Short visit to Ananuri Fortress

"No preamble today" — none

We decided to go to the capital of Georgia by car, and were pleasantly surprised by the beauty that opened up to us along the way. After driving for an hour and a half, the driver stopped the car and we saw the ancient walls of the citadel.

The Ananuri fortress has been preserved in two parts: the main citadel and fragments of the lower one. Unfortunately, almost nothing remains of the structures of the lower part, except for an abandoned, collapsed church. In the past, these walls helped repel a considerable number of raids by conquerors... The Caucasus has always been a place of clashes of interests of different peoples and states.
Guides say that previously the fortress was several times larger, and this is only a part that has survived to this day. This is the last refuge of the defenders in case the main walls fall. As I understand it, this is something like a Donjon in medieval feudal fortresses.

Three units of fortress towers have survived. Today you can go up and inspect only one of them. But the guide warns that it is unsafe. We see that the warning does not bother anyone. Crowds of tourists fill these dilapidated buildings. One thing I noticed is that a person on a journey believes that nothing can happen to him because he is on vacation and not at war. Human psychology is a paradoxical thing.
The guide reports that the most famous tower in the complex is the inner tower, built in the 12th and 13th centuries. He adds that the tower was... a prison. It's quite strange. Why did they put a prisoner in a tower when you can put him in a basement? Moreover, it is strange why this tower was attached to the temple.

We are moving along the walls clockwise. Before us is the Assumption Church of the 17th century, the walls of which are richly decorated with carved decor. Here are the main symbols of these places: the vine and the cross.
When entering a low temple, the visitor must bow his head. The interior is ascetic. The ancient frescoes are impressive. Here is the Last Judgment, here is St. George.

Another Temple. The guide informs you that this is the Temple of the Virgin Mary.
If you have a rich imagination, here you can easily visit the image of the Middle Ages. Here is a narrow street
here is a dried plane tree, here are tiles and ancient stones. Here comes a proud woman with a jug on her shoulder...
The Ananuri fortress is one of the best monuments of the late Middle Ages in the Caucasus.
This castle is mentioned in all guidebooks and has the greatest popularity and safety, as well as a convenient location. A short distance from the capital and ski resorts. And the most important thing is free entry. There are so many reasons to visit this wonderful place.

After visiting the fortress, we drove for about five to ten minutes, after which the driver made another stop. A green water mirror opened in front of us. This is the Zhinvali reservoir.
It is almost impossible to drive past; every guest of the country stops here. The place is really very beautiful.
The smartphone cannot convey either the depth of color or its beauty.

That,s all for today.
Stand by

Sincerely yours
