Who knows how the wars fought by states that established new civilizations in the past to gain their independence were won? Imagine that you are the king of an army of a thousand people. You want to win the war with the courage, morale and instructions you give to your soldiers. After each war you win, you advance in age by expanding your civilization. As a king, your name is constantly mentioned by other civilizations. You have an irresistible power. The grave of your soul you leave behind should also be magnificent, impressive and permanent. The Amintas Rock Tombs from the Lycian Period in Fethiye district also have such an effect.
While one of the tombstones carved into the rocks on the slope of a steep rock rising into the sky is dazzling in the shape of a temple, the others resemble old tombstones built inside the mountain. This is the Amintas Rock Tombs located in the Fethiye district of Muğla province. You can reach these magnificent rock tombs by coming to Kesikkapı neighborhood in about 20 minutes with your own car from Fethiye city center. Since this is a historical and cultural tour area, there is an entrance fee. We park our car in a suitable place and start our trip by paying the entrance fee of 120 TL (4 $ Dollars), determined by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, at the box office.
We start our Fethiye Amintas Rock Tombs trip by ascending the old staircase structures with approximately 150-200 steps, built neatly and symmetrically on a lush green grassy area. At the end of the stairs there is a temple tomb built in the name of the king. We see that there are two types of graves in the Gezi area. One of them is the King's tomb, which is frequently mentioned among the public, and the others are referred to as normal rock tombs. The ones located to the left of the stairs and carved into the mountain are rock tombs. At the top of the stairs is the king's tomb with a temple.
We come to the Amintas temple by walking up the many stairs among the green grass. As we get closer to the temple, it seems to get bigger in our eyes. I feel like a dwarf when I enter the temple by climbing the four-step stairs made of long old buildings in front of it.😀 In the interior of the temple, where there are two columns placed between the two entrances, there is an entrance area that reminds me of the iron gate of the castle walls. This is probably the entrance to the burial chamber. The door, made using metal workmanship and concrete stone, was skillfully placed into the rock. The meticulously crafted metal nail engravings on the door, which consists of four main panels, immediately catch my eye. A hole has been created in one of the panels. There are inscriptions written from old alphabets inside. It is dark and damp inside. The fact that it remains so magnificent until today also shows how solidly built it is.
In my previous articles, I mentioned many rock tombs located in Kaş, Kekova and Simena. We can encounter similar graves along the Mediterranean coast. The difference that distinguishes the rock tombs here from others is that they are slightly larger and wider inside. We get down from the temple, follow the narrow dirt grass path on the left at the top of the stairs, and head towards the rock tombs carved into the mountain. It almost resembles a residential area built in the middle of a steep mountain. From afar, it looks like cave houses made of stone. Although the tombs and columns here have been damaged, they have not lost anything from their majestic and magnificent appearance.
While visiting the tombstones located on the slope of a steep mountain in the south of Fethiye and facing north, when you turn back and look from the top, you can also be captivated by the magnificent view of Fethiye and the beauty of the ships floating from the sea. You can look at the roofs of the houses built among the greenery from the hill and feel the smell of the calm blue sea and the city.
Here I end our trip to the Amintas Rock Tombs, one of the most magnificent examples of the Lycian civilization on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts. Göğe yükselen dik bir kayanın yamacına, kayaları oyarak yapılan mezar taşlardan biri tapınak şeklinde göz kamaştırırken, diğerleri, dağın içine yapılan eski mezar taşlarını andırıyor. Burası, Muğla ilinin Fethiye ilçesinde yer alan Amintas Kaya Mezarlarıdır. Fethiye şehir merkezinden kendi aracınızla yaklaşık 20 dakikada, Kesikkapı mahallesine gelerek, bu görkemli kaya mezarlarına ulaşabilirsiniz. Burası tarihi ve kültürel bir gezi alanı olduğu için, girişlerde ücretlidir. Aracımızı uygun yere park edip, gişede, Kültür ve Turizm Bakanlığının belirlediği 120 TL ( 4 $ Dolar, ) giriş ücretini ödeyerek gezimize başlıyoruz.
Fethiye Amintas Kaya Mezarları gezimize, yemyeşil çimenlik bir alana düzgün ve simetrik bir şekilde yapılmış yaklaşık 150-200 basamaklı eski merdiven yapılardan çıkarak başlıyoruz. Merdivenlerinin en sonunda kral adına yapılan bir tapınak mezarı var. Gezi alanında iki tür mezarların olduğunu görüyoruz. Bunlardan biri, halk arasında da sıkça söylenen Kral mezarı, diğerleri ise, normal kaya mezarları olarak geçmektedir. Merdivenlerin solunda bulunan ve dağın içine oyularak yapılanlar kaya mezarlarıdır. Merdivenin sonunda en tepede yer alan tapınaklı kral mezarıdır.
Yeşil çimenlerin arasından çok sayıda yapılan merdivenlerden yürüyerek, Amintas tapınağına geliyoruz. Tapınağa yaklaştıkça sanki, gözümüzde daha da büyüyor. Önünde, uzun eski yapılardan yapılmış dört basamaklı merdiveni çıkarak tapınağın içine girince cüce gibi kalıyorum.😀 İki antrenin arasına konulan iki sütunun bulunduğu tapınağın iç kısmında kale surlarının demir kapısını anımsatan bir giriş alanı var. Muhtemelen burası mezar odasının girişi oluyor. Metal işçilik ve beton taş kullanılarak yapılan kapıyı kayaya ustalıkla yerleştirmişler. Dört ana panelden oluşan kapı üzerinde titizlikle işlenmiş metal çivi kazıları da hemen gözüme çarpıyor. Panellerin birinde bir delik oluşturulmuş. İçeride eski alfabelerden yazılmış yazılar var. İçi karanlık ve rutubetlidir. Günümüze kadar böyle ihtişamlı görünmesi ne kadar sağlam yapıldığını da gösteriyor.
Önceki yazılarımda, Kaş, Kekova ve Simena taraflarında yer alan bir çok kaya mezarlarından bahsetmiştim. Akdeniz kıyılarında buna benzer mezarlarla karşılaşabiliyoruz. Buradaki kaya mezarlarını diğerlerinden ayıran fark, biraz daha büyük ve içinin daha geniş olmasıdır. Tapınaktan inip, merdivenlerin başlarında sol tarafta, dar toprak çimen yolundan ilerleyerek dağın içine oyularak yapılmış kaya mezarlarına doru yöneliyoruz. Adeta, dik bir dağın ortasına kurulmuş bir yerleşim alanını andırıyor. Uzaktan bakıldığında, taştan yapılmış mağara evlerine benziyor. Buradaki mezar ve sütunlar her ne kadar zarar görmüş olsa da heybetli ve görkemli görüntüsünden bir şey kaybetmemiş.
Fethiye'nin güneyinde bulunan ve kuzeye bakan dik bir dağın yamacına konumlandırılan mezar taşlarını gezerken, arkanızı dönüp, tepeden baktığınızda, Fethiye'nin muhteşem manzarasını ve denizden yüzen gemilerin güzelliğine de kapılabilirsiniz. Tepeden yeşilliklerin arasına kurulan evlerin çatılarını bakıp, sakince duran masmavi denizin ve şehrin kokusunu da hissedebilirsiniz.
Akdeniz ve Ege kıyılarında Likya uygarlığının en görkemli örneklerinden biri olan, Amintas Kaya mezarları gezimizi burada bitiriyorum.
