My mom was in my city some time ago, accompanying me for an important event in my career, and we took advantage of her visit to go as a family to the Mérida cable car. We had been there several times before, but the landscapes are so beautiful that if you have an open heart, you can still find surprises.
Mi mamá estaba en mi ciudad hace un tiempo acompañándome para un evento importante en mi carrera, y aprovechamos la visita para ir juntos en familia al teleférico de Mérida. Ya habíamos ido antes varias veces, pero los paisajes son tan bonitos que si tienes el corazón abierto, puedes conseguirte con sorpresas.
We started the trip from a building in the city with views of the Sierra Nevada, where you could see the entire cable car structure, which from that distance looked so tiny amidst the vastness of the mountains. Upon arriving at the first station, we purchased tickets for $20 each and waited a while to enter the cabins.
Emprendimos el paseo desde un edificio en la ciudad con vistas hacia la Sierra Nevada, donde se podía ver toda la estructura del teleférico, que desde esa distancia se ve tan mínimo entre la vastedad de la montaña.
Al llegar a la primera estación, compramos los boletos por un valor de 20$ cada uno, y esperamos un rato para ingresar a las cabinas.
During the first ascent to the second station, there's usually a short narration about what you can observe around through the cabin windows. I almost know it all by heart: they explain where the name of the Mérida cable car system, "Mukumbarí," comes from—it means "where the sun rests" in indigenous dialects.
Durante el primer ascenso a la segunda estación, usualmente se escucha una corta narración sobre lo que puedes observar a los alrededores por los ventanales de la cabina. Ya me lo sé casi todo de memoria: te explican de donde viene el nombre del sistema teleférico de Mérida "Mukumbarí", que significa "donde se posa el sol" en dialectos indígenas.
As you go further, they point out that if you look to a certain side, you’ll see the Chama River, one of the longest rivers in the country. And my favorite part of the narration is when they talk about the "yagrumos" also called "mountain canes". These are very tall trees that aren't actually white as they seem. When you look closely, you realize they are a very light shade of green, and amidst the vast dark green surrounding them, they seem white. I've had the opportunity to come across their large leaves on the ground during my mountain hikes, and many times when looking up, it's difficult to see the treetops. They grow over 1000 meters above sea level, in humid and cloudy forests, and they are beautiful.
A medida que avanzas te indican que si volteas a tal lado podrás ver el Río Chama, que es de los ríos más largos del país. Y mi parte favorita de la narración es cuando hablan sobre los yagrumos, también llamados canas de la montaña, que son árboles altísimos y en realidad no son blancos como parecen, ya que al mirarlos de cerca te das cuenta que son de un tono de verde muy claro, y entre la vastedad verde oscuro que les rodean, parecen blancos. He tenido la oportunidad de toparme con sus grandes hojas desde el suelo en mis excursiones a la montaña, y muchas veces al mirar hacia arriba, es difícil ver la copa. Crecen a más de 1000 metros sobre el nivel del mar, en bosques húmedos y nublados, y son preciosos.
The cable car system consists of five stations, each at a higher level within the mountains, and it's impressive how the landscape and vegetation change around you. How the environment transitions from lush green to gradually become pure cold rock in shades of brown, white, gray, and black, speckled with the light green of the fluffy "frailejones". These are plants that can live many years and store water in such hostile altitudes in the Andes mountain range.
El sistema teleférico consta de 5 estaciones, cada una a mayor nivel entre las montañas, y es impresionante cómo cambia el paisaje y la vegetación alrededor. Cómo el ambiente pasa de verde frondoso, a poco a poco pura roca fría de tonalidades marrón, blanco, gris y negro moteada del verde claro de los peluditos frailejones, que son plantas que pueden durar muchísimos años y almacenan agua en esas alturas tan hostiles en la cordillera de los Andes.
While exploring the stations, I noticed some curious photos at a souvenir counter. The vendor might have thought I wanted to buy keychains or local sweets, but I asked her if the black-and-white photos I was looking at were for sale. She said no and told me they were photos from the time when the Sierra Nevada hosted international skiers, as skiing competitions used to be held among its perpetual snows back in the 1950s.
Curioseando en las estaciones, noté que en un mostrador donde vendían souvenirs habían algunas fotos curiosas. La vendedora quizá pensaría que quería comprar los llaveros o dulces locales del mostrador, cuando le pregunté si vendía las fotos en blanco y negro que estaba viendo. Me dijo que no, y me contó que eran fotos de la época cuando la Sierra Nevada era anfitrión de esquiadores internacionales, ya que entre sus perpetuas nieves se celebraban competencias de esquí, por allá en los años 50.
I already knew that there used to be five glaciers spread across what is now called Pico Bolívar (formerly La Columna), Pico La Concha, Pico Bonpland, Pico Humboldt, and Pico Espejo. Recently, Venezuela's last glacier (the Humboldt glacier, La Corona) was no longer classified as a glacier since it no longer met the characteristics of one. Also, these random images I found at that counter seemed to show a place very different from the Sierra Nevada today, because those dense white snows no longer exist as they did in the pictures.
Ya yo conocía que antes existían 5 glaciares repartidos entre el ahora llamado Pico Bolívar (antes era La Columna), pico La Concha, pico Bonpland, pico Humboldt y pico Espejo, y recientemente el último glaciar de Venezuela (el del Humboldt, glaciar La Corona) fue desestimado como glaciar por ya no cumplir las características de uno. Además, estas imágenes al azar que conseguí en ese mostrador parecen mostrar un lugar muy ajeno a lo que ahora es la Sierra Nevada, porque esas densas y blancas nieves ya no existen como allí parecen.
It was both beautiful and sad to transport myself to an era I never knew just by looking at those images; they are some of the secrets behind the Mérida cable car.
Fue lindo y triste a la vez transportarme a una época que nunca conocí al ver esas imágenes; son de esos secretos detrás del teleférico de Mérida.
On the other hand, we continued our ascent to the final station of the cable car: Pico Espejo. On the way, we saw a huge and stunning rainbow that painted the natural scenery like a fairytale. Truly, seeing it from an aerial cabin ascending through the mountains felt like something out of a movie.
Por otro lado, continuamos nuestro ascenso a la última estación del teleférico: Pico Espejo. En el camino, pudimos ver un enorme y precioso arcoíris que pintaba el escenario natural como un cuento de hadas. Realmente, verlo desde una cabina en el aire ascendiendo entre las montañas, parecía sacado de una película.
At the Loma Redonda station, we quickly went out to see the "Laguna de los Anteojos" situated between the mountain massif. I suppose it gets that name because it consists of two lagoons together that from above look like an almost perfect mirror.
En la estación Loma Redonda, salimos rápidamente a ver la Laguna de los Anteojos que se posan entre el macizo montañoso. Supongo tendrán ese nombre porque son dos lagunas juntas y desde arriba se ven como un casi perfecto espejo.
Since I love hiking, I couldn't help but notice the mountain trails connecting the stations and wondered what it would be like to walk across all five stations. Surely, someone must have already done it.
A mí, que me encanta el senderismo, se me hizo inevitable ver los senderos en la montaña que conectan las estaciones, y me pregunté cómo sería recorrer las 5 estaciones pero caminando. Seguramente, alguien ya lo ha hecho.
It's curious because I no longer see the Mérida cable car as just another tourist. Perhaps motivated by the years I've lived here, I think every time I go a little further and open myself up to learning a little more than what the guides always show or tell tourists. In this way, I managed to learn a little more about what's behind the most famous cable car in Venezuela.
Es curioso porque ya no veo el teleférico de Mérida como una turista más, sino que quizá motivado por los años que tengo viviendo aquí, pienso cada vez que voy un poquito más allá y me abro a conocer un poquito más de lo que los guías siempre muestran o dicen a los turistas. De esa forma, conseguí conocer un poquito más de lo que está detrás del teleférico más famoso de Venezuela.
