Piazza San Carlo

Ooh my memories of Turin, lovely city in the north of Italy that I always wish to return to. I am so happy that I can relive these beautiful memories, from a couple of years ago, when I was visiting a very special friend who lives there.

Whenever I travel during a holiday, I am very careful to take photos that are not so full of decorations, although sometimes it is difficult, because I think that making a blog so specific can be complex, I like to talk about the tours in general and not about what you saw in the cities occasionally, as this changes every year.

So I usually keep photos to tell stories and the others, personal, that I keep to remember those festive places where I usually share with friends and families. As the Worldmappin winter challenge was taking form, I was excited to dig through those personal photos to share a bit of what I had been holding back. I wasn't disappointed in the quest, I always take a lot of photos and it turns out I have some nice material to share with you several magical walks of the holiday season.

I'm one of the group that really enjoys these things, even more in December. I look forward to this time of the year, I love the atmosphere, the music and above all the Christmas food haha of course I do, so we will find some of that during this first tour that I want to share in the #WinterChallenge.

Being in Torino during Christmas time turns out to be less overwhelming than other bigger cities. Besides the intense cold that I can't forget, during the day the city kept an acceptable pace, in some areas almost null, but during the night everything was full of colorful lights and people filling the bars and cafes.

Piazza Castello

Piazza Palazzo di Città

The good thing is that the main points of interest are quite close to each other. From Piazza Castello, the center of everything, you can walk five minutes in different directions and reach either Piazza san Carlo, Piazza Palazzo di Città, the Porta Palatina and the imposing Mole Antonelliana.

Each space is decorated with different patterns that differentiate the places according to the structures that most seek to highlight. In the case of the center, the Palazzo Reale is striking enough not to need any kind of decoration, but it is the place where they usually set up the Christmas tree garden that becomes the main Christmas attraction.

It is the space sought by all families and friends to take souvenir photos with the signs announcing Christmas. It is a fairly large garden in which, despite all the people who come to it, it is easy to get a spot to take nice pictures and take a lot of selfies, which I will save for me because I am hanging out with a lot of people.

During December 2022, the Palazzo Reale di Torino had part of the facade covered by works, so this Christmas arrangement diverted a bit of attention from that part of the renovations. However, I can't help but see a flag waving and I wanted to take a photo where the whole Palazzo and the waving flag were noticeable. It wasn't easy, there was enough wind for the flag to play with my patience, but among many shots I got one acceptable enough.

[Esp]

Depending on which streets you visited, the decoration was different, although as I have seen in recent photos of friends, the “planetary” decoration of the Via Po is maintained year after year, it is one of the most beautiful without a doubt and stands out a lot with the dark sky for its long amplitude. During that trip I passed by it many times and was instantly happy.

Another nice place that they decorate very tastefully is the Teatro Regio Torino, its surroundings are illuminated by light projections that change colors and shape continuously. It's a nice show that, more than fun, is relaxing and emotional at the same time. On that occasion I tried to get tickets for a concert of Carmina Burana that they were presenting, but it turned out to be impossible. I was left with the desire to enter the theater, that performance had to have been absolutely magnificent.

As usual, not only the monuments and emblematic streets were dressed for Christmas, in fact many had no decorations at all, possibly to respect the artworks, something that I think is quite nice. But the stores, malls and neighborhoods added lights to different corners, making you walk during the night without any lighting problem hahaha.

[Esp]

Alberto Marchetti Gelaterie

Gelateria La Romana

Of course, ice cream parlors are part of those businesses that join the Christmas spirit and fill their stores with decorations, lights and Christmas trees.

But they don't stop there, they offer typical ice cream flavors of the moment and also make special and very beautiful desserts with Christmas motifs.

I entered, tasted and compared many ice cream shops during those walks, but I will not dwell on gastronomic details, that has its own place in my blog, what I did think was important is to show how beautiful one of my ice creams looks with the Christmas tree in the background. An ice cream is an excellent Christmas treat? I do not find that the freezing cold is an issue.

It is important to eat Italian gelato, it is an essential fuel to continue walking the streets of any city in this country. Thanks to these treats that turn into instant happiness, walking in cold temperatures is delightful.

We followed for about twenty minutes something that looked like the path of blue lights, which led us to the banks of the Po River where we could contemplate how beautifully the lights of nearby buildings were reflected in its calm waters.

There we crossed the Ponte Vittorio Emanuele I to see the church Gran Madre di Dio, which did not have any Christmas decorations, and in the distance the Monte del Capuccini which, on the contrary, stood out with a powerful blue because of the lights surrounding the structure due to the festivities.

[Esp]

After strolling along the banks of the river, we undid part of the way to enjoy the light show offered by the most famous tower of Torino, the Mole Antonelliana, where you can visit the museum of Italian cinema and various itinerant exhibitions.

However, at night, the impressive thing is to get close enough to contemplate its immensity and how beautifully its dome shines, which, of course, looks like a starry sky.

This building can be seen from different points of the city and I found it very funny that as we approached, it was hiding from our sight, it seemed that it did not want to be found, hiding between the nearest buildings. But I got it and got my photos, improvable but real.

In that area there are many local food and souvenir stores, as we are talking about the monumental building par excellence of the city, there is a lot of tourist activity in the surrounding area and other elements to visit, but of course, not with enough Christmas decorations to be collected in this entry. xD

[Esp]

IMG_3168.jpeg

Oh! During the day there is also Christmas atmosphere and no corner where there is economic activity escapes from the decorations. In this case, inside the Mercato di Porta Palazzo, they are usually very creative with the decoration of its surroundings, it is a way to win the curiosity of customers and, although this place is already a tourist reference par excellence, it never hurts to take advantage of Christmas marketing.

One such day I went to eat at the market's gastronomic fair, surrounded by lights, Santa Claus figures hanging everywhere and, of course, wonderful and very tempting food.

Of course, I wasn't going to end this post without mentioning the plethora of Panettone that crossed my path. It's not easy for someone like me to avoid getting distracted by every store that offered artisanal versions of this wonderful elaboration.

For many of us outside of this area, Panettone is something we consume only in December, but in northern Italy that's not exactly the case. Anyway, the remarkable thing about this is that each store employs very particular and really eye-catching decorations to make you come and check out their artisan bakeries. Turin is a city of chocolates par excellence, so you can't imagine the smell that accompanies you in many places. Wonderful.

[Esp]

¡Ah!

This city is beautiful, elegant and with a super interesting occult history. There is a lot to talk and learn about it, something I have proposed to do calmly, although it has been a pleasure to be able to show this bright and festive version that, until now, I hadn't considered posting.

December 2022 remained in my heart as one of the most special ones, because I spent part of the month traveling, something that any of us who are part of this wonderful community love to do.

I can't wait to come back and enjoy again these magical tours in Northern Italy. It's so worth it to see the different faces of a city, to listen to the locals tell you about their Christmas experiences year after year and to enjoy the memories that go along with those traditions so different from what we are used to.

And what about you, are you going to share with us your Christmas travels for this #WinterChallenge? I hope you'll join the challenge so that together we can get in the festive mood.

[Esp]

I look forward to this time of the year, I love the atmosphere, the music and above all the Christmas food haha of course I do, so we will find some of that during this first tour that I want to share in the #WinterChallenge.

Of course you like the atmosphere and food the most haha. I like the feeling that is in the air... on one side a bit crowded and hectic but on the other calm and silent.. like everyone knows the year is ending and holds on for a sec.

Being in Torino during Christmas time turns out to be less overwhelming than other bigger cities. Besides the intense cold that I can't forget, during the day the city kept an acceptable pace, in some areas almost null, but during the night everything was full of colorful lights and people filling the bars and cafes.

haha of course the cold is your enemy. But it was nice to hear it was acceptable :D Thanks for describing the atmosphere. Makes me dive into the picture you have in mind and your mood back then. <3

The good thing is that the main points of interest are quite close to each other. From Piazza Castello, the center of everything, you can walk five minutes in different directions and reach either Piazza san Carlo, Piazza Palazzo di Città, the Porta Palatina and the imposing Mole Antonelliana.

OMG so many Piazzas!!! Piazzas are the best in southern countries. It's where all the life is happening. Where you find the best food, drinks, and even music most of the time! Love it! Never been to Turin, but the way you describe the different decorations and vibes on the piazzas already want me to go there!

Of course, ice cream parlors are part of those businesses that join the Christmas spirit and fill their stores with decorations, lights, and Christmas trees. But they don't stop there, they offer typical ice cream flavors of the moment and also make special and very beautiful desserts with Christmas motifs.

OMG Awesome! Where else than Italy do you get ice cream in winter!?? haha and then even with its own flavours!! <3 <3

My favorite part is the decoration of the star constellations. As far as I know in Italy, they have been important for a long time. In a lot of cities, you find references to constellations (Venezia, Roma, etc). This makes it very mystique and super interesting for me. I would love to time travel to those places one day.

You look sooo happy in those pictures! Very nice and beautiful. Glad you had a nice time in Turin and thanks for taking us with you and sharing us around on your little Christmas adventure <3 - Your post is well deserved in the top 3!!

  • Also, winterchallenge mood on! hehe

Hello! Thanks a lot for passing by. This city is very impressive, clean and classy, after all is the placement of Juventus football team, so there is money around hahahaha.

I love seeing city decorations at Christmas and that one is beautiful. The contrast of the lights make it a magical place.🎉

¡Hola!

Jajaja me pasa mucho.

No te preocupes, yo tampoco 🤣🤣

Me encanta jajaja 😃

The beauty of the city at Christmas is truly amazing,❤️

Absolutely it is, they set out to exalt its charms and they succeed to a great extent. I hope your ok, thanks for dropping by ☺️

This is a beauty that must be immortalized, its beauty is truly extraordinary. The city looks colorful with Christmas decorations, it is extraordinary.
Have a nice day my aunt♥️

Now I know I must go to Turin sometime, especially for Christmas. I like the cold, even though the weather in Venezuela is like something out of an oven. What a lovely way to decorate a city with lights... I even think I saw some constellations over there. It looks very clean and bright, you can even feel the good vibes just reading you! I was fascinated by this post. Greetings from the other side of the world.

I could almost feel the chilly air and see the glowing lights! Your vivid descriptions of Turin during the festive season are truly impressive, they brought the city's charm and holiday spirit to life. 😍

The idea of gelato as Christmas fuel is fantastic! Though I don’t usually dare to indulge since I might catch a cold after eating it, lol. But for the holiday spirit, I’ll give it a try soon!

What a lovely place. The decors are magnificent !BBH !LOLZ

Your post brings a very special and beautiful Christmas vibe, thanks a lot for sharing! That makes me wishing to get up and plan a trip in December until decorations are still there :) and winter ice-cream sounds as perfect idea that breaks stereotypes and inspires to do unusual things :D

Hey Anna! I do appreciate your comment, I’m so glad this could inspire some other travels. Would you join Worldmappin winter challenge? You could join even just snapping, is so easy.

I would love to join the winter challange, in the place where I live (Tbilisi, Georgia) Christmas decorations were not on yet but once they are, I would try to do a nice Christmas walking story about Tbilisi !

Gracias!😃

Lovely❤

Hey, I have a cousin who lives in Turin and the only time she came to Venezuela she told us how beautiful the city is, as well as its cultural life and history. Although she was born here she has lived all her life there she doesn't even speak Spanish very well. Excellent post and how nice to appreciate these decorations on these important dates.

What photos, Nina's good taste combined with Italian elegance. I understand that they don't want to load the photos with lights, although I think that everything has its moment and its objective. These have been spectacular.

Best regards.
