Many people living in this same community of Spain have never heard of The Stone Monastery. Some time ago some friends of mine who come to Spain every summer to do mountaineering trips asked me about a place in the province where I live in Zaragoza, of which they could not remember the name.
One of them described it to me in this way; A natural site with several beautiful waterfalls, of which, one had a figure in the shape of a horse's tail, he told me about a natural lake that crossed the entire mountain with perfectly placed paths to make a good tour and enjoy the water on your face and I said to myself, but is it that near the city of Zaragoza we have such a unique place? Well, I had a pending task and I had to get that place. Seeing some ideas on the internet I found the place and it is that about two hours from where I live, near the town of Calatayud is this place, I began to read and see the wonderful landscapes of this Natural Park called The Stone Monastery, which has also been declared a Historical and Cultural Monument and National Scenic Spot.

Well, that was enough to cheer me up and start a new adventure, and I must confess that these are the ones I like the most, places close, beautiful, inexpensive and especially without much to plan. I have grabbed my things, I go to the bus station and immediately embark on the road to enjoy a Saturday out of the usual monotony of everyday life.
I arrived at the site, they explain to me at the ticket office that the place is divided into 2 tours. One is the visit of a monastery in ruins and then behind we would find the park as if it were his garden and this is the one I actually had as a goal to know. Well, I decided to do both tours, besides I had time available and the difference to pay was only 1 EUR, it is worth noting that the entrance to the park has a value of 16.50 EUR.

In this first part we found several old buildings, some abandoned rooms, a number of very colorful columns, the ruins of a church that was at some point and the chapel of San Inocencio that if it was preserved to date. At the end of this tour among ruins, we find a set of signs and the way they have it coupled gives you the assurance that we will not miss any point of interest, the organization of waterfalls, caves, lakes and viewpoints are millimetrically calculated to enjoy the most breathtaking views of this place full of color.

We entered a kind of forest with gigantic and very green trees that give a shade and a coolness in the face quite nice, which encourages us to take a nap and some snacks, but no, we will leave that for the end, We continue advancing and we find one of the first waterfalls called the Bath of Diana and in turn a wonderful lake that at some times is full of ducks, this time we were not fortunate to see it this way, and at this point the place begins to fall in love but it is only a preview of all the surprises that we will find during the tour.
Following the directions on the map, I then find the Trinidad Waterfall, very beautiful, with three waterfalls and rocks formed symmetrically and in which they have developed a viewpoint perfectly designed to take pictures, from here we crossed a small wooden bridge and arrived at the impressive La Caprichosa Waterfall, which has a water power, and is that, being quite far away and splashes you with its water giving that feeling of freshness and freedom. I have always thought that the water of the rivers has a very powerful energy. Continuing with the tour, I notice on the signs that I am heading towards the Iris waterfall and the grotto of the same name (it is like a mountain with a natural cavity that forms between the stones, giving us the feeling of being inside a cave).

I found this cave incredible, I consider it one of the most spectacular attractions of this entire tour so far, besides being in a high area gave us a very photographic views of the park. During the tour through these caves, I have found several wooden stairs, some narrow areas and others a little wide, at certain points simulated a series of natural windows overlooking the great Horsetail waterfall , which was seen from above and further on there is a path which when crossing under the waterfall, you feel a gentle rain of water that splashed this waterfall.

When you think you can not see anything more impressive, we continue along the same path to the lower part of the mountain and crossing a wooden bridge without expectations of seeing anything in particular, we see that we arrived at the Mirror Lake, and it is literally a huge natural mirror, and this multiplies all our impressions and really is that it leaves us open-mouthed.
The water of this lake is like a huge mirror, the truth is that it makes you perceive a double optical illusion. On the one hand, we look at the entire view of the park, its waterfalls and mountains creating a parallel world because if we look more closely we see that inside the lake there is a huge amount of fish and marine flowers. I confess that I got close enough to touch the water to realize that this was completely real.

Behind the lake there was a very imposing rock formation called Devil's Rock, Reading a sign next to the lake tells a legend that in this place the devil tempted a monk to fall in love with a girl and this in turn rejects her on several occasions being that the girl committed suicide for never being able to achieve it and the devil seeing that he did not win this battle threw a giant stone against this monastery to destroy it and the angels diverted it so that it did not end with that place and there it is until now, well I do not know, I would not think that a natural park had such a story to tell.
Without a doubt I can tell you that The Stone Monastery fills your soul with an indescribable energy, this place is full of corners with scenarios formed exclusively for the enjoyment of a friendly walk, from my point of view is a tour that I advise you ... Do not miss it!
Muchas son las personas que viviendo en esta misma comunidad de España no han escuchado hablar del Monasterio de Piedra. Hace algún tiempo unas amistades que vienen mucho a realizar recorridos de montañismo a España cada verano me preguntaron por un sitio en la provincia donde vivo en Zaragoza de la cual no recordaban su nombre.
Uno de ellos me lo describía de esta manera; Un sitio natural con varias y hermosas cascadas, de las cuales, una tenía figura en forma de cola de caballo, me comentaba de un lago natural que atravesaba toda la montaña con unas caminerías perfectamente colocadas para realizar un buen recorrido y disfrutar del agua sobre tu cara y yo me decía, ¿ Pero es que cerca de la Ciudad de Zaragoza tenemos un lugar tan singular ? Pues nada tenia tarea pendiente y debía conseguir ese lugar. Viendo algunas ideas por internet ubique con el sitio y es que a unas dos horas de donde vivo, cerca de la población de Calatayud esta este lugar, comencé a leer y ver los maravillosos paisajes de este Parque Natural llamado El Monasterio de Piedra, que, además ha sido declarado como Monumento Histórico y Cultural y Paraje pintoresco Nacional.

Pues nada, ya con esos datos eran suficiente para animarme y armar una nueva aventura, que además debo confesarles que estas son las que más me gustan, lugares cercanos, bonitos, económicos y especialmente sin mucho que planificar. He agarrado mis cosas, me voy a la estación de autobuses e inmediatamente embarco a la carretera para disfrutar de un sábado fuera de la monotonía habitual del día a día.
He llegado al sitio, me explican en la taquilla que el lugar se divide en 2 recorridos. Uno es la visita de un monasterio en ruinas y luego detrás nos encontraríamos con el parque como si fuese su jardín y este es el que en realidad tenía como meta conocer. Pues bueno decidí realizar ambos recorridos, además tenia tiempo disponible y la diferencia para abonar era solo 1 EUR, vale destacar que la entrada al parque tiene un valor de 16,50 EUR.

En esta primera parte nos encontramos con varias edificaciones antiguas, algunas habitaciones abandonadas, una cantidad de columnas muy vistosas, las ruinas de alguna iglesia que estuvo en algún momento y la capilla de San Inocencio que si se conservaba a la fecha. Al culminar este recorrido entre ruinas, nos encontramos con un conjunto de señalizaciones y es que la forma en que lo tienen acoplado te da la seguridad que no nos perderemos ningún punto de interés, la organización de las cascadas, grutas, lagos y miradores están milimétricamente calculado para que disfrutemos de las vistas mas impresionantes de este lugar lleno de color.

Entramos a una especie de bosques con arboles gigantescos y muy verdes que dan una sombra y un frescor en la cara bastante agradable, lo que nos incita a echar una siesta y unos bocadillos , pero no, ya eso lo dejaremos para el final, seguimos avanzando y encontramos una de las primeras cascadas llamada el Baño de Diana y a su vez un lago maravillosos que en algunas épocas esta lleno de patos, esta vez no fue la fortuna de verlo así, ya en este punto el lugar nos empieza a enamorar pero no es mas que un adelanto de todas las sorpresas que nos encontraremos durante el recorrido.
Siguiendo las indicaciones del mapa, me encuentro luego con la Cascada Trinidad, muy preciosa, con tres caídas de agua y rocas formados simétricamente y en la que han elaborado un mirador diseñado perfectamente para tomarnos fotografías, de acá atravesamos un pequeño puente de madera y llegamos a la impresiónate, Cascada La Caprichosa, que tiene una potencia de agua, y es que, estando bastante lejos ya te salpica con su agua dando esa sensación de frescura y libertad. Siempre he pensado que el agua de los ríos tiene una energía muy potente. Continuando con el recorrido, observo en las señalizaciones que voy en sentido hacia la Cascada Iris y la gruta del mismo nombre (es como una montaña con una cavidad natural que se forma entre las piedras, dándonos la sensación de estar dentro de una cueva).

Esta gruta me pareció increíble, considero es uno de los atractivos más espectaculares de todo este recorrido hasta el momento, además que al estar en una zona alta nos daba unas vistas del parque muy fotografiables. Durante el recorrido atravesando estas cavernas, me he encontrado con varias escaleras de maderas, algunas zonas estrechas y otras un poco amplias, en ciertos puntos simulaba una serie de ventanas naturales con vistas a la gran Cascada Cola de Caballo, la cual se veía desde arriba y más adelante hay un camino la cual al cruzar por debajo de la cascada, se siente una suave lluvia de agua que salpicaba esta cascada.

Ya cuando crees que no puedes ver más nada impresionante, seguimos por el mismo sendero hacia la parte más baja de la montaña y al cruzar un puente de madera sin expectativas de ver algo en particular pues vemos que llegamos al Lago del Espejo, y literalmente es un espejo natural enorme, ya esto multiplica todas nuestras impresiones y en realidad es que nos deja boca abiertos.
El agua de este lago es como un inmenso espejo, la verdad es que te hace percibir una ilusión óptica doble. Por un lado, miramos toda la vista del parque, sus cascadas y montañas creando un mundo paralelo ya que si observamos mas al detalle observamos que dentro del lago hay una cantidad enorme de peces y flores marinas. Vaya que les confieso que me acerque a tocar el agua para darme cuenta de que esto era completamente real.

Detrás del lago había una formación rocosa muy imponente y esta es llamada La Peña del Diablo , leyendo una letrero al lado del lago cuenta una leyenda que en este lugar el diablo tentaba a un monje para se dejara enamorar de una chica y este a su vez la rechaza en varias oportunidades siendo que la chica se suicidara por nunca poder lograrlo y el diablo al ver que no ganaba esta batalla lanzo una piedra gigante contra este monasterio para destruirlo y los ángeles la desviaron para que no acabara con ese lugar y allí se encuentra hasta los momentos, pues no se , no iba a pensar que un parque natural tuviese semejante historia por contar.
Sin duda puedo decirte que el Monasterio de Piedra te llena el alma de una energía indescriptible, este lugar está lleno de rincones con unos escenarios formados exclusivamente para el disfrute de una amigable caminata, de mi punto de vista es un recorrido que les aconsejo que… ¡ No te lo pierdas !

Oye que bellisimo lugar, me encanto, que hermosos, me agrada bastante, que placer ver toda esta arquitectura, me imagino que a medida que caminabas escuchabas el agua, espero que tengas muchas experiencias así.
Si e realidad lo que mas te cautiva del lugar es que a medida que vas caminando escuchas el sonido fuerte del agua y a su vez entre la brisa y la potencia de las cascadas salta muchas gotas sobre ti, la verdad que está muy bien ello. Es una experiencia recomendada . Gracias

Nice waterfalls... It's a great place for camping
Yes the waterfalls are spectacular, being a protected site camping is not allowed, much less bathing in the lakes, but the simple fact of touring it is well worth the experience. Inside there is a hotel that is very nice.

Te quiero agradecer y felicitar por el trabajo impecable de compartir tu aventura y pasearnos por estos lugares memorables y que son patrimonio cultural de la provincia de Zaragoza. Me gustó tu forma de llevar cada estación durante el recorrido. Por todo lo que comentas me imagino que pasaste horas y muchas gracias por compartir. Se ve que lo disfrutaste.
Hola, que bueno que lo haz disfrutado, particularmente me tome unas 4 horas y media en realizarlo , pero es que iba muy lento , disfrutando y tomando fotos, sin embargo en unas 2 horas es suficiente para recorrerlo

Hay muchos pueblitos por Aragón con paisajes así, algunos declarados como los más bonitos de España. Lástima no tener coche para ir... Habrá que convencer a @vonjerico a ver si se hace con uno y podemos visitar más lugares, pero esta vez alguno mejor señalizado y sin perdernos😋.
Si hay magdalenas de camino pues mejor xD
Bueno bueno la inflación también afecta a los parques nacionales. Pero nada el precio de la entrada verdaderamente esta muy bien pagado. Ya iremos coordinando si hacemos alguna escapada cercana.
