This is a photographic tour of the town of Castro, in southern Chile. There we came across some unusual dwellings called palafitos. I remembered the term from having read about it in relation to Neolithic dwellings. Palafitos were houses built on wooden stilts on the shores of lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Upon further research, I discovered that the oldest ones date back to 5000 BC in Europe, which is truly incredible. These settlements offered protection and direct access to fishing. Those early humans lived by hunting and fishing and needed to be near water. I find it difficult to imagine those people living in these houses and building them with the rudimentary technology of the time. However, what amazes me most is thinking that, thousands of years later and on another continent, this type of housing is still used, adapted to the needs of modern communities. The place I visited is in Castro, on Chiloé Island, in southern Chile. The first thing we saw was this welcome sign.
Este es un recorrido fotográfico por la localidad de Castro, en el sur de Chile. Allí nos encontramos con unas extrañas viviendas llamadas palafitos. Recordaba el término por haberlo leído en relación con las viviendas del periodo neolítico. Los palafitos eran casas construidas sobre pilotes de madera en las orillas de lagos, ríos y humedales. Al buscar más información descubrí que los más antiguos datan de 5000 años antes de Cristo en Europa, algo realmente increíble. Estos asentamientos, ofrecían protección y acceso directo a la pesca. Aquellos humanos vivían de la caza y de la pesca y necesitan estar cerca del agua. Me resulta difícil imaginar a aquellos hombres viviendo en estas casas y levantándolas con la tecnología rudimentaria de la época. Sin embargo, lo que más me asombra es pensar que, miles de años después y en otro continente, este tipo de vivienda siga siendo utilizada, adaptado a las necesidades de las comunidades actuales. El lugar que visité se encuentra en Castro, en la isla Grande de Chiloé, al sur de Chile. Lo primero que vimos fue este cartel de bienvenida.

Stilt houses are wooden structures supported by pillars over the water, designed to adapt to large tidal variations.

These stilt houses in Castro are built primarily with local, moisture-resistant native woods, notably luma for the pilings (foundations in the water) due to its high strength, and alerce or cypress for the shingles and structural cladding.

Besides the striking pillars over the water, it's the touch of color and the tasteful details that make it so appealing.

After spending a good while there taking photos, we decided to explore the area a bit before returning later. What caught our attention most was the effect of the tide: the water began to slowly recede, revealing the seabed. The ground, previously submerged, became visible. The transformation of the landscape was astonishing.
Luego de pasar un buen rato allí tomando fotos, decidimos recorrer un poco la zona para regresar más tarde. Lo que más nos llamó la atención fue el efecto de la marea: el agua comenzó a desplazarse lentamente, dejando al descubierto el fondo. El suelo, antes cubierto por el agua, apareció visible. La transformación del paisaje fue sorprendente.
Then we decided to walk along the street behind the stilt houses, a place full of surprises. We were delighted to discover the area behind the houses, with its pretty shop windows, cozy little cafes, and hotels well-equipped for tourists.
Luego decidimos caminar por la calle que se encuentra detrás de los palafitos, un lugar lleno de sorpresas. Nos sorprendió descubrir el detrás de las casas, con sus bonitos escaparates, pequeños cafés acogedores y hoteles bien preparados para el turismo.
We also came across these little dogs who were watching us from a house.
También nos encontramos con estos perritos que nos miraban desde una casa.
The houses we found were incredibly picturesque, both from the front and the back. Color is a defining feature on both sides. Each stilt house is a unique piece within the urban and natural landscape of Castro.
Las casas que encontramos resultan sumamente pintorescas, tanto por la parte delantera como por la trasera. El color es un rasgo característico en ambos lados. Cada palafito en una pieza única dentro del paisaje urbano y natural de Castro.
When I reached the end of the street, I found a place where I could climb down and observe the stilts supporting the stilt houses up close. By then, the water had receded enough to expose the base of the structures and offer a surprising view. The scene revealed a different landscape. It was like discovering the secret hidden beneath the colorful facades.
Cuando llegué al final de la calle encontré un lugar que permitía descender y observar de cerca los pilotes que sostienen los palafitos. Para entonces, el agua ya se había retirado lo suficiente, dejando al descubierto la base de las estructuras y ofreciendo una vista sorprendente. La escena revelaba un paisaje distinto. Era como descubrir el secreto oculto bajo las fachadas coloridas.
Then I returned to the main street and continued taking colorful photographs, capturing the charm of the place.

And then, upon reaching the other side of the houses, I was still amazed. The water had receded even further, almost completely exposing the ground. The scene conveyed a sense of constant transformation.
Y ya, al llegar al otro lado de las casas, no dejaba de sorprenderme. El agua se había retirado aún más, dejando al descubierto casi por completo el suelo. La escena transmitía una sensación de transformación constante.
A short while later, the scene was completely transformed once again. The seabed, previously covered by water, now displayed whimsical shapes that resembled veins. The tide had receded almost entirely, leaving only small pools and winding channels.
Un rato después, la escena volvió a transformarse por completo. El fondo, antes cubierto por el agua, mostraba ahora formas caprichosas que parecían venas. La marea se había retirado casi por completo, dejando únicamente pequeños charcos y surcos sinuosos.
I was also surprised by the landscape that stretched beyond, high above. I raised my camera and pointed the telephoto lens upwards, and there I discovered this beautiful panorama.
También me sorprendió el paisaje que se extendía más allá, en lo alto. Levanté mi cámara y apunté con el teleobjetivo hacia las alturas, y allí descubrí este bello panorama.

It reminded me a lot of a place in the state of Zulia - Venezuela where they also have these same structures over the water and they also call them palafitos.
