Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
In the heart of Alto Minho, in Paredes de Coura, we discover a preserved piece of the Portuguese rural soul: the granaries and the communal threshing floor, silent testimonies of a collective experience deeply linked to the land and the seasons. This visit was a true journey through time, and it is exactly the type of experience that I recommend to anyone looking for history and breathtaking landscapes.

Getting to the place is easy. The roads are in good condition and well signposted, and there is parking nearby (something not always found in these places). Even for those traveling with children, access is comfortable. The walking route to the center of the granaries is short and pleasant, surrounded by typical vegetation of the region and small granite houses.

Upon arrival, the scene looks like something out of a movie. The granaries (stone and wood structures) are built on pillars, protected by round "millstones" that prevent access by rodents. They were used to dry and store corn, protecting it from moisture and animals, an ingenious system that reveals the practical knowledge of agricultural communities of other times.

Next to the granaries is the communal threshing floor, a large space with a granite floor where the cereal was threshed, normally with the help of oxen. This was a true center of community life, where work mixed with socializing. Imagining the hubbub of families, the sound of clothes hitting the floor, the laughter of children and the smell of sun-dried corn is almost inevitable.

Historically, this area of Paredes de Coura has always been marked by a strong connection with agriculture. The granaries and the threshing floor are a legacy that goes beyond architecture: they are symbols of solidarity and sharing, at a time when the success of the harvest was everyone's responsibility. There were no fences or selfishness. The space belonged to everyone, and everyone contributed.

This place has been restored with great sensitivity, maintaining the original moth and allowing each of us to understand the function and importance of these elements. Along the route, there are information signs that help to contextualize the place, both from a historical and cultural point of view.

Furthermore, the surrounding landscape is brutal. The view over the valleys of Paredes de Coura is simply stunning, especially in the late afternoon, when the golden sunlight hits the granaries and gives the granite a warm, nostalgic glow. It is the perfect setting for photography lovers, or simply for those who like to lose themselves in moments of contemplation.

Além disso, a paisagem envolvente é brutal. The visit can be done in about an hour, but I strongly recommend taking your time and taking your time.
In short, the granaries and the community threshing floor are more than just a point of tourist interest, I consider them a visit to the roots of a people.
