The Dolomites, although beautiful, have one huge drawback - they are very expensive, and the most expensive is accommodation. My wallet was not prepared to spend the night in Alpine hotels, so we chose either accommodation in the wild or in a tent on a camping site. After a few days spent in such spartan conditions, we wanted to enjoy a little more comfort, hence the idea to go for one day to a large city and take advantage of much cheaper accommodation there than in the Dolomites. We chose Verona because Verona is located right next to Lake Garda and is very, very close to the Alps. It is also important that our trip to the Dolomites was nothing more than a honeymoon, and Verona is the city where William Shakespeare set the stories about the most famous pair of lovers, Romeo and Juliet.

Dolomity choć piękne maja jedną ogromną wadę – są bardzo drogie, a najdroższe są noclegi. Mój portfel nie był przygotowany na to aby nocować w Alpejskich hotelach wiec wybieraliśmy albo noclegi na dziko, albo w namiocie na polu kampingowym. Po kilku dniach spędzonych w takich spartańskich warunkach zapragnęliśmy zaczerpnąć trochę więcej wygody stąd pojawił się pomysł, aby pojechać na jeden dzień do jakiegoś dużego miasta i tam skorzystać z dużo tańszego niż w dolomitach noclegu. Wybór padł na Weronę, a to dlatego, że Werona leży tuz obok jeziora Garda, oraz leży bardzo, bardzo blisko Alp. Nie bez znaczenia pozostaje również fakt, że nasz wyjazd w Dolomity był niczym innym jak tylko podróżą poślubną, a przecież Werona to miasto w którym William Shakespeare umiejscowił historie o najsłynniejszej parze kochanków, o Romeo i Julii.

We spent only a few hours in the historic center of Verona, but they were very intense moments, because Verona is not such a small city. Currently, over a quarter of a million people live there, and many times more come here every year to visit the city's most important monuments.
The city, or at least its historical part, is located on the bend of the Adige River. On the bank of the river opposite the city center, on a hill, there is the Gothic Castle of St. Peter, the construction of which began in 1354. We did not go inside, we were content only with the beautiful panorama of the city stretching from the castle walls. After descending the castle hill, we crossed the river on the only bridge that dates back to ancient times. Ponte Pietra, built 100 years BC, is a five-span stone arch bridge with a total length of 120 meters. Immediately after crossing the other side, we went to the Complesso del Duomo di Verona, i.e. the Cathedral in Verona. Built in the Romanesque style, the interior of the building is extremely beautifully decorated with picturesque frescoes.

W historycznym centrum Werony spędziliśmy zaledwie kilka godzin, ale były to bardzo intensywne chwile, bo przecież Werona nie jest takim małym miastem. Obecnie mieszka w nim ponad ćwierć miliona ludzi, a wielokrotnie więcej każdego roku przyjeżdża do niego aby pozwiedzać najważniejsze zabytki miasta.
Miasto, a przynajmniej jego historyczna część, położone jest w zakolu rzeki Adyga. Na przeciwległym do centrum miasta brzegu rzeki na wzniesieniu znajduje się gotycki Zamek Świętego Piotra, którego budowę rozpoczęto jeszcze w roku 1354. Do środka nie wchodziliśmy, zadowoliliśmy się wyłącznie przepiękną panoramą miasta rozciągającą się z murów zamku. Po zejściu ze wzgórza zamkowego przeszliśmy na drugą stronę rzeki po jedynym moście, który pamięta czasy starożytne. Ponte Pietra zbudowany 100 lat przed nasza erą jest pięcioprzęsłowym kamiennym mostem łukowym o długości całkowitej wynoszącej 120 metrów. Zaraz po przejściu na drugi brzeg trafiliśmy do Complesso del Duomo di Verona czyli Katedry w Weronie. Zbudowana w stylu Romańskim budowla we wnętrzu jest niezwykle pięknie ozdobiona malowniczymi freskami.

Other places in Verona worth visiting are the Arena di Verona, the ancient Amphitheater in Verona. It was built in the first century AD and was the third largest amphitheater of the ancient Roman Empire, which could accommodate up to 30,000 spectators. From the amphitheater, in a few minutes' walk you can get to the most crowded tourist attraction in the whole city, Casa di Giulietta, considered to be the place where Shakespeare's Juliet lived. In the tight yard there is a tenement house with a massive stone balcony on which, according to the story told by Shakespeare, Romeo climbed to his beloved. Just below the Balcony there is a sculpture of Juliet. Julia has one breast exposed and very, very polished, because many of the hordes of tourists visiting Verona believe that visiting this place and stroking Julia's breast will bring them luck in love. Whether this is true, I don't know, it's hard to say, we didn't pet it.

Innymi miejscami w Weronie zasługującymi na uwagę jest Arena di Verona czyli starożytny Amfiteatr w Weronie. Zbudowany został w pierwszym wieku naszej ery i był trzecim co do wielkości amfiteatrem starożytnego Imperium Rzymskiego, który mógł pomieścić aż 30 tysięcy widzów. Spod amfiteatru w kilka minut spacerem można przedostać się do najbardziej zatłoczonej atrakcji turystycznej w całym mieście, czyli Casa di Giulietta, uznawanym za miejsce, w którym mieszkała Szekspirowska Julia. W ciasnym podwórzu znajduje się kamienica z masywnym kamiennym balkonem na który zgodnie z historią opowiedzianą przez Shakespeare do swojej ukochanej wspinał się Romeo. Tuż pod Balkonem stoi rzeźba przedstawiająca Julię. Julia ma jedna pierś odsłoniętą i bardzo, bardzo mocno wypolerowaną, a to dlatego, że wielu z tej chmary turystów odwiedzających Weronę wieży, że odwiedzenie tego miejsca i pogłaskanie Julii po piersi przyniesie im szczęście w miłości. Czy tak jest, nie wiem ciężko powiedzieć, my nie głaskaliśmy.
