A Perfect Day: Swansea Surf and Drive Down to Dunalley πŸ„πŸ„

in Worldmappin β€’ 3 years ago (edited)

'It's such a perfect day - I'm glad I spent it with you' - Lou Reed

By 'you', I mean 'me' - I bloody well enjoy my own company. I can go where I want without any discussions or compromise, and follow my own whim and fancy. And sometimes that's so much fun I just want to BURST.

Today was such a day. Clear blue skies and hardly a breath of wind, and perfect off shore. I'd got up before dawn to witness a cracking sunrise at Freycinet (see previous post) and decided to head down along the coast to see if I could find a surf. It was just a feeling I had - there HAD to be a wave somewhere today.

First of all, I spotted this cheeky little right off the boat ramp. There was a guy on a longboard surfing it and he said he had a blast, though it was small, so rather than hunting around and risking the breeze come in, I got out there and got heaps of waves on my own. So much fun!

I did paddle out past the first headland and half way to the second, but the water was deep and murky and it was freaking me out to be out there on my own. I don't KNOW if there's sharks but my head was telling me to get out of there - lol. Besides, the tide was wrong and it was pretty sucky over the rocks. I'd seen the wave break on a forum and it looked AMAZING, but not today.

After that I went and got a coffee and walked around the golf course to where I knew there should be another break. Swansea Point was about two foot and although teh sets were few and far between, I thought I'd paddle out and get a couple of waves, which I did, and it was fun. I imagine with a bigger swell it would be awesome.

ages. It was pretty special just to watch really.Driving further down the coast, I rounded a bend and literally had to screech to a halt - omfg!!! Tagging @rossfletcher and @betterthanhome for this one - this place was CRANKING! It started beyond that headland where there were only eight guys out and these huge clean walls were coming through right down the shore. I stopped one for a chat as he was walking back out and he said that particular break only worked like that maybe twice a year. Perfect off shore and the most beautiful clean faces I'd seen in

I tell you what, I could definitely live in this shed, what do ya reckon? There was mullein growing wild all around it and cows grazing. Couldn't be more picturesque. I posted the break on Facebook and people keep messaging me asking where it is. I'm not telling - it's not really the done thing. Besides, people need to find their own adventure!

From here, I drove along the Wielangta track to the cutest little stone hut free camp - more on that another day.

The track I took down to the start of the Tasman peninsula had just been graded but there was a moment there where I thought - wtf am I doing! 4WD only? Am I going to have to turn back? But it was worth the risk driving through the forest for the most beautiful views.

I finally found a gorgeous spot in some guys paddock for $10 bucks a night with showers and toilet, and a great view of the sunset over the Tasman peninsula. Happy days. I had a couple of ciders and watched the sun going down chatting to my parents on facetime. Dad's about to go for more chemo which is delaying the CarT therapy but they need to shrink the tumours first for it to work. They're so darn positive though - they're just planning their next trip to Tassie as if this is all going to go away. Let's hope so. I feel so proud of them for their positive mindset, despite knowing it might NOT work at all.

The next day I was feeling pretty tired but drove over to South Arm and Clifton Beach to check the surf - it was about one foot and cross shore but I had a paddle and a swim and a walk or two before heading back to the same camp - it's safe, secure and pretty, and I decided to hang until Jamie flew in.

I'm definitely a few days behind posting these, so as you read I'm probably off on another adventure with my beloved.

With Love,

I guess this one is for HIVE peeps only. 😁😁😁

Haha yes, because there aren't too many people on HIVE πŸ˜†

I guess you had a great time out there. I haven't tried surfing, but I should since there are some nice surfing spots here in the Philippines. πŸ€™πŸ€™πŸ€™

Beautiful ❀️
I wish I could travel all the coasts of the world.
Thanks for sharing

Maybe one day you will!

"I could definitely live in this shed, what do ya reckon?" I say do the shed.

Check it out as I have included the photo now πŸ€ πŸ˜†

I finally got out a Tassie map to follow your adventure. (OMG, is that island just one big National Park, or what?) Freycinet, Swansea, Clifton Beach... so many bays and peninsulas to explore! Fantastic!
You didn't post the pic of the shed here! Or is this also part of the "find your own adventure" message? 😜
Wishing your dad strong health and success with his treatment, and you two some more amazing adventuring!

I have updated the post.. I don't know what happened, so PLEASE look at the rest of the photos!
I have a sticker on my van that says KEEP TASSIE WILD. It's like one big national park for sure, but always highly contested with logging, mining etc. Always fight to keep as is . It's the most incredible natural beauty!

Oh wow! With these pictures it looks even more amazing! Thanks for updating.

it looks so natural and beautiful

I've uploaded the rest of the photos now.. see what you think of that!

That wave looks awesome. My dream wave, right hand point and no crowd. Good that you did not tell people where it is, keep it a secret to these few locals.

Mate. PLEASE look at the photos I have now loaded as I didn't upload the best bit!!! What an idiot.

I bloody well enjoy my own company.

Looks like you will plan to stay here permanently if things goes like this. Good to know about Dad's positive mindset - I pray for him and hope he will join you soon.

I am so enjoying living vicariously through your posts about your travels. It almost feels like I was there!
