I had heard that there were many works by Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona, but I had no idea that his buildings were so prominently located in the city center as I walked through the city.
At first glance, it had a presence that was evident from its appearance alone that this was a great structure. Since this visit to Barcelona was decided suddenly, I did not decide in advance where I would go and what places I would visit. The only thing we decided on was to visit the Sagrada Familia church. Therefore, I thought that I would be happy to visit the Gaudí-designed buildings that I had heard existed in the city, but that I would not be able to see them during my visit this time.
By chance, we happened to find a Gaudí-designed building near the subway station we used. I was sure that this beautiful building must have been designed by Gaudí, because many tourists were taking pictures of it, so I looked it up and found that it was one of the buildings registered as a World Heritage site.
I felt that Gaudí's work answered the universal question of what beauty is. The sense of beauty that people perceive differs greatly from culture to culture. In some cultures, "yellow" is a color expressed as "jealousy," but in some places, it is a color that represents "peace. In this way, the sense of beauty felt by different cultures is very different, but I felt that these buildings designed by Gaudí transcended cultural differences and religious values, and expressed the beauty felt by human beings.
バルセロナにはAntoni Gaudí（アントニオ・ガウディ―）の作品がたくさんあるとは聞いていたのですが、町をバルセロナ市内を歩いているとこんなにも目立つ中心街にその建造物があるとは知りませんでした。
一目見ればこれは素晴らしい建造物だとその外見だけでわかる存在感を示していました。 今回のバルセロナ観光は急に決まったこともあって、事前にどこに遊びに行くとか、観光場所などを決めませんでした。 決めたのはサクラダファミリア教会に行くことだけ。 そのため、市内にあるとは聞いていたガウディ―が設計した建造物には行けたらうれしいけど、今回の訪問ではみれないと思っていました。
すると、偶然ではあるのですがわたしたちが使った地下鉄の駅の近くにガウディ―が設計した建築物を偶然発見することが出来ました。 観光客がたくさん写真を撮っていて、この美しい建物はきっとガウディ―が設計したものに間違いないと思って調べてみると、世界遺産に登録されている建造物の１つでした。
「美」とは何かと言う普遍的な問いに答えてくれている気がしたガウディ―の作品でした。 文化によって人が感じる「美」の意識はとても違います。文化によっては「黄色」は「嫉妬」と表現した色ですが、場所によっては「平和」を表す色でもあります。 そのように、文化によって感じる美的感覚はとても異なるものなのですが、ガウディ―が設計したこれらの建物は文化の差異を超えて、又は、宗教的な価値観を超えて人間が感じる美を表現している感じがしました。
