Historical City Istanbul and Buyukada (Big Island)

ISTANBUL, BUYUKADA

Many of you know Istanbul. Istanbul is a very big city with a history of nearly 2000 years, with important traces of civilization all over it. It is also the most populous city of the modern Turkish Republic. When you go to Istanbul to visit, you need to take a long time so that you can get to know the city thoroughly. History, nature, the sea... In short, this city has everything. There are also small but historical and beautiful islands within the borders of Istanbul. The most important of these islands is Büyükada. It means big island in English. Let's go on a journey to Istanbul via Büyükada.

Birçoğunuz İstanbul'u biliyorsunuz. İstanbul yaklaşık 2000 yıllık tarihiyle her tarafında medeniyete dair önemli izlerin olduğu çok büyük bir kent. Modern Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin de en kalabalık şehri. İstanbul'a gezmek için gittiğinizde uzun bir sürenizi ayırmanız lazım ki şehri adamakıllı tanıyabilisiniz. Tarih, doğa, deniz... Kısacası her şey var bu şehirde. İstanbul sınırları içerisinde küçük ama tarihi ve güzel adalar da var. Bu adalardan en önemlisi Büyükada. İngilizce'de büyük ada anlamına geliyor. Gelin birlikte Büyükada üzerinden bir İstanbul yolculuğuna çıkalım.

As I just mentioned, Büyükada is the largest and most historical island of Istanbul. Its old name in Greek is Prinkipos. This means Prince Islands. It is actually a modest place with an area of approximately 5.5 km2 and a population of approximately 7500. It is 2.3 km from the Maltepe coast of Istanbul and can only be reached by ferry. When you get on the Büyükada ferry from Maltepe pier, you find yourself here after a half-hour journey.

Az önce de bahsettiğim gibi Büyükada İstanbul'un en büyük ve en tarihi adası. Yunancadaki eski ismi Prinkipos. Bu da prens adaları anlamına geliyor. Yaklaşık 5,5 km2 yüzölçümüne ve yaklaşık 7500 nüfusa sahip mütevazi bir yer aslında. İstanbul'un Maltepe sahiline 2,3 km uzaklıkta ve ulaşım ancak vapurla sağlanabiliyor. Maltepe iskelesinden Büyükada vapuruna bindiğinizde yaklaşık yarım saatlik bir yolculuğun ardından kendinizi burada buluyorsunuz.

The Greek population dominated Büyükada until the 1940s, but after these years, the balance on the island changed and the Turkish population became the majority. Despite this, the island is a visiting point for Greeks and Greeks even today. Because one of the most important symbols of the island is Aya Yorgi Church and this church is an extremely sacred place for the Greek Christian people. The participation of millions of Greek people in the rituals held in mid-April proves this.

Büyükada'da 1940'lı yıllara kadar Rum nüfusu hakimmiş fakat bu yıllardan sonra adadaki denge değişmiş ve Türk nüfusu çoğunluğa geçmiş. Buna rağmen ada bugün dahi rumların ve Yunanların ziyaret noktası. Zira adanın en önemli simgelerinden birisi Aya Yorgi Kilisesi ve bu kilise Rum Hristiyan halkı için son derece kutsal bir yer. Nisan ayının ortasında yapılan ayinlere milyonlarca Rum insanın katılması da bunu ispatlar nitelikte.

Büyükada was used as a place of exile like other islands during the Byzantine period. The Ottoman Empire conquered Büyükada in the 15th century, but it still did not gain much importance. It gained importance in the years of the First World War, when the collapse of the Ottoman Empire was approaching, and the leading bureaucrats of the state started to build villas here. This situation continued after the establishment of the Turkish Republic and Büyükada turned into a full resort. As far as I can see, the majority of the buildings on the island are about 100 years old and have impressive architecture. Construction dates are written on the front of some buildings. I was able to observe that a significant part of it belongs to the 1910s and 1920s.

Büyükada Bizans döneminde diğer adalar gibi sürgün yeri olarak kullanılmış. Osmanlı İmparatorluğu 15. yy'da Büyükada'ı fethetmiş fakat yine çok fazla bir önem kazanamamış. Osmanlı'nın yıkılmasının yaklaştığı 1. Dünya Savaşı yıllarında önem kazanmış ve devletin ileri gelen bürokratları buralara villa yaptırmaya başlamışlar. Bu durum Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin kuruluşundan sonra da devam etmiş ve Büyükada tam bir sayfiye yerine dönmüş. Benim görebildiğim kadarıyla adadaki yapıların büyük çoğunluğu yaklaşık 100 yıllık geçmişe sahip olan ve mimarisi etkileyici yapılar. Bazı binaların önünde yapım tarihleri de yazıyor. Önemli bir kısmının 1910 ve 1920'li yıllara ait olduğunu gözlemleyebildim.

The importance of Büyükada today comes mostly from its touristic potential. Since it is outside the city center of Istanbul, Istanbulites flock to come here. Because Büyükada is a calm, historical, aesthetic and natural place. When you get off the ferry and set foot on the island, you see that nothing but simple motorcycles is used. It is forbidden to drive cars, except for some public officials. Until a few years ago, transportation on the island was provided by phaetons, but this situation started to attract attention in the 2010s because some horses tied to the carriages died from exhaustion. The cruelty of these animals by their owners mobilized animal rights activists, and finally, in 2019, carriage transportation was banned on the island. Today, if you want to go to any point on the island, for example, to Aya Yorgi Church, you have to take paid electric vehicles. We used the electric public transportation vehicle to go to Aya Yorgi.

Büyükada'nın bugünkü önemi daha çok turistik potansiyelinden geliyor. İstanbul'un kent merkezi dışında kaldığı için İstanbullular akın akın buraya geliyorlar. Zira Büyükada hem sakin, hem tarihi, hem estetik, hem doğal güzellikleri olan bir yer. Vapurdan inip adaya ayak bastığınızda basit motorsikletler dışında bir şey kullanılmadığını görüyorsunuz. Bazı kamu görevlileri hariç otomobil kullanılması yasak zaten. Birkaç yıl öncesine kadar adaki ulaşım faytonlarla sağlanıyordu fakat bu durum 2010'larda tepki çekmeye başladı çünkü faytonlara bağlanan bazı atlar yorgunluktan hayatlarını kaybettiler. Bu hayvanların sahiplerinden eziyet görmesi hayvan hakları savunucularını harekete geçirdi ve nihayet 2019 yılında adada faytonla ulaşım yasaklandı. Bugün artık ada herhangi bir noktaya, örneğin Aya Yorgi Kilisesi'ne, gitmek istiyorsanız ücretli elektrikli taşıtlara binmek zorundasınız. Biz de Aya Yorgi'ye gitmek için elektrikli toplu taşım aracını kullandık.

There are many options for those who want to stay in Büyükada or come and go for a day. Medium quality hotels, beach restaurants, picnic areas, historic buildings, car-free streets, etc. For many reasons people seem likely to be happy on this island. It really provides a great opportunity in a crowded and noisy city like Istanbul. Despite all this, I must state that Büyükada is a really expensive place. The prices of beach restaurants and hotels are twice as high as anywhere else in Istanbul. Electric vehicles and ferries are also very expensive. In other words, it may not be right to go without putting a solid amount of money in your pocket. :)

Büyükada'da konaklamak veya günübirlik gelip gitmek isteyenler için birçok seçenek mevcut. Orta kalitede oteller, sahil restoranları, piknik alanları, tarihi binalar, otomobilsiz sokaklar, vb. birçok sebeple insanın bu adada mutlu olası geliyor. İstanbul gibi kalabalık ve gürültülü bir kentte gerçekten büyük bir imkan sağlıyor. Tüm bunlara rağmen şunu belirtmeliyim ki, Büyükada gerçekten pahalı bir yer. Sahil restoranlarının ve otellerin ücretleri İstanbul içinde bir yere göre iki katına denk geliyor. Elektirkli araç ve vapur da çok pahalı. Yani cebinize sağlam bir para koymadan gitmek doğru olmayabilir. :)
