The Farm at Glanz, Carinthia (Kärnten, Austria)

Howdy!

About 2 months ago, we booked an apartment for 4 days for mid-June in a farm that is situated 900 meters up on the mountain in Carinthia, Austria. I wanted to see the sheep and the Lamas in that farm. So the working farm is located in Glanz that is next to the Millstätter Lake.

We drove 400 kilometers from Vienna via the countryside since I wanted to see the landscapes along the way. It was a long way indeed passing the Turracher Höhe of about 1800 meters. This is a skiing area in winter and in Summer, a long hiking trail, all for the sports enthusiasts.

Millstätter Lake

The landscape of the whole area is really beautiful, all open fields taken care of by each of the farmers.

The owner of our apartment has a small cabin at the lake, and boats were there to be used as part of our booking. We wanted to do a Kanu ride and all we needed was to go downhill by foot to reach the cabin. But it rained the night before we arrived and therefore the way was very slippery. Oh, too risky for us senior citizens if we fell down and broke our legs, lol!

When we booked the apartment 2 months before, we were going in mid June which was already the start of Summer season, so weather wise, it should have been hot and that we should have nice weather. But then, the weather turned bad for us, coz the weather was projected to be rainy the whole of the week.

I was a bit dismayed since I wanted to ride the cable car going up to the highest peak near Turracher Höhe ( Skiing Area). It rained and rained and so we could not do anything but simply saw the surroundings of the farm.

Sheeps and the Lamas...

The farmers here have a smart idea to construct enclosed yards in the prairie next to each other. On some days, when the sheeps are done with the "mowing" at one enclosure, the sheep are moved the next day to another enclosed yard and so on and so fort. So the farmers do not have the task to do the mowing themselves.

I haven't seen a Lama in real life... We only saw a pair in this farm since others were sold already to other farmers. The Lamas in the farm were shy and didn't want to come near, although I would probably stay farther away before they spit at me...hahaha. I had been warned not to stay too close because of the spitting but that was not the case.

There are so many things to see inside the forest, some beautiful wildflowers growing along the way.

The pine cones were so huge and have perfect shapes.

It was my first time seeing such alpine wildflowers. I have seen other varieties of these Sculpit blooms at the Donau-Auen National Park.

The landscape is really awesome in Glanz. Each District that has uncultivated fields are all assigned to maintain their prairie clean for purposes of tourism.

Downhill, way to the lake by foot...

It was raining cats and dogs in the two days we had been there. We had bad luck with the weather...and so we decided to go back home the following day. We want to come back again and the next time we hope that the weather will be fine...

It's a beautiful place you have been to. The green forest, the peaceful view of the lake. It's amazing how the open fields are kept ckean. Wish you good westher next time my friend. With the clinate change....who would expect rains in summer?

Oh my, they had flooding there last week. Had we decided on this date last week, we would have been stranded....luck in luck I guess. Thanks for the comments.

That's so annoying! To book a holiday in advance and for it to rain the whole week. Luckily the surroundings is so nice, giving you a different feel in the rain

Hi! Indeed, that´s the risk tourists always have if booking in advance. And to think that we have Summer now. Weather is hot around 30°C... but the chances of having bad weather is huge. Many thanks!

amazing scenery! Being able to see Lama in person is interesting. It's very bad the weather prevented you from taking the cable car. The sensation of viewing that location from above will be great.

Yes, it´s a pity we were out of the scheduled fun... but we will go back sometime. Thanks for being here.

Wow! What a beautiful place. Sorry you were dismayed with not supportive weather. You are still lucky you meet the Lamas. The wild flowers were awesome.

Thank you @jurich60. Hahaha.... careful gyud not to be near, they didn´t come when I called them,,,they were shy or afraid of me as a stranger.

I love this view, it is so relaxing.

It is still a great experience even if it rains cats and dogs, look at the llamas welcoming you as their guest, lol!
