The island of the Knights, Malta. Luca, Paola e Valletta.
It was a quicky jump on the southern part of the Mediterranean sea the flight was really cheap, 16 euros for going back and forth from Bologna and the accomodation was easy on the wallet too being hosted in hause close to Valletta.
After we arrived at the airport we walked all the way to Paola, usually the streets around the airports aren't the best ones but you can have a nice look of what the place is looking outside all the tourist shades. And what I found and did not expect was the similarity with south Italy, maybe I was expecting something with more african influence but Malta resembled me a lot of the southern parts of Italy.
As we walked we were greeted by Fichi d'india( I don't know why they are called like this in english they go by prickly pears) wich are awesome both in taste and how the plant works being a kind of cacti that turn it's leaves into wood when the sprouts of new ones grow from the leaf.Be careful if you happen to eat it's fruit as it's full of small needles, they don't hurt much but they are pretty insidius and hard to take out.
Paola is a small town close to Valletta with two storey houses that are overshadow by the giant Catherdral that arise from the main place, looks like a very quiet town with some bars and stores.
From here we took the bus wich has taken us at the wide place with the fountain before the narrow bridge to get into the historical center of la Valleta.
La Valletta is a cool looking town with many different view but an homogeneous look, at some point I thought to be in a last century moving jigsaw kinda like in the movie Inception but each street have some details that differ it from the other although not at first look.
It's a workout to getting around here as there are many up and downs on this small peninsula and if you get close to the seaside you'll have to walk downhill and then back to get in the center.
The old harbour show that Malta has probably been the center of many wars with it's many turrets and big walls and cannons showing up often in the northen parts, I wasn't able to visit as it was closed on that day so I read about it in a library that it was the case.
At night the air spark up and the city get full of people and music and the hot weather is much more easy on the breathing. I highly reccomend it and I would love to have tried more foods in the really nice restaurants of La Valletta, for what I could tell the speciality was the maltese rabbit but there's a lot of choiche especially in seafood.
The guard towers can be found in many points of the island and they are like a symbol with their huge windows to let the cannon loose on the invaders, I wish I had a bit more time here to travel around and maybe reach Gozo, Malta's other island.
