Rumba – Spectacle and Devotion
Rumba shows are an important part of the tourist offer in Cuba and like to fulfil all the clichés of the visitors. But as superficial as some shows may be: Behind the spectacle you can feel something real, genuine and very lively. The source of Cuban rumba is deeply religious.
The alley »Callejon de Hamel« is located in the Vedado district of Havana. There are meeting two worlds: tourists and locals, art and commerce, show and exploding life. The magical place is worth a visit at any time. Especially recommended: Every Sunday from noon, the alley becomes a stage for rousing rumba performances for a few hours.

Rumba-Shows sind fester Bestandteil des touristischen Angebots auf Kuba und erfüllen gerne alle Klischeevorstellungen der Besucher. Aber so oberflächlich manche Shows auch wirken: Hinter dem Spektakel ahnt man etwas Echtes, Unverfälschtes und sehr Lebendiges. Die Quelle der kubanischen Rumba ist tief religiös.
Die Gasse »Callejon de Hamel« liegt im Stadtteil Vedado von Havanna. Zwei Welten treffen dort aufeinander: Touristen und Einheimische, Kunst und Kommerz, Show und pralles Leben. Der magische Ort ist jederzeit einen Besuch wert. Besonders zu empfehlen: Jeden Sonntag ab 12 Uhr wird die Gasse für einige Stunden zur Bühne für mitreißende Rumba-Darbietungen.

From the old town (»Habana vieja«) you get to the »Callejon de Hamel« in about 30 to 40 minutes on foot. The walk will get you through the »Centro« district and gives an authentic impression of life in the city.
Von der Altstadt (»Habana vieja«) kann man die »Callejon de Hamel« in etwa 30 bis 40 Minuten zu Fuß erreichen. Der Weg führt durch das Viertel »Centro« und vermittelt einen authentischen Eindruck vom Leben in der Stadt.

The name of the small alley comes from Fernando Belleau Hamel, an American of German and French roots. Señor Hamel bought land at the beginning of the 20th century to process scrap metal. He built houses for his workers on the spot. This is how »Callejon de Hamel« came about.
Der Name der Gasse kommt von Fernando Belleau Hamel, einem Amerikaner mit deutschen und französischen Wurzeln. Señor Hamel kaufte zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts Grundstücke, um dort Schrott zu verwerten. Für seine Arbeiter baute er an Ort und Stelle Wohnhäuser. Daraus wurde die »Callejon de Hamel«.

On 21 April 1990, Salvador Gonzáles Escalon began making sculptures from scrap metal and painting walls in the »Callejon de Hamel«. Salvador was born in Camagüey in 1948 and acquired his skills as a self-taught artist. He made the »Callejon de Hamel« what it is today: a living centre of Afro-Cuban culture.
Salvador Gonzáles Escalon still has his artistic headquarters here and also likes to explain his art to curious tourists. The idiosyncratic works of art embody Cuba's religious and cultural syncretism.
Am 21. April 1990 begann Salvador Gonzáles Escalon in der »Callejon de Hamel« Skulpturen aus Schrott zu bauen und Mauern zu bemalen. Salvador wurde 1948 in Camagüey geboren und erwarb seine künstlerischen Fähigkeiten als Autodidakt. Er machte die »Callejon de Hamel« zu dem, was sie heute ist: ein lebendiges Zentrum afrokubanischer Kultur.
Nach wie vor hat Salvador Gonzáles Escalon hier sein künstlerisches Hauptquartier und erklärt auch gerne neugierigen Touristen seine Werke. Die eigenwilligen Kunstwerke verkörpern den religiösen und kulturellen Synkretismus Kubas.
Many pictures and sculptures are inspired by the religious ideas of the Cubans. From African heritage and Christian influences, a world of its own has emerged, which is only inadequately described by buzzwords such as syncretism, Santería, Orisha. Faith is not based on written traditions, but on experience: What counts is the religious experience of the individual, in which song and dance play a very important role.
Viele Darstellungen sind von den religiösen Vorstellungen der Kubaner inspiriert. Aus afrikanischem Erbe und christlichen Einflüssen ist eine eigene Welt entstanden, die durch Schlagworte wie Synkretismus, Santería, Orisha nur unzureichend beschrieben wird. Der Glaube beruht nicht auf Schriften, sondern auf dem Erleben: Es zählt die religiöse Erfahrung des Einzelnen, bei der Gesang und Tanz eine ganz entscheidende Rolle spielen.

I grew up in disillusioned post-war Germany. Religion did not play a big role in our family's everyday life, apart from traditional Christian traditions. But I have to admit: At good rumba performances in Cuba, you can feel something powerful, alive, wherever this feeling originates. If you ever come to Cuba, you should not miss Sunday noon in the »Callejon de Hamel« and try it out to see what effect it has on you.
Ich bin im ernüchterten Nachkriegsdeutschland aufgewachsen. Im Alltag unserer Familie spielte Religion keine große Rolle, abgesehen von den hergebrachten christlichen Traditionen. Aber ich muss zugeben: Bei guten Rumba-Vorstellungen in Kuba kann man etwas Kraftvolles, Lebendiges spüren, wo immer dieses Gefühl auch seinen Ursprung hat. Wer je nach Kuba kommt, sollte sich den Sonntagmittag im »Callejon de Hamel« nicht entgehen lassen und einmal testen, wie das auf ihn wirkt.

My wife and I stayed in Cuba at the beginning of March 2020 and of course visited the »Callejon de Hamel« as we have done before. It may have been the last performance before the lockdown, when the Cuban authorities banned all events of this kind because of Covid.
Let us hope that this wonderful tradition will continue. Until then, let us enjoy some photos.
Meine Frau und ich waren zuletzt Anfang März 2020 in Kuba und haben natürlich wie auch schon früher die »Callejon de Hamel« besucht. Möglicherweise war das die letzte Vorstellung vor dem Lockdown, bei dem die kubanischen Behörden alle Veranstaltungen dieser Art wegen Covid untersagten.
Hoffen wir, dass diese wunderbare Tradition weitergeführt wird. Bis dahin: Lassen wir die Bilder wirken.

No way through the crowd watching dancers and musicians. But there are some onlookers above the wall.

You can only capture the atmosphere of a rumba session very inadequately with photos. My wife made a short video with her mobile phone, which perhaps gives a better impression. There are of course many videos on Youtube, some of them very good. But nothing can replace the personal experience on the spot. Man kann die Atmosphäre einer Rumba-Session mit Fotos nur sehr unzureichend einfangen. Meine Frau hat mit dem Handy ein kurzes Video gemacht, das vielleicht einen besseren Eindruck vermittelt. Es gibt natürlich viele, zum Teil sehr gute Videos auf Youtube. Aber nichts kann die persönliche Erfahrung an Ort und Stelle ersetzen.

The first Orisha appears: Elegguá opens and closes the paths. His colours are red and black. He corresponds to St. Anthony of Padua.
Der erste Orisha tritt auf: Elegguá öffnet und schließt die Wege. Seine Farben sind rot und schwarz. Er entspricht dem Heiligen Antonius von Padua.
Oggún is associated with iron, mountains and forests. He is also the Orisha of technology. His colours are red and green. In Havana, he is equated with Saint Peter.
Oggún verbindet man mit Eisen, Bergen und Wäldern. Er ist auch der Orisha der Technologie. Seine Farben sind rot und grün. In Havanna wird er mit Petrus gleichgesetzt.
Ochún is the mistress of rivers and embodies love. Her colour is yellow. Cubans adore her figure in the Holy Virgin of Cobre near Santiago de Cuba.
Ochún ist die Herrin der Flüsse und verkörpert die Liebe. Ihre Farbe ist gelb. Ihre Gestalt verehren die Kubaner in der Heiligen Jungfrau von Cobre bei Santiago de Cuba.
Ochún is always laughing. In the orisha of love, the joy of life is expressed in a special way.

Yemayá is the Orisha of the sea and motherhood. Her colour is blue.
Yemayá ist die Orisha des Meeres und der Mutterschaft. Ihre Farbe ist blau.
Yemayá always looks serious. She is worshipped in the Holy Virgin of Regla, a quarter opposite Old Havana on the other side of the Bay.
Yemayá blickt immer ernst. Man verehrt sie in der Heiligen Jungfrau von Regla, einem Viertel gegenüber der Altstadt von Havanna auf der anderen Seite der Hafenbucht.
The performance last for hours. There are no real breaks, always something is going on, maybe that the stage is hijacked by children.
Die Vorführungen dauern Stunden. Es gibt keine richtigen Pausen, immer ist irgendetwas los und sei es, dass die Bühne von Kindern gekapert wird.
Guaguancó is a dance for couples. Probably the most popular style of rumba, it recreates the ancient game between man and woman.
Guaguancó wird von Paaren getanzt. Der wohl beliebteste Stil der Rumba stellt das uralte Spiel zwischen Mann und Frau nach.

Vielen Dank für Dein Interesse, das freut mich sehr. Wir waren drei Mal in Kuba und haben immer noch nicht genug. Das Land ist ziemlich einfach zu bereisen. Man kann auch schon jetzt wieder nach Kuba reisen, aber ich würde davon abraten, erst Mal das Ende der derzeitigen Restriktionen abwarten. Ich habe mehrere Beiträge zu Reisezielen in einem Blog geschrieben, vielleicht interessiert es Dich auch:

werde Kuba definitiv mal besuchen, aber denke auch eher nach der Pandemie oder mit weniger Beschränkungen, Quarantäne muss nicht sein ;) ach wie cool dass du sogar eine eigene website mit blog hast, werde mich da noch genauer umschauen danke für den link :) Baracoa in Kuba sieht auf den Fotos auch echt toll aus :)
Die Infos in dem Blog sind nicht mehr ganz aktuell, sie beziehen sich auf die Jahre 2014/2015. An den Sehenswürdigkeiten hat sich natürlich nichts geändert. Baracoa war 2016 Opfer eines schweren Hurrikans, da ist manches kaputt gegangen. Gerade Baracoa ist aber nach wie vor definitiv eine Reise wert. Kuba ist ja schon wegen der US-Blockade in der Zeit stehen geblieben, und innerhalb Kubas gilt das für Baracoa noch einmal in ganz besonderem Maße, weil es relativ abgelegen ist.
oh danke für die info :) hört sich aber gut an und finde es manchmal echt interessant nach einiger zeit orte wieder zu sehen, besonders dann auch für dich was den ein oder anderen ort dort betrifft :)
