Wilson's Promotory, or the Prom as it's affectionately known, is a stunning national park treasure about two hours from Melbourne. I remember trips here with my parents as a kid - most people have fond memories of the place. Turquoise waters and gorgeous beaches, wombats stealing your food, wallabies and birds - it's a natural paradise.
The campground at Tidal River, right at the west end of the prom, has 500 spaces - unfortunately the Vic governments plan to make it free without a solid booking system to back it up means it can be hard to get a site even if half the place looks empty because people didn't pay so don't think to cancel if they can't make it. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by a wombat.
There's also lots of other wildlife to be seen like parrots and kookaburras and wallabies. The campground is also right on the edge of a river and beautiful beach.
After setting up camp and having a chill we went for a brief walk on the beach. Being nearly Easter down here in Victoria, the weather isn't brilliant but we prefer a winter camp.
A shame it was windy and we didn't bring the boards as there was an unexpected right hand break there which I didn't know about. I've never surfed the prom but it made me realize it is possible. Anyway I need to give my body a rest from surfing!
Tidal River is very beautiful - i would definitely go as far to say it's the best campground in Victoria, particularly for nature and wildlife.
There's a ton of walks in the area to stunning bays you can't drive to. Jamie used to take school camps here and has fond memories. You book the overnighters and carry in all your stuff, tents and food included. It's truly magical. Being 2 hours from Melbourne it's very popular with international tourists and Melbourne hikers alike.
It really is a national treasure. It strikes me we are very lucky they made it a national park back in 1905 and never developed it or used it for agriculture.
The only problem we had at Tidal River were some young crew playing loud music til 1 am. I know people like their fun but there were a lot of older people, hikers and families here and it was just another example of how inconsiderate people can be.
We did go for a lovely walk but I'll post that for Wednesday Walk if I have reception and inclination. Plus there's an incredible beach with squeaky sand that I have childhood memories of - we are off there this morning.

This sounds like an absolutely magical place! The mix of stunning beaches, wildlife, and nostalgic childhood memories makes it even more special. Despite the minor hiccup with noisy campers, it’s amazing that such a beautiful national treasure has remained untouched since 1905.
Wow! the place is so beautiful and it is good for camping, put a tent bring food and drinks and enjoy the night in this amazing place.
I hope you keep having fun. Get rested up so you can enjoy more great surfing!! I saw this by one of my neighbors, it made me think of you. He redid an Airstream camper. I'm curious if he's going to shine this up too.
