Hello dear Pinmapples and travel lovers,
when I go on vacation, I usually try to make sure that it is balanced. Not only in the individual vacation but also in the course of the year. This means that I make sure to plan longer summer vacations with beach and sea, but also city trips or wellness trips.
In my last post I told you about my first ski vacation. One or the other may have wondered why I talked about a longer vacation, but the ski vacation was only 6 days long. To extend the vacation a bit, we combined our trip to Ischgl last year with a visit to Strasbourg. This was not directly on the way, but it shortened the journey to Strasbourg for us and we could combine several activities.
Today I would like to tell you about our short trip to Strasbourg. Have fun reading.
The Christmas Capital
Strasbourg is also known as the Christmas capital. So why not experience the city right at its best and spend a few days on site in December. Strasbourg owes its designation as the Christmas capital mainly to its Christmas market and the really lovingly decorated streets. You can see that the people of Strasbourg are very keen to live up to their slogan. From huge Christmas tree, to various Christmas markets and whole decorated streets and houses is really everything here.

With all the beautiful decorations in the city center, but one thing should not be ignored: The city is especially crowded at Christmas time. If you're planning to visit Strasbourg at Christmas, make sure your visit doesn't fall on a weekend. Out of our 4 days there, 3 days were on the weekend and the city was really extremely crowded. So much so that strolling through the Christmas market could not really unfold its enchanting effect, neither during the day nor in the evening.
Getting to the Christmas market was also a challenge due to the sheer crowds. Our hotel was about 10-15 minutes by car from the city center. Used we by traffic jams and crowded parking garages mostly unfortunately rather 30-60 minutes. I would definitely recommend a more central hotel or one with good public transportation.
What makes Strasbourg special?
Besides its reputation as the Christmas capital, Strasbourg is certainly special in that it is located directly on the border with Germany. France and Germany are separated here only by the Rhine as a natural border. This becomes particularly clear when you cross one of the bridges that connect the two countries. We parked for this at the bridge of the two banks and took a walk from France to Germany and back again. The bridge is really beautiful and a walk along the banks is also worthwhile. You can find one or the other cute café in which you can warm up well on a wintry day.
In addition, Strasbourg is crisscrossed by a lot of water, which offers especially in spring and summer certainly nice places to sit.
What to see in Strasbourg?
To escape the crowded city center we went a little out besides the Christmas market and the classic sights in the city center. For this we went to the Parc de l'Orangerie and treated ourselves to some time out in the snow flurries. The park is very beautifully landscaped and invites you to take a walk. In addition, there is directly in the park still a restaurant and the European Parliament is within walking distance.
Directly in the city center you will find the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, the Kléberplatz (where you can also find the big Christmas tree) and the Palais Rohan. In addition, it is worth a walk through the district La Petite France in the many beautiful small half-timbered houses, for which Strasbourg is very famous.
Conclusion
Strasbourg is a beautiful city. Unfortunately, it could not enchant me as other places in the world have done. This was mainly due to the crowds of people, the crowding in the city center and the many traffic jams. As a result, one could not enjoy many things as desired or even reach certain places properly.
If I travel to Strasbourg again, I will definitely visit the city between April and September. I think that strolling through the small streets and along the river banks has a completely different effect then.
If you would like to visit Strasbourg at Christmas time, then definitely heed my tip above to schedule your visit on weekdays.
Strasbourg is definitely worth a visit and I have yet to see a city decorated with so much attention to detail at Christmas time. Here, the name Christmas capital really says it all. Certainly a nice experience for all Christmas fans among you.

Hallo liebe Pinmapples und Reiseliebhaber,
bei meinen Urlauben versuche ich meistens darauf zu achten, diese ausgewogen zu gestalten. Nicht nur im einzelnen Urlaub sondern auch im Jahresverlauf. Das bedeutet, dass ich darauf achte neben längeren Sommerurlauben mit Strand und Meer, auch Städtereisen oder Wellnesstrips einzuplanen.
In meinem letzten Post habe ich Euch von meinem ersten Skiurlaub berichtet. Der ein oder andere hat sich vielleicht schon gewundert, warum ich von einem längeren Urlaub gesprochen habe, der Skiurlaub allerdings nur 6 Tage lang war. Um den Urlaub ein bisschen zu verlängern, haben wir unseren Trip nach Ischgl im letzten Jahr mit einem Besuch in Strasbourg verbunden. Das lag zwar nicht direkt auf dem Weg, hat jedoch die Anreise nach Strasbourg für uns deutlich verkürzt und wir konnten gleich mehrere Aktivitäten miteinander kombinieren.
Heute möchte ich Euch über unseren Kurztrip nach Strasbourg berichten. Viel Spaß beim Lesen.
Die Weihnachtshauptstadt
Strasbourg ist auch als Weihnachtshauptstadt bekannt. Warum die Stadt also nicht direkt zu ihrer besten Zeit erleben und im Dezember ein paar Tage vor Ort verbringen. Die Bezeichnung als Weihnachtshauptstadt verdankt Strasbourg vor Allem seinem Weihnachtsmarkt und den wirklich liebevoll geschmückten Straßen. Man merkt, dass die Strasburger viel Wert darauf legen Ihrem Slogan alle Ehre zu machen. Von riesigem Weihnachtsbaum, über verschiedenste Weihnachtsmärkte und ganze geschmückte Straßenzüge und Häuser ist hier wirklich alles dabei.
Bei all der schönen Dekoration in der Innenstadt sollte man aber eins nicht außer Acht lassen: Die Stadt ist zur Weihnachtszeit besonders voll. Solltet ihr planen das weihnachtliche Strasbourg zu besuchen, achtet unbedingt darauf, dass euer Besuch nicht auf ein Wochenende fällt. Von unseren 4 Tagen vor Ort, lagen 3 Tage am Wochenende und die Stadt war wirklich extrem überlaufen. So sehr, dass das schlendern über den Weihnachtsmarkt weder tagsüber noch abends seine verzaubernde Wirkung so richtig entfalten konnte.
Auch der Weg zum Weihnachtsmarkt war durch die schieren Menschenmassen eine Herausforderung. Unser Hotel lag ca. 10-15 Autominuten von der Innenstadt entfernt. Gebraucht haben wir durch Stau und überfüllte Parkhäuser meist leider eher 30-60 Minuten. Hier würde ich Euch auf jeden Fall ein zentraleres Hotel oder eins mit guter Anbindung an öffentliche Verkehrsmittel empfehlen.
Was macht Strasbourg besonders?
Neben dem Ruf als Weihnachtshauptstadt ist sicherlich eine Besonderheit, dass Strasbourg direkt an der Grenze zu Deutschland liegt. Frankreich und Deutschland werden hier nur durch den Rhein als natürliche Grenze getrennt. Dies wird einem besonders bewusst, wenn man über eine der Brücken geht, welche die beiden Länder miteinander verbindet. Wir haben hierfür an der Brücke der zwei Ufer geparkt und einen Spaziergang von Frankreich nach Deutschland und wieder zurück unternommen. Die Brücke ist wirklich schön und auch ein Spaziergang an den Ufern entlang lohnt sich. Man findet hier das ein oder andere süße Café in dem man sich an einem winterlichen Tag gut wieder aufwärmen kann.
Außerdem ist Strasbourg von sehr viel Wasser durchzogen, was besonders im Frühjahr und Sommer bestimmt schöne Sitzgelegenheiten bietet.
Was kann man sich in Strasbourg anschauen?
Um der vollen Innenstadt zu entfliehen haben wir uns neben dem Weihnachtsmarkt und den klassischen Sehenswürdigkeiten im Stadtzentrum ein wenig raus begeben. Hierfür sind wir in den Parc de l'Orangerie gefahren und haben uns dort eine Auszeit im Schneegestöber gegönnt. Der Park ist sehr schön angelegt und lädt zu einem Spaziergang ein. Außerdem gibt es direkt im Park noch ein Restaurant und das Europäische Parlament befindet sich fußläufig entfernt.
Direkt in der Innenstadt findet ihr die Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, den Kléberplatz (auf dem auch der große Weihnachtsbaum steht) und den Palais Rohan. Außerdem lohnt sich ein Spaziergang durch den Stadtteil La Petite France in dem viele schöne kleine Fachwerkhäuser stehen, für die Strasbourg sehr bekannt ist.
Fazit
Strasbourg ist eine schöne Stadt. Leider konnte sie mich nicht so verzaubern, wie es bereits andere Orte auf dieser Welt getan haben. Dies lag vor Allem an den Menschenmassen, dem Gedränge in der Innenstadt und dem vielen Stau. Dadurch konnte man vieles nicht wie gewünscht genießen oder bestimmte Orte gar nicht richtig erreichen.
Wenn ich nochmal nach Strasbourg reisen sollte, werde ich mir die Stadt auf jeden Fall zwischen April und September anschauen. Ich glaube, dass das schlendern durch die kleinen Gassen und an den Flussufern entlang, dann nochmal eine ganz andere Wirkung hat.
Solltet ihr euch Strasbourg gerne zur Weihnachtszeit anschauen wollen, dann beherzigt auf jeden Fall meinen oben genannten Tipp euren Besuch auf die Wochentage zu legen.
Strasbourg ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert und ich habe bisher keine Stadt erlebt, die zur Weihnachtszeit mit so viel Liebe zum Details geschmückt wurde. Hier ist der Name Weihnachtshauptstadt wirklich Programm. Sicherlich ein schönes Erlebnis für alle Weihnachtsfans unter Euch.
