaugusiems.
Galbūt tie, kurie daug keliauja, Siguldoje neras jokių pasaulinio garso lankytinų vietų ar ko nors stebinančio. Tačiau džiaugiamės, kad aplankėme šį nedidelį, ramų, švarų ir gerai prižiūrimą miestelį su tiek daug įdomių lankytinų vietų. Jis paliko daug šiltų prisiminimų. Sigulda mums buvo tarsi vyšnia ant torto, į kelionę atnešusi nuotykių, be kurių mūsų kelionė nebūtų buvusi tokia įdomi.

I knew Switzerland as a very clean, nature-filled, and green country and Sigulda looks the same, it just varies in architecture and installations. The area is so clean so you must had a good stroll around enjoying the extraordinary moment of being in that heavenly place.
This clock is stunning and is my favorite feature of the place. It is standing in majestic manner and Icannot help but adore it. The photography I guess made it more appealing to my eyes. That's why it is called happiness in translation because it brings happiness to the ones who watch it. I had a good read. This place carries a lot of purpose to various people like cyclist and kids.
