When people speak of Whitefield in Bangalore, the first few glimses anyone would think of are the sleek glass buildings, buzzing office spaces, and the insane traffic Bangalore is infamous for. But if you truly look beyond all this, there is a quieter, softer and much nicer side to it. This is a side away from the continuous IT hustle - one that feels like Old Bangalore.
Seegehalli Lake: A Pocket of Peace
Amidst the commotion and concrete in Whitefield lies the Seegehalli Lake. It is calm with green reflections of trees and flocks of birds. It is the perfect place for birdwatchers to spot birds. There was a slight drizzle when we reached there and it was quite the sight, although I could not capture just how beautiful this place was. Early morning joggers and quiet walkers must definitely visit this haven. It's relaxing and makes it super easy to forget Bangalore's busy suburbs. The lake is a reminder that even in a city that is known for its speed and hustle culture, moments of serenity and blissful solitude do exist - all you have to do is seek them.
Echoes of Colonial Churches
Just a short walk ahead from the lake, the colonial charm of Whitefield waits for you. Our Lady of Lourdes Church stands as a timeless witness to Bangalore's history. This church is more than just a place of worship. It was built in the 20th century and was formed to serve the spiritual needs of the European settlers and railway employees who lived in the area back then. The architecture shows off tall spires, pointy arches, and beautiful stained glass windows.
We also visited Ichthus Nazarene Church - ufortunately it was closed when we visited. "Ichthus" translates to 'fish' in Greek, which is an ancient symbol representing faith and fellowship.
These aren't just buildings, they stand as living pieces of Bangalore's old heritage.
Kadugodi Flower Market: A Symphony of Colour and Chaos
If you are a morning person, you cannot miss the Kadugodi Flower Market. You can see baskets piled with golden and orange marigolds, smell the fragrance of jasmine in the air, hear the vendors call the customers in, and so much more chaos. You will see vendors very meticulously stringing flowers into garlands. They move their skilled hands almost in a rhythmic manner, making garlands that will then adorn the temples, homes, and weddings across Bengaluru. Amid all this, it is the place where the city slows down a little, and you pause to marvel at the beauty of nature and human energy. This is just a small slice of old Bengaluru's vibrant mornings captured in a busy morning market.
By the time you leave the market, the scent of jasmine still lingers on your clothes, and the colourful flowers brighten the rest of your day. It's chaotic, beautiful, and as local as it gets - a slice of Bangalore only a few notice.
Iyengar Bakery: Sweet Nostalgia
No Bangalore story is complete without its bakeries - especially the Iyengar bakeries. When you get closer to one, the aroma of fresh baked food wraps you around. Flaky puffs, soft dilpasand, and butter biscuits that are rich and evoke memories of saving petty cash in childhood to go treat ourselves to these after school hours. This is one of those comforting little joys of life.
Channasandra Railway Station
Now, a railway station might not be a place a tourist would immediately think of to spend time at. But far from the suburban noise, here, trains slow down, and life pauses for a bit. We got here and spent some time just peoplewatching. The station has that small town charm with local vendors, clatter of trains, and chatter of people. Walking along the platform, you get a rare sense of stillness. Don't forget to get a platform ticket though, so they don't make you pay an extra fine, hehe.
Whitefield's Hidden Heart
Although Whitefield is quite often pigeonholed as a tech hub, IT abode or a traffic headache, if you truly look beyond all this, you will find a very different experience. So yes, Whitefield is not just tech parks, it still holds the charm of Old Bangalore. You just need to know where to look..
And if you'd like to see these places come alive, I have created a visual reel of the same - watch it here.
