If you were to ask me about the jewel of northeastern Slovakia that is worth visiting, I would tell you that there are more, but one of them is the town of Bardejov. I definitely consider this historic city, registered on the list of cultural and natural heritage of UNESCO, to be a jewel and I recommend it to everyone to visit. It definitely has a lot to offer history lovers in particular, and they will not be bored.
We park the car near the city center, directly under the remains of the walls that once surrounded and protected the city. It's a nice warm May day and I'm looking forward to taking some nice photos here and learning something new. We go up the stairs through the entrance in the walls to the city center. Through a small alley, we arrive at the square, which took my breath away right from the start. Simply beautiful! I didn't wait long and press the shutter of my camera. One photo follows another.
The first written mention of the town of Bardejov comes from 1241. At that time, however, Bardejov was already a developed populated town. Later, even more people settled in and around the city, crafts and trade developed. Markets were held regularly in the city, and from 1352 an eight-day fair could be held in the city.
The city was fortified with massive walls, in front of which was a moat. A few years later, the city acquired the right of way. The turning point in its history was the year 1376, when King Ludovít I elevated it to a free royal city. The city was a center of culture and education. Thanks to the development of trade and crafts, the city flourished and expanded, and at that time a number of secular and ecclesiastical buildings were built here.
In the photo you can see the landmark of the city, which is the Church of St. Aegis. It is the rarest medieval monument in Bardejov, which was built during the city's boom.
We go inside and look at the beautiful decoration of this rare basilica.
As they say, the most beautiful view of the city is always from the top, so we climb the spiral stairs slowly up the church tower. And it's true. From a height there is a completely different view of the city. However, some of us are afraid of heights and prefer not to get too close to the edge and enjoy the view from a safe distance.
We, who are not afraid, come to the edge and take pictures of this beauty. The rectangular square is lined with bourgeois houses.
They bear the hallmarks of Gothic and Renaissance architecture.
Another important monument and example of the benefit of the city is the city hall, which was built in the years 1505 - 1509. It is lined with stone sculptures. One of them shows a boy with his ass sticking out. According to the rumor, the boy's butt is pointing at the mayor's house. He did not pay the workers for their work, so in one night they installed this sculpture at the town hall.
An important building that I photographed from the church tower is the Franciscan church with the church. This building caught my attention at first glance. It's probably because it looks old.
As is usual, the boom period was replaced by a worse period. After the accession of the Luxembourgers to the Hungarian throne, the good relations between Hungary and Poland ended. Bardejov, which was located close to the border with Poland, benefited from their former mutual trade. In 1402-1403, it even fell into Polish hands. To prevent this from happening again, it was necessary to strengthen the defense of the city. The city tower, which served as a gate to the city, was turned into a castle that had its own military garrison.
In the 17th century, a wave of anti-Habsburg uprisings hit the city. The war and natural calamities added to it, such as the plague, caused the decline of the city. The city never recovered from this decline.
A more significant restoration of the city took place only after the Second World War. We can also find traces of her in the city. In addition to the monument, this cannon is also a memorial to her. Today it is only a tourist attraction, but it was once a formidable weapon.
Industry, which began to be built in the city after the Second World War, lifted the city out of poverty. The medieval buildings and walls have been repaired, and the history and character of the city now attracts many tourists.
The evening walk around the city is pleasant and we come to a singing fountain in a small park in the center of the city. It offers a nice view of the church and the remains of the walls. We sit down on the bench. Here we can gain new strength and energy to further explore the city and surroundings of Bardejov.

Ak by ste sa ma pýtali na klenot severovýchodného Slovenska ktorý sa oplatí navštíviť tak by som vám povedal že je ich viac, no jedným z nich je mesto Bardejov. Toto historické mesto, zapísané na zozname kultúrneho a prírodného dedičstva UNESCO za klenot rozhodne považujem a odporúčam ho navštíviť všetkým. Najmä milovníkom histórie má rozhodne čo ponúknuť a nudiť sa v ňom nebudú.
Auto parkujeme neďaleko centra mesta, priamo pod zvyškami hradieb ktoré toto mesto kedysi celé obklopovali a poskytovali mu ochranu. Je pekný teplý májový deň a ja sa teším ako si tu nafotím zopár pekných fotografií a niečo nové sa dozviem. Po schodoch prechádzame cez vchod v hradbách do centra mesta. Neveľkou uličkou prichádzame na námestie, ktoré mi hneď na začiatku vyrazilo dych. Jednoducho nádhera! Nečakal som dlho a stláčam spúšť môjho fotoaparátu. Jedna fotografia strieda druhú.
Prvá písomná zmienka o meste Bardejov pochádza z roku 1241. V tom čase však už bol Bardejov rozvinuté osídlené mesto. Neskôr sa v okolí mesta a v meste usídlilo ešte viacej ľudí, rozvíjali sa remeslá a obchod. V meste sa pravidelne konali trhy a od roku 1352 sa mohol v meste konať osemdňový jarmok.
Mesto bolo opevnené mohutnými hradbami pred ktorými bola priekopa. O niekoľko rokov získalo mesto hrdelné právo. Prelomovým rokom v jeho histórii bol rok 1376 kedy ho kráľ Ľudovít I. povýšil na slobodné kráľovské mesto. Mesto bolo centrom kultúry a vzdelanosti. Vďaka rozvoju obchodu a remesiel mesto prekvitalo, rozširovalo sa a v tom čase tu vzniklo množstvo svetských a cirkevných stavieb.
Na fotke môžete vidieť dominantu mesta a tou je Kostol sv. Egídia. Je to najvzácnejšia stredoveká pamiatka v Bardejove, ktorú vybudovali za čias rozmachu mesta.
Vchádzame dnu a obzeráme si peknú výzdobu tejto vzácnej baziliky.
Ako sa hovorí, najkrajší pohľad na mesto je vždy z vrchu a tak točivými schodmi stúpame po kostolnej veži pomaly hore. A je to pravda. Z výšky je na mesto úplne iný pohľad. Niektorí z nás sa však výšky boja a radšej sa k okraju veľmi nepribližujú a výhľad si vychutnávajú z bezpečnej vzdialenosti.
My čo sa nebojíme, prichádzame k okraju a fotíme si túto nádheru. Obdĺžnikové námestie je lemované meštiackymi domami.
Tie nesú znaky gotickej a renesančnej architektúry.
Ďalšou významnou pamiatkou a ukážkou prospechu mesta je mestská radnica, ktorú postavili v rokoch 1505 - 1509. Je lemovaná kamennými plastikami. Na jednej z nich je chlapec s vystrčeným zadkom. Podľa povesti mieri zadok chlapca na dom richtára. Ten robotníkom za ich prácu nezaplatil a tak v jednu noc na radnicu osadili túto plastiku.
Významnou stavbou, ktorú som si odfotografoval z kostolnej veže je františkánsky kostol s kostolom. Už na prvý pohľad ma táto stavba upútala. Je to asi tým, že pôsobí staro.
Ako to už býva zvykom obdobie rozmachu vystriedalo horšie obdobie. Po nastúpení Luxemburgovcov na uhorský trón sa dobré vzťahy medzi Uhorskom a Poľskom skončili. Z ich niekdajšieho vzájomného obchodu profitoval predovšetkým Bardejov, ktorý sa nachádzal blízko hraníc s Poľskom. V roku 1402 – 1403 sa dokonca dostal po poľských rúk. Aby sa to neopakovalo bolo nutné posilniť obranu mesta. Mestskú vežu ktorá slúžila ako brána do mesta zmenili na hrad ktorý mal vlastnú vojenskú posádku.
V 17. storočí zasiahla mesto vlna protihabsburgských povstaní. Vojna a k nej sa pridali živelné pohromy, ako napríklad mor spôsobili úpadok mesto. Z tohto úpadku sa mesto už nikdy nespamätalo.
Výraznejšia obnova mesta sa uskutočnila až po druhej svetovej vojne. Stopy po nej v meste nájdeme tiež. Spomienkou na ňu je okrem pamätníka aj toto delo. Dnes predstavuje už len turistickú atrakciu, no niekedy predstavovalo hrozivú zbraň.
Mesto z biedy vytrhol priemysle, ktorý sa v meste začal budovať po druhej svetovej vojne. Stredoveké budovy a hradby sa opravili a história a charakter mesta v súčasnosti láka množstvo turistov.
Večerná prechádzka po meste je príjemná a my prichádzame až k spievajúcej fontáne v malom parku v centre mesta. Je z nej pekný pohľad na kostol a zvyšky hradieb. Sadáme si na lavičku. Tu môžeme nabrať nové sily a energiu do ďalšieho spoznávania mesta a okolia Bardejova.

Tak to ste tam boli len pár týždňov po nás. Moja teta žije v Bardejove a boli sme ju navštíviť v druhej polovici Apríla. Tiež sme boli chvíľu v meste, ale bolo krásne počasie, tak sme vyšli hore na kalváriu a potom sme došli až do záhradkárskej oblasti pár kilometrov za Bardejovom. Ak ešte pôjdeš do Bardejova, tak tam zájdi, keďže sú odtiaľ super výhľady na mesto a keď je pekné počasie aj na Tatry.

Ahoj, ďakujem za tip, možno to aj využijem lebo do Bardejova sa ešte chystám. My sme tam boli 6-7 máj tak to sme sa naozaj len tesne minuli. Na kalvariu sme tiež vybehli, o tom budem ešte tiež písať lebo tá cesta a jeden z náhrobných kameňov čo sú tam sa mi veľmi pacil :)... ale nestihli sme skanzen a ten chcem vidiet :)... Poskulujem nad výletom do Svidnika, drevené kostolíky, údolie smrti tak v rámci toho by som sa ešte chcel zastaviť.
