Hello dear Hivers!

Today, I´ll be sharing with you about the market that is famous for its delicacies in the city. Literally, Naschmarkt means Nasch = Snack + Markt = Market. You must have heard about it in Vienna if you have visited the city before and if not and you are planning to come and make a tour, do not forget to pass-by this historical market.

The bird's eye view of the market

The area is a prestigious location where beautifully designed old buildings were built by the famous architects of the country, particularly Otto Wagner. Located in the 6th District of Vienna, to the right of the above image, is the Linke Wienzeile road and to the left is the Rechte Wienzeile. Most of the buildings are leased out to companies, shops and private apartments.

When I changed my job in 2008, the office of the company I worked for was located directly at or opposite of the Naschmarkt.

Above, the photo shows the structure of the Naschmarkt. The 2nd white building(on the right) was my former office, top most part with round windows.

The existence of the market dates back to around the last quarter of the 18th Century where it had been moved from the city center and where it evolved and expanded to the present location. The presumption of the historians of the City of Vienna was that the name originated from what the Viennese called Aschenmarkt... the area which had been a place where they dumped ashes and trash.

What the City of Vienna Administrators had to say about History of the name Naschmarkt.

There are two possible explanations for the term "Aschenmarkt": the market's precursor was a fruit and vegetables market at Freyung in the city center. Because of constant disputes between the City Administration and the Schottenkloster (the Monastery of the Scottish Friars), it was moved in 1780 to the fürstlich Starhembergische Freyhaus (a house belonging to the counts of Starhemberg, torn down in 1936, today the area of Hauptstraße-Resselgasse-Operngasse). Earlier a small milk market had been established at the location of a former city landfill for ash and waste. This could be the reason why the Viennese called their new market "Aschenmarkt". At the same time, however, "Asch" was also a common name for milk buckets made of ash trees. Already at the beginning of the 19th century, the name "Naschmarkt" became more and more common.

From Monday to Saturday, the market is open from 6:00 to 21:00. On Saturdays, the parking lot becomes a flea market. The flower shops are even open on special occasions (Sunday) in events such as Mother´s Day, Valentine´s Day, Easter, etc.

Food Mile of the Viennese

It is very convenient for the locals, tourists and employees to dine here... there are bistros, bars, steakhouse, coffeeshops, teahouses, patisseries/bake shops available. The market can be reached through the Metro underground train station called Kettenbrücken Station.

After hours of strolling at the fresh market, one could always relax, sip a cup of latte and have a taste of the Apfelstrudel or you can sit a while and drink your beer or a glass of wine and watch market goers.

The market is also famous for its exotic Sweets and other delicacies particularly the dried fruits, nuts and berries...mostly produced from the east. Turkey is famous for their Baklava and I also saw that dried Hibiscus flowers are available. I never heard of such preserved sweets before but only saw it during this visit. It's a matter of getting used to it.

Oriental Flair

The market has an oriental flair and this can be observed by the stallholder´s products being displayed and sold. Naschmarkt is known for Arabic dishes as well.

Falafels are fresly cooked on the spot. The ones below are so delish and you can even taste them before you buy them. So I bought a bunch to bring home.

This was also on my to do-list, to make a post about the Naschmarkt :)

Yeah, just do it! I know you can make it better! Thanks for visiting and for the curation! Schönes Wochenende!

No, I can tick that off.
I tried to make some first pics some weeks ago, but it is very difficult to avoid bystanders, but on the other hand to share the atmosphere of the place. I was not satisfied with the pics, so I postponed that project.

You are a real Pro in Photography and I love your pics. But unless you want to do it for a magazine, that is a very difficult job to avoid people. Take a pic at lunch time when everyone is sitting in the Bistros or steakstand..... this might add a wonder for the readers as they will see the commotions as to why it is a food mile for the locals and tourists alike.

Welcome to marketfriday. A beautiful place!

It is indeed a beautiful place worth visiting. Thanks.

Thanks for the beer token.

The dried sweet hibiscus flowers and the ceramics caught my eyes. Did you tasted the dried sweet hibiscus flowers? @mers ho did they peserved it kaya?

The ceramics are lovely, arent they? No, I have not tried the dried Hibiscus flowers. The sellers described it as sweet and I guess they´ve added in aroma of some kind. I was eating a coconut baklava just to try that´s why I didn´t taste the dried Hibiscus. The coconut variety were not as delish as the original one with the pistacchio.

That's a large area of a market and a lot of varied goods. I didn't know that hibiscus can be eaten until this post, interesting!

Yeah, very interesting..I didn't know either until I saw the label Hibiscus.. But I didn't try it because I was already eating a sweet baklava. The taste might be different if I ate another sweets.

I like how well-kept and organized that market is, you will truly enjoy exploring and shopping.

I did my shopping here almost daily when my workplace was just opposite this market..it was always enjoyable. Many thanks for visiting..
