Las Heroínas Square is an iconic place in the city of Mérida; it's where all tourists (and locals) always go. For me, this square has a story etched in my heart; it's not just any place.
Ever since I was a child, my mother would always bring us to Mérida for vacations, and a place we never missed was this square. I have many memories here, on these very stairs and grounds, from when I was very little. It may sound cheesy, but I feel like this square has watched me grow up in some way, even though I'm not from Mérida.
As a little girl, I remember loving to slide down the "cement slides" of the square with my brother. These are the simple "edges" of the stairs that were adopted as slides by the children (and honestly, I still find it incredibly fun, even as an adult). I doubt they were built for this purpose, but that's how they are today, and you always see someone sliding down them.
Now, why is it called "Las Heroínas"? Who are these heroines? Well, they are Anastasia, María Simona, María Isabel, María del Rosario, and María Ignacia. They are five women from Mérida who accompanied and fought for Venezuela's independence, and they are commemorated in this square.
Although, to tell the truth, the monument in their honor is a bit deteriorated today, and the need for maintenance is evident. I'm sure that this whole place is not what it used to be.
When I moved to Mérida at 19, alone, I initially tried to always go to Las Heroínas just to wander around out of nostalgia. Besides, it's an objectively cute place.
There's a lot to see and do here, and for all tastes: in its surroundings, you'll find various gastronomic offerings, such as restaurants for family outings, places to have a drink with friends, cafes, pizzerias, ice cream shops, traditional Mérida food stalls, and even a tea house where cultural events are held.
Being such a touristy place, you'll obviously find all kinds of hotels and inns, I would say for all budgets.
And in Las Heroínas, there's not only places to eat or stay, but also various recreational activities: the main one, of course, is the Mukumbarí cable car, a place where a lot of things are offered, including restaurants and more exciting activities like rappelling.
In the square, especially during the afternoons and evenings of the weekends, people come to sell toys for children, rent bicycles for them too, enable the climbing wall of the square, and some street vendors offer you an endless array of toys, gadgets, handmade jewelry, and of course, cold-weather clothing like hats, gloves, and jackets.
Sometimes there are also cultural events, such as dances and fairs.
Having lived in Mérida for 6 years now, I would say that among all places, Las Heroínas Square is a place that always "holds up"; that is, at least in recent years, it has always been a welcoming place where it's nice to be, relatively clean and organized, and everything is always in motion. Perhaps because it's a symbol of tourism in the city, the locals feel appreciation and respect for this place.
In summary, it's a quite lively place. You might know it even if you're not from Mérida.
For me, it's a place with a beautiful, warm, family-friendly, fun, and even romantic energy. Las Heroínas has various faces and nuances, and at least for me, I never tire —and hope never to tire— of any of them.

La plaza Las Heroínas es un lugar emblemático de la ciudad de Mérida, es a donde todos los turistas (y locales) siempre van. Para mí esta plaza tiene una historia trazada en mi corazón, no es un lugar cualquiera.
Desde que era niña, mi mamá siempre nos traía a Mérida de vacaciones, y un lugar que jamás faltaba era esta plaza. Tengo muchos recuerdos aquí, en estas mismas escaleras y suelos, desde que era muy chiquita. Sonará cursi pero siento que esta plaza me ha visto crecer de alguna forma, y eso que yo no soy de Mérida.
De chiquita, recuerdo que amaba lanzarme por "los toboganes de cemento" de la plaza junto a mi hermano. Estos son los simples "bordes" de las escaleras que fueron adoptados como toboganes por los niños (y la verdad me sigue pareciendo divertidísimo, incluso de adulta). Dudo que hayan sido construidos así para este motivo, pero así son hoy en día, y siempre ves a alguien lanzándose por ahí.
Ahora bien: ¿por qué se llama "Las Heroínas"? ¿quiénes son esas heroínas? pues se trata de Anastasia, María Simona, María Isabel, María del Rosario y María Ignacia. Son 5 mujeres merideñas que acompañaron y lucharon por la independencia de Venezuela, por lo que se les conmemora en esta plaza.
Aunque, a decir verdad, el monumento en su honor está un poco deteriorado a día de hoy, y es evidente el mantenimiento que necesita. La plaza en general, a pesar de que se mantiene en comparación a otros lugares de la ciudad, estoy segura de que no es hoy en día lo que era antes.
Cuando a mis 19 años me mudé a Mérida, sola, los primeros tiempos intentaba ir siempre a Las Heroínas solo para merodear por ahí por nostalgia. Además, es un lugar objetivamente bonito.
Aquí hay mucho por ver y hacer, y para todos los gustos: en sus alrededores encuentras varias ofertas gastronómicas, como restaurantes para ir con la familia, locales para beber algo con amigos, cafés, pizzerías, heladerías, locales de comida tradicional merideña y hasta una casa de té donde hacen eventos culturales.
Al ser un lugar tan turístico, evidentemente conseguirás toda clase de hoteles y posadas, yo diría que para todos los presupuestos.
Y en Las Heroínas no solo hay sitios para comer u hospedarse, sino varias actividades recreativas también: la principal, por supuesto, es el teleférico Mukumbarí, lugar donde además se ofrecen un montón de cosas, entre restaurantes y actividades más emocionantes como rapel.
En la plaza, durante las tardes y noches de, sobre todo, los fines de semana, se acerca gente a vender juguetes para niños, a alquilar bicicletas para ellos también, habilitan la pared de escalada de la plaza, y algunos vendedores ambulantes te ofrecen un sinfín de juguetes, artilugios, joyería artesanal y, por supuesto, ropa para el frío como gorros, guantes y chaquetas.
A veces hay eventos culturales también, como danzas y ferias.
Habiendo vivido 6 años hasta ahora en Mérida, yo diría que de entre todos los lugares, la plaza Las Heroínas es un lugar que siempre se "mantiene"; es decir, al menos en los últimos años, siempre ha sido un lugar acogedor donde es agradable estar, relativamente limpio y organizado, y todo siempre en movimiento. Quizá por ser un emblema de turismo en la ciudad, los locales sienten aprecio y respeto por este lugar.
En resumen, es un lugar bastante movido. Puede que lo conozcas aunque no seas merideño.
Para mí, es un lugar con una energía y calor bonito, familiar, de diversión y hasta romántico. Las Heroínas tiene varios rostros y matices, y al menos yo, no me canso -y espero no cansarme- de ninguno.
