Today we visited a regional town, the old Gold rush town of Ballarat which was once home to some of the richest people on the planet who found their worth of weight in gold.
My wife and I took the family out to Lake Wendouree which is a man made artificial lake created from swampland that once covered this area. Today it is the life blood of the town providing much recreation activity as well as business opportunities.
The story goes that when English settlers approached a group of Aboriginal women along the shore to ask the name of the location the women shouted Wendouree! Wendouree! What the English thought was the name of the location was actually the women telling them to go away.
150 years ago the wetlands were dredged and bluestone was laid along it to retain water and provide easy access into the shallow lake.
In 1864 a rowing channel was carved into the lake and Ballarat's first rowing team was established as well as a rowing school to teach locals about rowing in an attempt to increase recreational activities for the community.
1869 saw the first steam boats on the lake providing further recreational activities and some of which have been fully restored and still operational today.
Locals can enjoy a glass of wine while cruising along a steam boat on the lake while being guided by a tour guide. You can also book a party boat and party the night away in celebration of new years, birthdays or any occasion that suits your needs.
The lake is a popular angling location for local and visiting fisher men and regularly stocked with Red fin, trout and home to other varieties of fish perfect for the nights dinner.
Lake Wendouree is also home to a popular yacht club where sailors can practice their skills on calm water with open breeze and their own location. Summer weekends are often a buzz with local sailors who race across the lake and amongst themselves.
Kayaking is also a popular pass time on the Lake with also paddle boards around which you can also use standing. I have been wanting to try one for ages they look like so much fun!
The Lake is also home to a range of species of Australian native birds which feed off the reeds and fish.
With popular walking tracks, coffee shops and 1800s architecture the city of Ballarat is a wonderful location to visit with a frozen in time feel with a blend of modernisation. It truly is a wonderful Australian town.
It's also home to Sovereign Hill which is an amusement park consisting of 1800s era gold rush saloons, bars and activities that the whole family will enjoy and you can try your hand at panning for gold.
