Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
We finally arrived at the castle :-)
The view is breathtaking and the imagination begins to work.
Monsanto Castle, located at the top of the rocky hill, is a historical and cultural landmark in Portugal, which offers us a stunning view of the landscape that surrounds us. Its construction dates back to the medieval period, initially being built in the 12th century, during the reign of D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal. This castle was a crucial fortress in the defense of the territory against the invasions of the Moors and later during the border disputes with the Kingdom of León.

Over the centuries, it underwent several modifications and improvements, especially during the reign of D. Dinis and D. Fernando. Strategically located, it allowed control of the region's commercial and military routes, making it a vital point in the kingdom's defense.
As time passed, the castle's military importance diminished, but it continued to be a symbol of resistance. In the 17th century, during the Restoration War, it was used again for defensive purposes. However, after this time, it went into decline, until, in the 20th century, restoration works were carried out that preserved its structure and highlighted its historical value.

We climbed the first staircase and found a very tall square with stairs to the wall.
We continue and after passing through a new "door" we have the Chapel of Santa Maria do Castelo on our right side. We managed to get some photos through the windows but without being able to go in there.
In the middle of the enclosure we see a well called a cistern (although the cisterns were located at the top of the citadel), which was used to supply water to the population.

We went to the left side, went up another flight of stairs and were in the citadel.
Consisting of a walled courtyard with a single door, we find here the keep, isolated from the walls and located in the highest part of the fortification, allowing shooting over the walls. The tower had a quadrangular plan and the ground floor had no door. In 1815, the tower, which at some point was converted into a magazine, exploded, leaving only the mark of its delimitation in the living rock.

The last place we were going to visit corresponded to one of the greatest scenes in the series (House of Dragon) and where the image of the Dragon appears.
Today, Monsanto Castle is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors who want to explore its ruins and enjoy the panoramic views. The legends and stories associated with the castle, such as the famous legend of the “Miracle of Monsanto”, (which I already told you here) in which the population resisted a long siege, releasing the last heifer to deceive the enemies about their reserves, continue to delight and inspire visitors.

This castle is not only a testament to Portugal's military past, but also a monument that celebrates the region's identity and culture.
Tomorrow, as promised, I'll bring you a view of Monsanto, but at night!
