When you go to Margarita Island, a visit to the Virgen del Valle or La Vallita, as it is called there, is a must-do. If you don't do it, you aren't in Margarita.
This was the first time I was making this visit, so everything for me was new.
During our stay in Margarita, I had heard several times about visiting the beautiful Virgen del Valle in her sanctuary: a place full of color, peace and sun. That it was quite an experience, I was told.
I am not particularly a religious person. Here in Venezuela, many virgins are worshipped and I have never been part of something like that, and honestly, I am not one of those people who can identify which virgin is which by the characteristics of the sculptures and images.
However, my visit to the small and blue church of the Virgen del Valle was totally special... And different.
As soon as you arrive at the site, you notice that everything is surrounded by small craft stalls, and the artisans and different vendors offer you a myriad of beautiful things that come out of their hands. Of course, each little thing you see is more special than the last.
We unfortunately arrived during the afternoon and there were not so many artisans around.
However, something completely new to me happened:
The artisans gift you what they sell.
Yes, it sounds a bit strange. Someone skeptical might think that this "gift" comes with something else behind it. Maybe "cajoling" you to sell you other things. Or, you might think that the artisan liked you and they want to give you something as an attempt at flirting.
However, nothing could be further from those hidden intentions.
The artisans give you gifts because they are fulfilling promises with la Vallita.
I dared to ask a vendor, with caution and respect, why they gave away their work. She told me that in her particular case, she was unable to work for 2 years due to the pandemic that wiped out everything, including that kind of jobs. And now, every time a visitor comes to her stall, she gives them something like a small bracelet or necklace that she makes for you right there in a matter of seconds, because La Vallita now gives her work.
La Vallita grants them what they ask for, and they promise to give it to all their visitors.
The motifs of these offerings were similar in all the artisans' stalls I visited that day. And I thought it was such a nice chain of offerings: I give to you because the Virgin gives to me, basically.
The process to have the offerings made is:
- Many artisans offer you a lot of small stones such as quartz in tiny boxes or seashells and ask you to choose one.
- They quickly make you a small bracelet or necklace with the stone you chose.
- Some give you the Virgin's blessing, that is, they recite words like "May the Virgen del Valle always be with you, may she offer you a healthy and prosperous life" while they place the offering on you. Curious fact: if it is a bracelet, they ask you to place it on the left wrist because "it is the closest to the heart".
- You buy something at their stand and/or leave blessed by la Vallita to visit others, and the same thing is repeated.
If you don't believe in virgins, in God or anything like that, well, at least they give you a nice gift and wish you well.... how and why say no to that?
After visiting the artisans' stalls, my family and I entered the spectacular chapel of the Virgen del Valle.
As soon as you enter, everything is light and color.
The color palette is white, blue and yellow. Colors that since then, inevitably remind me of La Vallita. The place is a small chapel in which there were few people at that time, surrounded by stained glass windows with beautiful and colorful paintings, and that day everything was full of flowers.
I sat for a while with my mother to contemplate in silence the sculpture of the Virgen del Valle and to breathe that moment, and it was inevitable to feel moved, touched and grateful.
The people of Margarita are people with great devotion to the Virgen del Valle, and as a tourist it is inevitable for one to be touched by this beautiful and special spirit that they feel towards their Vallita.
In short, they were right: visiting the sanctuary of the Virgen del Valle is an experience.

Cuando vas a la isla de Margarita, la visita a la Virgen del Valle o a la Vallita, como le dicen allá, es un deber. Si no la haces, no fuiste a Margarita.
Esta fue la primera vez que yo hacía esta visita, así que todo para mí era nuevo.
Durante nuestra estancia en Margarita, había escuchado varias veces sobre visitar a la preciosa Virgen del Valle en su santuario: un lugar lleno de color, paz y sol. Que era toda una experiencia, me decían.
Yo no soy particularmente una persona religiosa, mucho menos alguien de vírgenes. Aquí en Venezuela se le rinde culto a muchas vírgenes y yo nunca he sido partícipe de algo así, y honestamente, no soy de esas personas que logra identificar cuál es cuál virgen por sus características en las esculturas e imágenes.
Sin embargo, mi visita a la pequeña y azul iglesia de la Virgen del Valle, fue totalmente especial... Y diferente.
Apenas llegas al sitio, notas que todo está rodeado de pequeños puestos de artesanías, y los artesanos y diferentes vendedores te ofrecen un sinfín de artilugios y cositas hermosas que salen de sus manos. Eso sí: cada "periquito" que ves, se te hace más especial que el anterior.
Nosotros lamentablemente llegamos durante la tarde y ya no habían tantos artesanos alrededor.
Sin embargo, sucedió algo completamente nuevo para mí:
Los artesanos te regalan lo que venden.
Sí, suena algo extraño. Alguien escéptico podría pensar que ese "regalo" viene con algo más detrás... Quizá "engatusarte" para venderte otras cosas. O, podrías pensar que le gustaste al artesano y quieren regalarte algo como en un intento de coqueteo.
Sin embargo, nada más alejado de esas intenciones ocultas.
Los artesanos te regalan porque están cumpliendo promesas con la Vallita.
Me atreví a preguntarle a una vendedora, con cautela y respeto, que por qué regalan su trabajo... Me dijo que en su caso particular, ella estuvo 2 años sin poder trabajar debido a la pandemia que arrasó con todo, incluyendo ese tipo de trabajos. Y ahora, cada vez que se acerca un visitante a su puesto, le regala algo como una pequeña pulsera o collar que te hace ahí mismo muy hábilmente y en cuestión de segundos, porque la Vallita ahora le da trabajo.
La Vallita les concede lo que piden, y ellos prometen regalar a todos sus visitantes.
Los motivos de estas ofrendas eran parecidos en todos los puestos de los artesanos que visité ese día. Y me pareció una cadena de ofrendas tan linda: yo te doy porque la Virgen me da, básicamente.
El proceso para que te hagan las ofrendas es:
• Muchos artesanos te ofrecen un montón de piedritas como cuarzos que están en cajitas o conchas de mar, y te piden que escojas una.
• Rápidamente te hacen una pequeña pulsera o collar a tu medida con la piedrita que escogiste.
• Algunos te echan la bendición de la Virgen, es decir, recitan palabras como "Que la Virgen del Valle siempre te acompañe, que te de mucha salud y prosperidad" mientras te colocan la ofrenda. Dato curioso: si es una pulcera, te piden que sea en la muñeca izquierda porque "es la más cercana al corazón".
• Compras algo en su puesto y/o te vas bendecido por la Virgen del Valle a visitar otros, y se repite lo mismo.
Si no crees en vírgenes, en Dios ni nada de eso, pues, al menos te hacen un regalo bonito y te desean que te vaya bien... ¿cómo y por qué decir que no a eso?
Luego de visitar los puestos de artesanos, mi familia y yo entramos a la espectacular capilla de la Virgen del Valle.
Apenas entras, todo es luz y color.
La paleta de colores es blanco, azul y amarillo. Colores que desde entonces, inevitablemente me recuerdan a la Vallita. El lugar es una pequeña capilla en la que había poca gente en ese momento, rodeada de vitrales con pinturas hermosas y coloridas, y ese día todo estaba lleno de flores.
Me senté un rato junto a mi mamá a contemplar en silencio a la escultura de la Virgen del Valle y a respirar ese momento, y era inevitable sentirse emocionado, conmovido y agradecido.
Los margariteños son personas con mucha devoción a la Virgen del Valle, y a uno como turista se le hace inevitable contagiarse de ese espíritu tan lindo y especial que ellos sienten hacia su Vallita.
En definitiva, tenían razón: visitar el santuario de la Virgen del Valle es toda una experiencia.
Tu última foto esta bellisima ¡Digna de una postal!, con respecto a vallita yo tampoco soy muy creyente pero doy fe de que si es milagrosa y aunque tengo mucho tiempo sin ir a su santuario (y creo que le debo una promesa) su lugar es especial y uno de mis favoritos cuando visito la isla. I wouldn't use any of these gifts because I'm not a believer, but I would accept them with pleasure, not out of moral obligation, but because the gesture is genuine, and that means a lot. ILMKK.

Because I respect those who believe in it, and I'm not going to use it just for the sake of using it, I don't like wearing anything on top of me... if it were up to me, I'd walk around naked xd
