In my opinion, the most impressive feature of Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican is the gigantic dome that tops the building. Paradoxically, being in St. Peter and looking at the building from this perspective, the dome does not seem so big as it really is. A good perspective to see the enormity of the dome is any panorama of Rome seen best from one of the seven Roman hills. Then it is clearly visible that among the whole forest of various types of towers and domes, the Vatican is the largest.

W mojej opinii najbardziej imponującym elementem bazyliki świętego Piotra w Watykanie jest gigantyczna kopuła wieńcząca budynek. Paradoksalnie będąc na placu św. Piotra i patrząc z tej perspektywy na budynek kopula nie wydaje się wcale taka wielka jaka naprawdę jest. Dobrą perspektywą do zobaczenia ogromu kopuły jest dowolna panorama Rzymu oglądana najlepiej z jednego z siedmiu rzymskich wzgórz. Wówczas wyraźnie widać, że z pośród całego lasu różnego rodzaju wież i kopuł to właśnie ta Watykańska jest największa.

The second opportunity to find out about the gigantic size of the dome is to climb to its top. 551 narrow winding stairs lead from the base to the top. About halfway up, after climbing 320 steps, we can look inside the basilica and look up at the fabulous mosaic vault, or down at the confession of St. Peter, which, despite its 28 meters high, seems tiny. The balcony, which extends approximately 60 meters above the basilica floor, allows you to go around the inner part of the dome almost around the perimeter and take a close look at the beautiful mosaics depicting cherubim. It is only up close that you can see how laborious it must have been to create these mosaics and cover the entire interior of the basilica with them.

Drugą okazją do przekonania się o gigantycznych rozmiarach kopuły jest wejście na jej szczyt. Od podstawy do wierzchołka prowadzi 551 krętych wąskich schodów. Mniej więcej w połowie drogi na górę po pokonaniu 320 stopni możemy zajrzeć do wnętrza bazyliki i spojrzeć w górę na bajecznie mozaikowe sklepienie, lub w dół na konfesje św. Piotra, która pomimo swoich 28 metrów wysokości wydaje się malutka. Balkon rozciągający się mniej więcej na wysokości 60 metrów nad powierzchnią posadzki w bazylice pozwala obejść wewnętrzną część kopuły niemal po całym obwodzie i przyjrzeć się z bliska pięknym mozaikom przedstawiającym cherubinów. Dopiero z bliska widać, jak bardzo pracochłonne musiało być stworzenie tych mozaik i pokrycie nimi całego wnętrza bazyliki.

The last stage of the trip is going to the very top of the dome, from where there is a fabulous view of Rome, which, in the opinion of many people, is the best panorama of the city. From above, you can see its huge size best, because we are about a hundred meters above the surface of St. Peter, and the outer diameter of the dome is almost 60 meters. It seems incredible that the dome was created at a time when no one thought about using steel or reinforced concrete in construction. The entire dome weighs 14,000 tons, which is the same as the 250 Abrams tanks that our Polish Army will soon buy from the Americans. It is hard to imagine that for almost 500 years this dome with the mass of 250 tanks rests with an arch solely on four massive pillars.

Ostatni etap wycieczki to wyjście na samą górę kopuły skąd rozciąga się bajeczny widok na Rzym, który w opinii wielu osób twierdzi, że jest najlepszą panorama miasta. Z góry najlepiej widać jej potężne rozmiary, no bo przecież znajdujemy się około sto metrów ponad powierzchnią placu św. Piotra, a zewnętrzna średnica kopuły ma niemal 60 metrów. Niewiarygodne wydaje się to, że kopuła powstała w czasach, gdy nikt jeszcze nie myślał o używaniu w budownictwie stali czy żelbetonu. Cała ta kopuła waży 14 tysięcy ton i to jest tyle samo co 250 czołgów Abrams, które niebawem kupi od Amerykanów nasze Wojsko Polskie. Ciężko wyobrazić sobie że już niemal 500 lat ta kopuła o masie 250 czołgów opiera się łukiem wyłącznie na czterech masywnych filarach.

The main designer of the dome was Michelangelo, who started work on the dome in 1547, but unfortunately he did not live to the end of construction, because he died in 1564, i.e. several decades before the construction was completed. And it was not an easy construction. After the death of the main architect, Giacomo della Porta and Domenico Fontana undertook to complete the construction. At the time of commissioning, only the cupola of the Pantheon and the cupola of the Church of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence were larger and this condition continued until the industrial revolution and the invention of reinforced concrete. The biggest construction curiosity of the dome is that it consists of two internal and external shells, and a staircase winds between them, and when reaching its top we have to go leaning and leaning against the inner shell of the dome. Going to the top, I was afraid that the inner shell would not withstand, the wall against which I am leaning would break and we would fall inside with a great bang.

Głównym projektantem kopuły był Michał Anioł, który zaczął prace nad kopułą w roku 1547, ale niestety nie doczekał się końca budowy, gdyż zmarł w roku 1564, czyli kilkadziesiąt lat przed zakończeniem budowy. A nie była to łatwa budowa. Po śmierci głównego architekta dokończenia budowy podjęli się Giacomo della Porta i Domenico Fontana. W momencie oddania do użytkowania tylko kopuła Panteonu oraz kopuła kościoła Santa Maria del Fiore we Florencji były większymi i stan ten utrzymał się, aż do rewolucji przemysłowej i okresu wynalezienia betonu zbrojonego. Największą ciekawostką konstrukcyjną kopuły jest to, że składa się ona z dwóch powłok wewnętrznej oraz zewnętrznej, a pomiędzy nimi wije się klatka schodowa i wchodząc na jej szczyt musimy iść pochyleni i oparci o wewnętrzną powłokę kopuły. Idąc na szczyt balem się, że wewnętrzna powłoka nie wytrzyma, ściana o którą jestem oparty pęknie i z wielkim hukiem wpadniemy do środka.
