A few days ago it was my birthday, and my boyfriend invited me to go up the Mukumbarí Cable Car System, in Merida, Venezuela. We had been told that it was advisable to be early in the facilities since the cable car consists of 5 stations that allow users to climb along the Sierra Nevada National Park.

The last one is the Pico Espejo station whose homonymous peak is 4765 m.a.s.l., which is the highest station of the system and, at the same time, the closest point from where you can see the Pico Bolivar and part of the imposing Andean mountain range in Venezuela.

In addition, each station has different attractions, such as restaurants and souvenir shops and cafes, even points specifically prepared for taking pictures.

Under all this context, you will now understand why it is ideal to go early. Well, it was Sunday, the morning was cold and my boyfriend and I are not very fond of early mornings. So, we ended up taking the last chance to go up, at 2 PM. For Venezuelans, the standard ticket costs $20, while $40 for foreigners.

The Mérida cable car has existed since 1960 and has gone through many changes and prolonged closures due to poor management and lack of maintenance by the State. Its deterioration was just one more piece that fell due to the Venezuelan crisis.

I currently live in Merida, and I know that the cable car is not functional all the time, however, this time I think it has left a good impression on most of its visitors.

This new system was reopened in 2016, with new and modern 5 facilities that today are the tourist epicenter of the city of Merida and the cable car happens to be an emblematic symbol of Venezuela.

Inside the cabins, the speakers explain some facts about what you can observe (fog permitting) through the windows. For example, my favorite fact: the "gray hairs" of the mountain or the colorful Yagrumos, which are tall trees typical of this area that stand out for their apparent white color. However, in reality, they are only lighter green, which contrasts with the dark green of the surrounding vegetation and it appears to be white.

At all times there are guide staff indicating instructions to avoid accidents, for example, avoid running or being too long at the last station, as the progressive lack of oxygen pressure can be harmful to some people, due to the altitude.

When my boyfriend and I arrived at the Pico Espejo station, we went out to see the iconic Virgen de las Nieves which they say is the guide and protector of Andean mountaineers, and we were freezing cold.

Aside from being a tourist attraction, the cable car can be a perfect place to reflect if you are someone like me, and if you get a place that is not so crowded. For example: during the whole tour, it was inevitable to think about emotions and adulthood.

IMG_20231217_160348.jpg

I remembered the 19-year-old girl who moved to Merida to study Medicine and one day went up the cable car alone just because she wanted to. I realized, again, that I don't feel like that anymore. At 19, everything was new, splendorous, and magical. Today I don't feel or perceive anything in the same way, and I felt a little sad about it.

I think, sometimes, if I have lost my essence.

IMG_20231217_144952.jpg

However, I have slowly understood that it is a natural process, part of maturity. Emotions are not static, they grow and transform with you. And that doesn't make them bad, good, worse or better. They are just emotions, and they deserve a place.

IMG_20231217_143122.jpg

They are just part of another stage or process you are living. I guess you'll understand what I mean.

I thought that in such a beautiful and crowded place you are supposed to be anything but sad. However, that beautiful day, the mountains of the Andean moor gave me the perfect space to cry a little bit about it. And I couldn't have asked for a better company to do it in.

IMG_20231217_150635.jpg

Supongo entenderás a qué me refiero.

IMG_20231217_153155.jpg
