En plena ciudad de Pampatar, en Isla de Margarita, Venezuela, justo frente a la Iglesia, la plaza y la Alcaldía, se encuentra un castillo enorme de esos que nos cuentan grandes historias, esos que de inmediato te trasladan en el tiempo y hasta el aire se siente diferente. Este castillo majestuoso que se levanta en medio de esta gran ciudad es el Castillo San Carlos de Borromeo.
Este impresionante castillo, digno representante de la arquitectura de la época colonial, se eleva ante el pueblo de Pampatar. Rodeado de enormes muros de piedra, una torre en cada una de sus esquinas, un puente levadizo hermoso, protegido por un foso inmenso que recorre todo el castillo, y una hilera de cañones, parece sacado de un cuento de corsarios y piratas. Y déjenme decirles que no está tan alejado de la realidad.
Este castillo se construyó en el año 1622, frente a la bahía de Pampatar, precisamente para proteger a la isla de los piratas que llegaban por ese extremo a tierras margariteñas a saquear y robar.
Su construcción de dos niveles permite desde la parte superior tener una vista casi completa de todos sus alrededores, pues no solo tiene vista hacia la bahía, sino que como pueden ver en las fotografías dependiendo de la zona del castillo donde te ubiques puedes ver absolutamente todo a tu alrededor, lo que le permitía cumplir a la perfección con su misión de proteger ese puerto tan importante de la isla.
Este castillo es, sin duda alguna, uno de los lugares turísticos por excelencia en Isla Margarita, es parada obligatoria si vienes de visita, y si eres de la isla, seguramente lo has visitado más veces de las que puedes recordar, o por lo menos ese es mi caso.
Es un lugar mágico, lleno de historias asombrosas, no solo de piratas y corsarios, sino que fue un sitio estratégico y de mucha importancia durante el proceso de independencia de nuestro país. De hecho, entre sus muros estuvo presa nuestra Heroína, Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi, por lo que caminar sobre sus pisos de piedra y entre esos muros enormes es dar un paseo por nuestra historia, es simplemente un privilegio.
Y por si fuera poco el sentirte rodeado de toda esa majestuosidad, este sentimiento solo crece y crece, porque cuando subes la rampa empinada que te lleva a la parte superior del castillo, la belleza de la bahía de Pampatar te deja sin habla. Ese mar inmenso, el sol radiante en medio de ese cielo azul, tan nuestro, tan hermoso, salpicado de nubes, es todo un regalo.
Es imposible no sentirse pequeño, ante tanta inmensidad, ante tanta belleza. Es por eso que cada vez que podemos vamos a visitarlo, y aunque en mis años de vida lo he visto tantas veces que ya perdí la cuenta, me sigo asombrando, me sigo emocionando y me enamoro un poco más.
Actualmente, el castillo está hermoso, bastante cuidado, cosa que me sorprendió muchísimo y me puso muy feliz, porque años atrás se veía un poco descuidado, pero en esta ocasión la experiencia fue totalmente diferente. Todos sus salones estaban habilitados, e incluso tenían las exposiciones activas, y lo mejor de todo fue poder ver la cantidad de turistas extranjeros que entraron y salieron del castillo durante el tiempo que tomó nuestra visita.
Generalmente, voy con mis hijos y en esta oportunidad no fue la excepción, disfrutaron recorriendo el castillo, imaginando como sería en la época de los piratas y hasta posaron con algunas armas.
Y les cuento, que leyendo un poco sobre la historia del castillo, descubrí que fue destruido casi por completo en varias oportunidades, algunas veces producto de ataques piratas y otras como parte de la lucha independentista, pero como ven se negó morir y sigue día a día contando su historia.
Sin duda alguna este es un lugar que no puedes dejar de conocer si vienes a Isla Margarita, y si vives aquí, pues también. Es parte de nuestra historia, parte de nuestras raíces y de quienes somos, además te aseguro que te vas a llevar una experiencia increíble.
Justo ahora tienen espacios para sesiones fotográficas bastante divertidas, además de recreaciones dramáticas de la época como duelos y enfrentamientos para entretener a los visitantes, así que sí o sí, tienes que conocerlo.

It is impossible not to feel small, before such immensity, before such beauty. That is why every time we can we go to visit it, and although in my years of life I have seen it so many times that I have lost count, I am still amazed, I am still excited and I fall in love a little more.
Currently, the castle is beautiful, quite well kept, which surprised me a lot and made me very happy, because years ago it looked a little neglected, but this time the experience was totally different. All its halls were ready, and even had active exhibitions, and the best of all was to see the number of foreign tourists who entered and left the castle during the time it took us to visit it.
Usually, I go with my children and this time was no exception, they enjoyed touring the castle, imagining how it would be in the time of the pirates and even posed with some weapons.
And I tell you, reading a little about the history of the castle, I discovered that it was almost completely destroyed on several occasions, sometimes as a result of pirate attacks and other times as part of the independence struggle, but as you can see it refused to die and continues to tell its story day by day.
Undoubtedly this is a place you can not miss if you come to Isla Margarita, and if you live here, well, also. It is part of our history, part of our roots and who we are, and I assure you that you will have an incredible experience.
