Today's post we travel to the wonderful north east of Victoria about an hours drive from Melbourne to the Macedon region.

We explore a lake that was named Sanatoriun Lake which has a bit of meaning and relatable some what to our current situation.

Sanatorium Lake was constructed to supply water to a tuberculosis sanatorium built nearby in 1899 but later destroyed by fire.

In the early 20th century Turberculosis was a major killer of Aussies. TB as it's known is a viral infection of the lungs which left unchecked can cause death.

In 1925 a Royal Commission into Health recommended that the Commonwealth Department of Health should formulate a plan for a campaign against the spread of TB.

It was believed that colder high altitude climates impacted the virus' ability to spread so hospitals were built amongst rainforest's in mountaintops.

Fortunately in 1945 Dr Nancy Atkinson, a bacteriologist at the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science in produced the first Australian made Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine against TB.

The vaccine was distributed across the nation and now Australia has one of the lowest cases of TB in the world.

Now all that is left of this history is a purpose built Lake in the middle of a rainforest.

Great place to go for a walk especially in the winter months when rainfall is recent. The land is a beautiful lush green.
