I return to Route 40 after visiting the glaciers of Lago Argentino and passing by Rio Gallegos and take the final part of Route 40. The air is getting colder and colder. The concept of Patagonia is present in every stretch I travel. The Patagonian steppe is omnipresent.
The name of Patagonia is due to Hernando de Magallanes who gave that name to the native Indians who inhabited these lands when he noticed the large footprints they left behind.
Between reality and legend it seems that the first natives found were taller than the average European and therefore their footprints were bigger, comparing them with "Patagón", the name of a giant, a very popular character in some novels of the time.
The Patagonian Giant appears in the novel Primaleon published in 1512 20 years after the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus.
It should not be forgotten that the Indians protected their feet from the cold and the weather with skins, which is why the footprints they left were so big.
Nowadays most of the Patagonian Indians, direct descendants of those found by the European conquerors and explorers, live in reserves or work on estancias.
The largest community is the Mapuche, with some 35,000 people, and it is a source of numerous conflicts as they constantly claim the lands that were usurped by the whites without any rights.
I take the route south to reach Cabo Virgenes. It is a tiring journey and it takes me longer than expected. It is an oil area.
Argentina has six oil areas. This is the only one you can see from Route 40.
I see several foxes, skunks, rheas watching curiously as the traveller passes by, armadillos making holes in the ground, martinetas - a bird bigger than a partridge with a topknot on its head - and the master of the Patagonian steppe: the inevitable guanaco everywhere.
The guanaco's coat is superior to cashmere or alpaca. And for this reason they are hunted without limit or mercy. Ignoring its value for the Patagonian ecosystem.
They breed three times more than sheep, live three times as long and are more adapted to the hard Patagonian soil as the lower part of their legs is padded and thus they protect themselves better by impacting less hard on the ground compared to sheep and cow hooves.
On the other hand, they do not pull up the grass like sheep but cut it, thus allowing the plants to continue living and producing less desertification.
On the other hand, they do not need to be vaccinated against anything.
The state of the road makes me a little impatient. But finally the sea appears.
This part of the Atlantic Ocean is home to the blue right whale, seals, penguins, elephant seals, killer whales and dolphins
Finally I arrive at Cape Virgins. End of my adventure. Km 0 of Route 40 for those who start the journey from the south to the north. There is a bar and a military base. Created in 1904, the Faro Virgenes is 26 metres high and marks the entrance to the Strait of Magellan.
It takes its name because it was discovered in the year 1520, the 21st of October, the day of celebration of the 11,000 virgins according to the Catholic Church's worship that rescues a 15th century medieval legend.
A sign indicates: HERE BEGINS THE NATIONAL ROUTE 40.
And it also inidates the other extreme point: LA QUIACA at 5,080 kms, to which we can add several more that I have passed through points, places and landscapes of supernatural beauty throughout the day.
17 unique, unforgettable stages.
It is impossible not to feel happy, ecstatic, victorious. Many travellers -like me- will have fulfilled their dream.
Others will have embraced, laughed and cried at the same time.
I spend some time by the sign thinking about the road from La Quiaca to here.
The bureaucratic problems of customs, the familiar people, the nights sleeping under the open sky.
And suddenly I come to a conclusion: the solitude of the steppe is the same as it was so many centuries ago.
Here at km 0 of Route 40 a journey ends that I will never forget.
Much is left out of these stories. It is up to you to fill these gaps.

Retomo la ruta 40 después de haber visitado los glaciares del Lago Argentino y paso por Rio Gallegos y encaro la parte final de la Ruta 40. El aire es cada vez más frío. El concepto de Patagonia está presente en cada tramo que recorro. La estepa patagónica es omnipresente.
El nombre de Patagonia se debe a Hernando de Magallanes quien dio ese nombre a los indígenas nativos que habitaban estas tierras al notar las grandes huellas que dejaban al pasar.
Entre realidad y leyenda parece ser que los primeros indígenas encontrados eran de una estatura superior a la media de los europeos y por lo tanto la huella de sus pies era más grande, comparándolos con “Patagón”, el nombre de un gigante, personaje muy popular en unas novelas de la época.
El Gigante Patagón aparece en la novela Primaleón publicada en el año 1512 20 a4os más tarde del descubrimiento de América por Cristóbal Colón.
No hay que olvidar que los indígenas protegían sus pies del frío y de las inclemencias del tiempo con pieles, razón por la cuál las huellas que dejaban eran muy grandes.
En nuestros dias la mayor parte de los indígenas patagónicos, descendientes directos de aquellos encontrados por los conquistadores y exploradores europeos, vive en reservas o trabajan en estancias.
La comunidad más numerosa es la de los mapuches, con unas 35.000 personas y es fuente de numerosos conflictos ya que constantemente reclaman las tierras que fueron usurpadas por los blancos sin ningún derecho.
Tomo la ruta hacia el sur para llegar a Cabo Vírgenes. Es un viaje agotador y me lleva más tiempo del esperado. Es una zona petrolera.
Argentina tiene seis zonas petroleras. esta es la única que se ve desde la Ruta 40.
Veo a varios zorros, zorrinos, ñandúes observando curiosos el paso del viajero, armadillos haciendo agujeros en la tierra, martinetas -ago más grande que las perdices y con un copete arriba de la cabeza y al amo de la estepa patagónica: el infaltable guanaco por todos lados.
El pelaje del guanaco es superior al cachemir o la alpaca. Y por este motivo son perseguidos y cazados sin límite ni piedad alguna. Ignorando su valor para el ecosistema patagónico.
Crían tres veces más que las ovejas, viven el triple de años y estén más adaptados al duro suelo patagónico ya que la parte inferior de las patas es acolchada y de esta manera se protegen mejor impactando menos duramente en el suelo en comparación con el caso de las pezuñas de las ovejas y las vacas.
Por otro lado no arrancan el pasto como las ovejas sino que los cortan permitiendo de esta manera a las plantas de seguir viviendo y produciendo menos desertificación.
Por otro lado no hay que vacunarlos contra nada.
El estado de la ruta me impacienta un poco. Pero finalmente aparece el mar.
Esta parte del Océano Atlántico es el hogar de la ballena franca azul, de focas, pinguinos, elefantes marinos, orcas y delfines
Finalmente llego al Cabo Vírgenes. Fin de mi aventura. Km 0 de la Ruta 40 para quien inicia el recorrido desde el sur hacia el norte. Hay un bar y una base militar. Creado en 1904 el Faro Vírgenes tiene 26 metros de alto y marca la entrada al Estrecho de Magallanes.
Lleva su nombre porque fue descubierto en el año 1520, el dia 21 de octubre dia de celebración de las 11.000 vírgenes según el culto de la iglesia católica que rescata una leyenda miedieval del siglo XV.
Un cartel indica: AQUI COMIENZA LA RUTA NACIONAL 40.
Y también indica el otro punto extremo: LA QUIACA a 5.080 kms, a los cuáles se agregan varios más que he pasado recorriendo puntos, lugares y paisajes de una belleza sobrenatural a lo largo del jornada.
17 etapas únicas, inolvidables.
Es imposible no sentirse feliz, extasiado, victorioso. Muchos viajeros -como yo- habrán cumplido su sueño.
Otros se habrán abrazado, reído y llorado a la vez.
Paso un buen rato junto al letrero pensando en el camino recorrido desde La Quiaca hasta acá.
Los problemas burocráticos de la aduana, la gente conocida, las noches durmiendo a cielo abierto.
Y de repente llego a una conclusión: la soledad de la estepa es la misma de hace tantos siglos.
Aquí en el km 0 de la Ruta 40 termina un viaje que nunca olvidaré.
Mucho queda por fuera de estos relatos. Les queda a Uds. llenar esos vacíos.
