Hello dear community! On this occasion I invite you to join me on a virtual tour of one of the most emblematic engineering works, the ''Malecón de La Habana''. It is impossible to talk about the Cuban capital without mentioning the Malecón, as it is one of the symbols that identify Havana. Its construction was intended to protect the city from the waves and at the same time to function as a promenade for the delight of both locals and foreigners, offering beautiful panoramic views of the city and its sea. It has also been a platform for political acts, demonstrations as well as cultural activities. It is a common meeting point for friends and lovers.
The construction of the Malecon dates back to 1901 during the period of the American intervention in Cuba. Its execution was carried out in several stages throughout its history. Before its construction, in the coastal area it currently occupies, there was only a reef coast where the families of the time went to bathe. A little further west in the area currently occupied by the Vedado neighbourhood there was only an area of lush and impenetrable coastal vegetation known as ''Monte Vedado''. The Malecón stretches along 8 km of coastline from the ''Castillo de la Punta'' in the east to the ''Boca de la Chorrera'' in the west.
The Malecón is characterised by the avenue of the same name made up of six lanes along which we can stroll peacefully along a wide pavement separated from the sea by a sturdy reinforced concrete wall approximately one metre wide. In the image below we can see the beginning of the Malecón next to the fortress of the Castillo de la Punta in front of the Morro, at the entrance to the bay.

Along its route, we can observe how in certain sectors the wall of the Malecón is preceded by a strip of reefs with pointed dogtooths that act as breakwaters, dissipating the energy of the strong waves that commonly exist here. In addition, it is curious to observe in its interior a series of pools or artificial pools where people (mainly the younger ones) escape from the sweltering summer heat.
You can see how on the day I took these pictures the sea was very calm giving the appearance of a huge lake, this surprised me because I am used to seeing the Malecon with its impetuous swell characteristic of the waters of the Strait of Florida.
On our walk along the Malecón we will come across interesting architectural works, some of which are very peculiar, such as a building that stands out for the design of its balconies in the form of sarcophagi placed one on top of the other. It turns out that this building has a sad history. According to the story, the architect's son, when he was about to turn fifteen, drowned in the waters of the Havana Malecon, and his sadness and pain were so great that he ordered the construction of a building with 14 coffin-shaped balconies, coinciding with the age of his son when he died, giving the building a sad façade, although it is said that the interior of the building is spacious and beautiful horizontal properties.
Further on, we find an imposing sculptural ensemble in memory of Antonio Maceo, one of the main liberators of the nation in the 19th century. It is a large park 400 m long by 60 m wide. It was inaugurated in May 1916. The monument is a granite platform on which are placed bronze figures allegorical to the life of the generalissimo.
At the intersection of Galeano and Malecón streets, a metal sculpture entitled ''La Primavera'' (Spring) was designed by the sculptor Rafael Miranda and placed in its current location in 2015. Eight metres high and two metres wide, it was made of iron sheets welded together. It depicts a woman whose gaze is lost in the vast ocean. Her head is covered with a multitude of butterflies, the national flower of Cuba. This work of art is an allegory for the women of the island. Unfortunately, due to its proximity to the sea, it requires systematic maintenance as a result of the intense corrosion to which it is exposed.
At the intersection with the famous 23rd Street we find the beautiful Hotel Nacional de Cuba, which was founded in 1930. Its architecture combines eclectic, neoclassical, neocolonial and art deco styles. Unfortunately the position of the sun at the time of the photograph did not allow it to be seen in all its splendour.

La construcción del Malecón data del año 1901 en pleno período de la intervención norteamericana en Cuba. Su ejecución se llevó a cabo en varias etapas a lo largo de su historia. Antes de su construcción, en la zona litoral que actualmente ocupa sólo existía una costa arrecifal a donde iban a bañarse las familias de la época. Un poco más hacia el oeste en la zona que actualmente ocupa la barriada del Vedado solo existía un área de exuberante e impenetrable vegetación costera conocida como el ´´Monte Vedado´´. El Malecón se extiende a lo largo de 8 Km de costa desde el ´´Castillo de la Punta´´ al Este hasta la ´´Boca de la Chorrera´´ al oeste.
El Malecón, se caracteriza por la avenida del mismo nombre constituida por seis carriles junto a la cual, podemos pasear tranquilamente por una amplia acera separada del mar por un robusto muro de hormigón armado de 1m de ancho aproximadamente.
En la imagen inferior podemos ver el inicio del Malecón junto a la fortaleza del Castillo de la Punta frente al Morro, a la entrada de la bahía.

A lo largo de su trayecto, podemos observar como en determinados sectores el muro del Malecón se encuentra antecedido por una franja de arrecifes con puntiagudos dientes de perro que actúan a modo de rompeolas, disipando la energía del fuerte oleaje que comúnmente existe aquí. Además, es curioso observar en su interior una serie de pocetas o piscinas artificiales en donde, las personas (principalmente los más jóvenes) escapan del sofocante calor estival.
Pueden ver como el día que tome estas imágenes el mar estaba muy calmado dando la apariencia de un inmenso lago, esto me sorprendió porque estoy acostumbrado a ver al Malecón con su impetuoso oleaje característico de las aguas del Estrecho de La Florida.
En nuestro recorrido por el Malecón nos encontraremos con interesantes obras arquitectónicas algunas tan peculiares como es el caso de una edificación que llama la atención por el diseño de sus balcones en forma de sarcófagos colocados uno encima del otro. Resulta ser que este edificio encierra una triste historia. Según se cuenta, el hijo del arquitecto cuando estuvo a punto de cumplir los quince años se ahogó en las aguas del malecón habanero y fue tanta la tristeza y dolor que mandó a construir un edificio con 14 balcones en forma de ataúd coincidiendo con la edad de su hijo al fallecer; confiriéndole una triste fachada al edificio, aunque se cuenta que en su interior constituyen amplios y hermosas propiedades horizontales.
Mas adelante, nos encontramos con un imponente conjunto escultórico en memoria a Antonio Maceo uno de los principales libertadores de la nación en el siglo 19. Constituye un amplio parque de 400 m de largo por 60 de ancho. Inaugurado en mayo de 1916. El monumento presente allí constituye una plataforma de granito en la que se ubican figuras de bronces alegóricas a la vida del generalísimo.
