🇫🇷 Je me lance dans le récit de quelques escales. Je ne vais pas les faire dans l'ordre chronologique, juste par envie des histoires pour dépoussiérer quelques vieux souvenirs. Nous sommes aujourd'hui au Vanuatu. Lorsque je dis aujourd'hui, je parle du jour de l'écriture de ce récit qui date de 15 années en arrière ! Sur les conseils d'un plaisancier Français croisé aux douanes de Efate, la capitale du Vanuatu, je prends la direction d'Emae Island. Les plongées y seraient belles et l'ambiance très villageoise. Aurora file à 7 noeuds sans trop forcer. Les alizés soufflent dans le sens de la marche, tout va bien. Enfin, pour être honnête si le bateau se porte bien, le capitaine lui souffre d'une cigatera. Cette toxine relayée par la chaine alimentaire des poissons et que je soupçonne avoir attrapée avec un poisson offert par un pêcheur de Havannah Harbourg. Je ressens une sensation bizarre dans les genoux, pas vraiment une douleur, disons une fatigue permanente. J'arrive ainsi à devant Emae Island et débarque sur la plage où quelques personnes me regardent faire.

When I say today, I am talking about the day of writing this story that dates back 15 years! On the advice of a French yachtsman met at the customs of Efate, the capital of Vanuatu, I take the direction of Emae Island. The dives there would be beautiful and the atmosphere very village. Aurora flies at 7 knots without too much force. The trade winds blow in the direction of travel, everything is fine. Finally, to be honest if the boat is doing well, the captain suffers from a cigatera. This toxin relayed by the fish food chain and that I suspect having caught with a fish offered by a fisherman from Havannah Harburg. I feel a strange sensation in my knees, not really pain, let’s say permanent fatigue. I thus arrive in front of Emae Island and land on the beach where some people watch me do.

🇫🇷 Prenant doucement les habitudes coutumières, je vais saluer les pêcheurs et demande à rencontrer le chef pour lui présenter mes intentions de plongée et surtout me présenter moi. Car ici "la coutume" reste dans une sincérité désintéressée. Ce n'est en fait ni plus ni moins qu'un geste de politesse. Ce n'était pas vraiment le cas en Calédonie où parfois l'argent rentre en compte et fait passer la coutume pour un ticket d'entrée payant. La rencontre avec le chef est très cordiale et je repartirai avec un sac rempli de fruits et légumes ! Le chef me renseigne également vers une personne qui m'emmène sur le littoral et me cueille un bon sac de feuilles d'un arbre côtier. C'est selon lui le parfait remède à la cigatera. A prendre en infusion à volonté. Chose que je ferai sans la moindre hésitation. Paco, l'un des pêcheurs m'ayant vu arriver me parle d'un récif, Cook Reef, où les paysages sous-marins seraient très riches. Le rendez-vous est pris, Paco viendra à bord et me guidera vers le récif.

This was not really the case in Caledonia where sometimes money enters the account and makes the custom pass for a paid entry ticket. The meeting with the chef is very cordial and I will leave with a bag full of fruits and vegetables! The chef also informs me to a person who takes me to the coast and picks up a good bag of leaves from a coastal tree. It is according to him the perfect remedy for cigatera. To be taken as an infusion at will. Something I will do without the slightest hesitation. Paco, one of the fishermen who saw me arrive, talks to me about a reef, Cook Reef, where the underwater landscapes would be very rich. The appointment is made, Paco will come on board and guide me to the reef.

🇫🇷 Il nous faudra 1 à 2 heures pour rallier le récif. Ce récif est assez petit, quelques centaines de mètres de large ou plutôt de circonférence tant il est circulaire. Difficile de trouver une zone appropriée au mouillage, mais nous finissons par y trouver un espace convenable. Paco m'indique un endroit où plonger. Je le laisse à bord, et m'immerge. Dès les première secondes je comprends que l'endroit est exceptionnel. L'eau est limpide, les coraux ont tous une taille démeusurée, les poissons vont du tout petit au requin en passant par des thons d'une taille plus que respectable. Le courant est fort, les éliselles balancent de droite à gauche donnant la sensation d'un bon mistral établi, et je me régale à photographier ces paysages uniques. J'ai l'impression d'être le premier à venir plonger ici tant l'isolement et la beauté des lieux les font passer pour vierges. Mais même si les plongeurs passent exceptionnellement ici, je sais que je ne suis pas le premier, Paco me le confirmera.

Difficult to find a suitable area for anchorage, but we end up finding a suitable space there. Paco shows me a place to dive. I leave him on board, and immerse myself. From the first seconds I understand that the place is exceptional. The water is clear, the corals are all smaller in size, the fish range from very small to sharks and tuna of a more than respectable size. The current is strong, the columns swing from right to left giving the sensation of a good established wind, and I enjoy photographing these unique landscapes. I feel like I am the first to come dive here as the isolation and beauty of the places make them seem untouched. But even if the divers exceptionally pass here, I know that I am not the first, Paco will confirm it to me.

🇫🇷 Je profite de Cook Reef mais l'endroit n'étant pas protéger, je ne peux pas y retourner à volonté. Il faut savoir profiter des choses rares ! La cigatera quant à elle semble ne pas résister à mes tisanes, les douleurs disparaissent. Déjà plusieurs jours passés ici, je continue ma route vers le nord en me promettant de revenir ici un jour.	🇬🇧 I take advantage of Cook Reef but since the place is not protected, I can’t go back there at will. You have to know how to enjoy rare things! As for the cigatera, it seems not to resist my herbal teas, the pains disappear. Already several days spent here, I continue my journey towards the north by promising to come back here one day.
