Finally, my exams are over, and since my Fiancée is still with me in Germany, I booked myself a holiday early this year.

This is going to be a series of posts about visiting 4 countries in only 5 days, starting with Aachen, as our deer Friend @detlev invited us. It was an offer that we couldn't resist.
Anyway, enough of rambling time to show you the beautiful city:

Endlich sind meine Prüfungen vorbei, und da meine Verlobte noch bei mir in Deutschland ist, habe ich mir dieses Jahr frühzeitig einen >Urlaub gebucht.

Dies wird eine Reihe von Blogs über unsere Reise in 4 Länder innerhalb von nur 5 Tagen sein, beginnend mit Aachen, da unser lieber >@detlev uns eingeladen hatte. Es war ein Angebot, dem wir einfach nicht widerstehen konnten.

Aber genug geredet, Zeit, euch die wunderschöne Stadt zu zeigen:

A bit of History

Aachen is a historic city in western Germany, located near the borders of Belgium and the Netherlands. Yes, this means you can quickly hop between countries, just run around in a circle, and you'll cross multiple borders in no time!

Aachen ist eine historische Stadt im Westen Deutschlands, direkt an der Grenze zu Belgien und den Niederlanden gelegen. Ja, das bedeutet, dass man hier blitzschnell zwischen den Ländern hin- und herspringen kann. Lauf einfach im Kreis, jup viel mehr muss man nicht tun!

Anyway, Aachen has deep roots dating back to Roman times. Known for its hot springs, the city became a favoured retreat for people from all over Europe. First, it was the Roman soldiers, in the 8th century for Charlemagne, he would come to Aachen to "wash off the dirt and sin", at least metaphorically said. To be more historically correct though Charlemagne came to Aachen as he believed that the hot springs have therapeutic benefits.

Eventually, in Medieval and early modern times, the hot spring baths remained in use however the bathing culture changed. However, Aachen did see a revival as a spa town in the 18th and 19th centuries but this didn't last long as many of the historic bathhouses were heavily damaged during World War 1 & 2. Aachens tiefe historische Wurzeln, reichen bis in die Römerzeit. Bekannt für die heißen Quellen, wurde die Stadt schnell zu einem beliebten Zufluchtsort für Menschen aus ganz Europa. Anfangs waren es römische Soldaten, später, im 8. Jahrhundert, kam Karl der Große nach Aachen, um sich hier von „Schmutz und Sünden reinzuwaschen“. Historisch korrekter ausgedrückt glaubte Karl der Große allerdings, dass die heißen Quellen eine therapeutische Wirkung hatten.

Im Mittelalter und der frühen Neuzeit blieben die Thermalbäder weiterhin in Gebrauch, allerdings änderte sich im Laufe der Zeit die Badekultur. Im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert erlebte Aachen noch einmal eine Blütezeit als Kurstadt. Diese hielt jedoch nicht lange an, da viele der historischen Badehäuser während des Ersten und Zweiten Weltkriegs stark beschädigt wurden. This might feel a bit sad, but actually, until today the thermal springs still exist, and feed modern spa facilities like the Carolus Thermen, I wish we had the time to go and chill there ngl. Fun fact very close to this wall there is a Bar called Domkeller wich our Beerguy knows very well, you all know who I'm talking about.

Das klingt vielleicht etwas traurig, aber tatsächlich existieren die Thermalquellen bis heute und speisen moderne Badeanlagen wie die Carolus Thermen. Ich wünschte, wir hätten die Zeit gehabt, um dort ein bisschen zu entspannen. Fun Fact: Ganz in der Nähe dieser Wand gibt es eine Bar namens Domkeller, die unser Bierexperte seht gut kennt, ihr wisst alle von wem ich spreche.

Fun Fact Nummer zwei: Als ich in der Innenstadt etwas über die Geschichte Aachens gelesen habe, bin ich auf die geniale römische Fußboden- und Wandheizung gestoßen. Ich weiß nicht warum, aber das hat mich echt überrascht auf die Idee wäre ich niemals gekommen, dass sie damals schon so etwas gebaut haben. Schon wieder was gelernt juhu!

Fun fact number two, while reading about the history of Aachen in the city centre I came across the genius Roman floor and wall heating, I don't know why but that did struck me, as it never even came to my mind that they would even do that, we live and we learn I guess.

Why we will never forget Aachen

There is one very significant thing that I haven't mentioned yet, and it's the Aachen Cathedral ("Kaiserdom Aachen"). It dates back to the 8th century and was one of the most important churches in Europe. It started off as the Palatine Chapel built under the order of Charlemagne, it was the central part of Charlemagne's palace and remains the heart of the cathedral.

Es gibt noch was ganz besonderes was ich bisher nicht erwähnt habe, nämlich den Aachener Dom („Kaiserdom Aachen“). Er stammt bereits aus dem 8. Jahrhundert und gehörte zu den bedeutendsten Kirchen Europas. Ursprünglich wurde er als Pfalzkapelle auf Befehl Karls des Großen errichtet. Sie bildete damals den Mittelpunkt seines Palastes und ist bis heute das Herzstück des Doms geblieben.

Now to why we will never forget Aachen. There is this famous legend about the Aachen Cathedral.

The citizens of Aachen were financially struggling to construct the great cathedral, they became desperate and made a deal with the Devil. The Devil provided the missing funds, and since the people of Aachen didn't come up with a way to repay the debt, the Devil decided he would get the first soul of the first living being to exit the finished cathedral.

The people of Aachen were smart, though, and decided to trick the Devil by using a wolf as the first soul to leave the cathedral. It took the Devil a bit to realize that the soul he captured was that of a wolf and not a human. He was angered and ran back to the cathedral. Right before entering, the door was slammed shut, and the Devil’s finger got caught in it. The finger remains in the door to this day. We were scared to touch it but we had to for the memes you know how this generation is hehe.

Nun dazu, warum wir Aachen nie vergessen werden. Es gibt diese berühmte Legende über den Aachener Dom:

Die Einwohner Aachens hatten Schwierigkeiten, genug Geld für den Bau des prächtigen Doms aufzubringen. In ihrer Verzweiflung schlossen sie deshalb einen Pakt mit dem Teufel. Der Teufel stellte die fehlenden Mittel bereit, aber da die Bürger Aachens keine Möglichkeit hatten, ihre Schulden zu begleichen, verlangte er im Gegenzug die Seele des ersten Lebewesens, das den fertigen Dom verlassen würde.

Die Aachener waren jedoch schlau und beschlossen, den Teufel auszutricksen, indem sie als erstes Lebewesen einen Wolf aus dem Dom hinausschickten. Der Teufel brauchte einen Moment, bis er bemerkte, dass die Seele, die er gefangen hatte, nicht die eines Menschen, sondern eines Wolfs war. Voller Wut rannte er zurück zum Dom, doch kurz bevor er hineinstürmen konnte, schlug die Tür zu und der Finger des Teufels blieb in ihr stecken. Noch heute befindet sich der Finger in dieser Tür. Wir hatten ein bisschen Angst, ihn anzufassen, aber für die Memes mussten wir es natürlich trotzdem machen, ihr wisst ja, wie unsere Generation so ist, hehe.

Tell me a trip where you didn't spend time contemplating about life while staring at a painting

Here is something that I thought looked trippy but after a bit of research I discovered that it is commonly referred to as the “Eye of Providence,” a Christian symbol featuring an eye within a triangle surrounded by golden rays. The triangle represents the Holy Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit), while the eye signifies God’s all-seeing, all-knowing nature, and the radiating beams stand for His divine glory.

Hier etwas, das ich ziemlich trippy fand, aber nach ein bisschen Recherche habe ich herausgefunden, dass es allgemein als „Auge der Vorsehung“ bezeichnet wird. Es ist ein christliches Symbol, bei dem ein Auge innerhalb eines Dreiecks dargestellt ist, umgeben von goldenen Strahlen. Das Dreieck symbolisiert die heilige Dreifaltigkeit (den Vater, den Sohn und den Heiligen Geist), während das Auge für Gottes allsehende und allwissende Natur steht. Die strahlenden Lichtbündel drumherum stehen für seine göttliche Herrlichkeit.

This pic was taken behind glass doors, there was an organ rehearsal going on. I really wanted to get closer to these gorgeous blue windows, but I probably would not have captured the combination of the blue windows and the reflection of the interior of the chur.

Dieses Bild wurde durch eine Glastür hindurch aufgenommen, weil gerade eine Orgelprobe stattfand. Ich wäre wirklich gerne näher an diese wunderschönen blauen Fenster herangekommen, aber wahrscheinlich hätte ich dann nicht diese Kombination aus den blauen Fenstern und der Spiegelung des Kircheninneren einfangen können.

The next stop after the church was...well....we've spent at least an hour in the church and at this point, we've already walked 2 km...so we were hungry for a snack! On the bucket list, we had the Aachner gingerbread (Printen, or also called Lebkuchen) soon then we expected a little store to appear in front of us! In this store we could try all the gingerbread, the cashier was so sweet I would even go as far as to say she was as sweet as the gingerbread hahaha, ok too far.

Anyway if you are in Aachen and you are looking for "THE BEST" gingerbread store this one is right next to the church, happy hunting! Oh and please bring me some, they are delicious!

Als Nächstes hatten wir auf unserer Liste, unbedingt den Aachener Lebkuchen (Printen) zu probieren. Schneller als erwartet tauchte dann plötzlich ein kleiner Laden direkt vor uns auf! In diesem Laden konnten wir tatsächlich all die verschiedenen Sorten probieren, und die Kassiererin war unglaublich freundlich, ich würde sogar sagen, sie war genauso süß wie die Printen selbst, hahaha.

Wie auch immer, falls ihr mal in Aachen seid und nach „DEM“ Lebkuchen sucht, schaut unbedingt bei diesem Laden vorbei!

Ohh a proof of pin has been planted....however, I was told that was not a good location as it will probably be removed :( Ohh well, that's the fate I have to accept for my sticker!

Behind us in the picture, you can see the Townhall (Rathaus), which stands on the historic site of Charlemagne’s palace and was built in the 14th century. Over the centuries, it served not only as the city’s administrative centre but also as the location of elaborate feasts for Holy Roman Emperors crowned in Aachen.

Hinter uns seht ihr das Rathaus, das an der historischen Stelle der Kaiserpfalz von Karl dem Großen steht und im 14. Jahrhundert erbaut wurde. Über die Jahrhunderte diente es nicht nur als Verwaltungszentrum der Stadt, sondern war auch der Schauplatz großer Festessen für die in Aachen gekrönten Kaiser des Heiligen Römischen Reiches.

These things are placed all over the Aachen city, and I think that's really cool. On one side they have the history written for you to read and on the other, you can look through a little window to look at a screen and it will visually take you through the history. I wish all of them worked :(

Diese Pfähle findet man überall in Aachen, und ich finde das echt cool gemacht. Auf der einen Seite kann man etwas über die Geschichte nachlesen, und auf der anderen Seite gibt es ein kleines Fenster, durch das man auf einen Bildschirm schaut, der einen visuell durch die Geschichte führt. Ich wünschte nur, sie würden alle funktionieren! :(

Eventually we made it to the smelly part of the city, here the thermal spring has been diverted to pump out of two faucets right in the middle of the city. The water is naturally 57 degrees, so a bit of steam was visible, which made me want to visit a thermal spring and just relax for a while...maybe next time.

Not long after we were hungry, so we headed to Pontroad (Pontstraße), a street known for cheap food that it provides for the 60 thousand students that live in the city. Yes, we decided to satisfy our cravings and get Asian food and not German food HAHAHAHA we are villains aren't we.

Schließlich kamen wir in den etwas stinkenden Teil der Stadt. Hier wurde die Thermalquelle umgeleitet, sodass das Wasser direkt aus zwei Wasserhähnen mitten in der Stadt sprudelt. Es hat eine natürliche Temperatur von etwa 57 Grad, weshalb man sogar den Dampf sehen konnte. Dadurch bekam ich sofort Lust, auch mal in einer Therme zu entspannen, naja vielleicht beim nächsten Mal!

Danach führte uns unser Weg zur Pontstraße, die bekannt ist für günstiges Essen, das besonders bei Studenten beliebt ist. Natürlich entschieden wir uns hier nicht etwa für deutsches Essen, sondern für asiatisches Essen, um unseren Heißhunger zu stillen. HAHAHAHA, wir sind schon richtige Böse, oder?

There is a huge hospital in Aachen that people say looks like a spaceship. It’s called the University Hospital RWTH Aachen, and it was built in the 1970s. The building is massive because it brings all its medical departments together under one roof, and locals call it the “moving hospital” because it's actually moving the reason to why it looks like a spaceship is because the elevator, ventilation and pipes have all been installed after the construction was partially complete, the building was never fully built because mid-way through they realized they made a crucial mistake which makes the building slide down the hill.

In Aachen steht ein riesiges Krankenhaus, das wie ein Raumschiff aussieht. Es heißt Universitätsklinikum RWTH Aachen und wurde in den 1970er Jahren gebaut. Der Grund dafür, dass es wie ein Raumschiff aussieht, liegt darin, dass Aufzüge, Lüftungen und Rohrleitungen erst nachträglich außen angebracht wurden, nachdem das Gebäude schon teilweise fertiggestellt war. Tatsächlich nennen es einige auch das „rutschende Krankenhaus“, denn während des Baus stellte man fest, dass schwerwiegende Fehler gemacht wurden, wodurch das Gebäude langsam den Hang hinunterrutscht und deshalb wurde der Bau nie vollständig abgeschlossen.

Another fun fact for you all: in Aachen, there used to be a needle production industry, and the pinky finger was used to sort the needles. That’s why using your pinky is considered a way to say hello in Aachen.

Noch ein Fun Fact für euch: In Aachen gab es früher eine bedeutende Nadelfabrikation, und um die Nadeln zu sortieren, wurde traditionell der kleine Finger benutzt. Genau deshalb könnt ihr in Aachen jemanden grüßen, indem ihr einfach euren kleinen Finger hebt!

We finished our day by @detlev our local guide taking us out to try the Belgian fries also known as “frites”, they are traditionally double-fried and taste WAY BETTER than normal fries! Special thanks goes out to you Detlev we loved the city and we will always remember it.

And just like that, tired after exploring the beautiful city Aachen we hopped on the Bus at 1am and headed for Paris, stay tuned for that Post, and I hope you enjoyed this one!

Wir haben unseren Tag damit beendet, dass uns unser lieber Detlev noch zu richtig leckeren belgischen Pommes eingeladen hat. Diese Pommes sind besonders, weil sie traditionell zweimal frittiert werden und deshalb extra knusprig und lecker sind. Danke Detlev nicht nur für das Pommes sondern für die wunderschöne Zeit in Aachen!
