Visit 8 Historical Places in Tanah Abang with the Jakarta Good Guide

in Pinmapplelast month
Hello everyone, how are you? I hope you are all right. At the end of December 2023, I took the time to take part in a Walking Tour in the Jakarta area with the Jakarta Good Guide. I do this every month when I start to get bored with work. You must have heard about this. I have followed 10 routes from 2022 to 2024. The route is Tanah Abang, the Legendary Market in Jakarta. What is the route?

tekstil Museum Indonesia and Banjir Kanal

The meeting point for this agenda is the Textile Museum. I have visited this museum, you can see some of my writings. So, I didn't take many photos of this place. This textile museum has a collection of 500 textiles in the rare category. More precisely, the batik museum, so it's easy to remember. This place was opened in 1970 and is currently managed by the DKI Jakarta government and inaugurated by Mrs. Tin Soeharto.

Walking further, I found all the rivers, but not rivers. The West Flood Canal can control the air entering Jakarta to prevent flooding. Did you know, Jakarta is an area prone to flooding? The west channel flood was initiated by GOW (the forerunner of the PU service). The city of Batavia is famous for being submerged in water and flooded. Causing flooding, creating canal flooding.

In 1913 a new upstream was built in Manggarai led by Hendri with a focus on forming formations, lakes, and others in Batavia. In Batavia, sanitation is lacking. The East Flood Canal was also built in 2003. That's all I can share about the West Flood Canal.

Tanah Abang Station and Tanah Abang Multipurpose Crossing Bridge

I often use Tanah Abang station. We didn't visit this station directly, we only saw it from the bridge. Tanah Abang Station was built in 1910 by BOS. Previously, this station served long-distance trains and stopped serving in 2017. There are long-distance trains from Merak to Blitar. Currently, Tanah Abang Station is one of the cultural heritage stations in Indonesia.

Not far from Tanah Abang station is the Tanah Abang Multipurpose Pedestrian Bridge. This bridge is used by small traders at Tanah Abang Market. Did you know, Tanah Abang is the most unorganized market in Jakarta? There are a lot of sellers and it's difficult to organize so spot sellers are needed.

Tanah Abang Block G Market and Rosario Marsal

Apart from the pedestrian bridge, a special market for street vendors (Market Jaya) was also built but sales are the same. Starting from clothes, shoes, sandals, food, and others. So the Block G Market was built under Governor Jokowi, but currently, the market is abandoned. In the past, to increase buyers, there were often activities at the Block G market. Currently, it is said that there are sales of illegal goods at that place.

And one more thing, at Tanah Abang Market there is a figure who controls this market, this figure's name is Rosario Marsal. He always carries a sharp weapon. The person most feared by salespeople. And he is also related to Haji Lulung, an influential person in Tanah Abang Market.

Kapitan Lim

Kapitan Lim is the number 3 Chinese person in Tanah Abang. He is an influential person in Tanah Abang. This place is the home of Kapitan Lim. It was once used as a monastery and is now a very famous restaurant in Tanah Abang. This restaurant still uses the name "Kapitan Lim. And sells a lot of Asian food.

Tanah Abang Block A Market

The highland area in Jakarta which is owned by Yostinus Ving is the founding landlord of Senen Market and Saturday Market (Tanah Abang). The market has been determined by the Dutch government. Tanah Abang sells textiles and the Senen market sells fruit. The route from Tanah Abang to Senen is one lane. Senen market was built in 1700, second is Tanah Abang market.

Al-Ma'mur Mosque

Initially, it was only a prayer room, and in 1800 it was turned into a mosque and was connected with Mataram input. Apart from that, this mosque also helps spread Islam in Jakarta. Of course, the mosque became a means of da'wah and Tanah Abang became a center for the spread of Islam. From the information I got, this mosque was built by KH Muhammad Asyuro who was a descendant of royalty from the Mataram kingdom. I have explained this place in another story.

The last place is Gang Sabeni. Sabeni is a figure and champion from Jakarta. His name is very famous in Jakarta. Sabeni became a respected champion from Jakarta. Sabeni was born in 1860. Sabeni once challenged a powerful Jakarta champion named Macan Kemayoran. What happened? Sabeni won and married the daughter of the Kemayoran Tiger Champion. Sabeni died on August 15, 1945. And Sabeni also created pencak silat.
